Sambucol Immuno Forte - 250ml Liquid $19.99, 24 Capsules $12.99 @ Pharmacy 4 Less

Most pharmacies don’t discount Sambucol at the height of cold & flu season so this was a nice find. Apart from the usual precautions I find that taking this daily really helps to protect against winter viruses.

Link to capsules is at the top of the page, link to 250ml liquid here.

Pharmacy 4 Less have other vitamins and supplements on sale with a few good deals. Online ordering attracts a flat shipping fee of $9.95, free shipping over a (laughable) minimum of $149.

Came here for the Sambuca. I am disappoint.

Wait so 'cold and flu' tablets now contain zinc, vitamin C and fruit juice instead of actual medicines?

No wonder the home doctor was so quick to prescribe me panadeine forte yesterday.

All "cold and flu" pills have been junk since they removed pseudoephedrine. The phenylephrine they replaced it with is also garbage.

There is no over the counter "cold and flu" pill that does anything for colds besides antihistamines (loratadine & co.). Everything else is worthless.

Yep, but kinda-sorta-thankfully, the forced removal of codeine has meant you can get pseudoephedrine on its own fairly easily.. Just ask for it at the chemist.

        • +1

Pseudo was restricted for completely different reasons than codeine though, one shouldn't affect the other since pseudo is just as much a meth precursor as it ever was.

        • +1

@Hardicus: Understand, but the government have said "codeine terrible" and now chemist's care more about it.

I'm just happy I can get decent cold meds still!

          @ryang:

Codeine was abused too often so unfortunately resulted in scheduling it a high drug schedule which is unfortunate for those who use it appropriately. It's a legalisative issue more than chemists being more careful. It is illegal to sell any Schedule 4 medication without a prescription which Codeine now is.

    • It's not just "fruit juice", there is a wealth of research out there supporting Sambucus Nigra's ability to shorten both the duration and severity of flus and colds.

IMO this is far superior to any over the counter cold and flu tablets as this actually treats the conditions rather than just alleviating symptoms.

I recommend buying concentrated extracts from places like iHerb though; much better value.

Easy to swallow capsules containing Black Elderberry extract combined with immunity ingredients Vitamin C and Zinc.

    Junk

    But how would you know?

    • Google :-)

This makes expensive urine, nothing else

Not a deal because the product doesn’t do anything.

Surely these studies contradict your statement?

I love the sample size of the study "12 donors(young, healthy students with no inflammatory conditions and currently receiving no medication) ".

I recall a documentary on this mob and I think they featured on that show called the checkout on ABC some time back. Here's a quick link I found. http://kfolta.blogspot.com/2010/02/sambucol-another-med-that…
This product is rubbish. It's fraud.

For the last few weeks, I've been umming and ahhing about buying sambucol after suffering from the flu and seeing the commercial, now I'm glad I held back, pharmaceutical commercials are full of exaggerations and even lies.

  • homeopathy is a much better placebo than this

  • While I don't agree that they should have ever labelled their product as 'clinically proven' (and that eventually got removed), there are studies which are worth further consideration for future research.

The only thing is because no one can see potential patent opportunities from elderberries, any potential large-scale study is unlikely to get sufficient funding, and that's probably the biggest problem.

So enjoy your Tamiflu, until you can't afford it, I guess.
