Amazon Delivery Times in Australia

So, general debate (pls vote) on how you think Amazon is performing on delivery.

In the UK its amazing, my parents live in a village which is 15kms from the nearest town however Amazon still operates a 'same day service' for most products. You place the order at 4pm and by 8pm its in your hand… amazing.

Here they dont seem to be quite as on the ball. Today they have just emailed me to tell me an order I placed on the 9th of June (locally, not from overseas) is about to be delivered. Most orders seem to take several days to even get processed.

Is it just me ?

Pretty much everything takes 4-5 business days. Ironically the fastest has been a desk purchased from their US store.

  • I bought something of amazon au and took about 3 weeks to get here, obviously had to come from OS I guess, but with Aust Post these days you can never be too sure.

  • They seem to take their time with packing and posting the order. I'm 20km from the warehouse and it takes over a week to receive any of the orders.

    • Warehouse robots here are just lazier. They stand around watching one robot do all the robot work, whilst giving their robot opinion on how they can do a better robot job. (much like workmen at the roadworks in AU)

  • Too many variables. It depends on whether the item is fulfilled by Amazon or not. When it's through Amazon Marketplace and the seller is responsible for fulfillment, then yes it can take a longer. Generally I've found anything fulfilled by Amazon to be really quick, especially Prime eligible items (as a Prime member).

Amazon AU has been far too much AU, not enough Amazon.

Oh, and auspost are apparently only just coping with the current level of Amazon orders, which don't auger well if Amazon ever actually do start providing a decent price/service level.

    • Amazon will eventually setup their own delivery network and internal courier service (called Amazon Flex in other countries). It's not a big issue for them once the demand is there. As others mentioned Prime in UK is fantastic a cornerstone of shopping. Order anything for free next day delivery with most cities having same day 2 hour delivery. That might not be feasible here due to sheer size of the land mass but as they build more and more warehouses could become reality. Also, drone deliveries.

Amazon AU is pretty disappointing overall. I've enjoyed a few of the outstanding deals like the toaster, kettle etc but it's rubbish how many items are 1-3 weeks delivery and their selection of fashion items is terrible + overpriced. The few items I had delivered by Fastway were pretty good, overnight from Melb to Syd, but AU post holds things up a bit. I think with prime it should be dispatched within say 3 hours and delivered the next day (if not the same day if available in local warehouse). They need to get a handle on the dispatch times.

Amazon is still currently kicking off and is limited by timings of delivery companies.
It's not like they can put on a switch over night to say hey Auspost, Toll, StarTrack Fastway deliver this faster than what you can deliver now..
Wait until they have their own transportation infrastructure - if they go that way.

I joined Amazon Prime and so far, those sales with Prime tag are delivered within 2 days (as per their timeframe). I think they might be pushing non-Prime member to longer delivery time just to get you on their Prime membership.

    • I don't think it would be to push people, more likely if you have two packages to get ready, one for a Prime customer and one for a none Prime which are you going to give preference to?

  • I live 2 hours from Melbourne. I've had stuff come the next day via Prime, but in the majority it always seems a jib. Like they advertised and shout from the hills "2 days delivery" but then the items I order on last Friday shows a delivery of Wednesday. Amazon and other people even say like "oh that after processing blah blah" but no, no matter what they say "get it in 2 days" and when you order it becomes 4 days.

  • It all depends on many factors:
    - your location
    - your shipping routes
    - warehouse location

They have a warehouse in Dandenong South, I live in Dandenong North, these are my experiences:
    - items in stock in the warehouse using Prime: Next day delivery
    - items not in stock in the warehouse can take up to 21 days with the longest 14 days.

Your title says 'in Australia', try delivering to the middle of the desert… expect delays.

    • Sure.

We live in Sydney to be exact. Stock issues apparently in this case, but generally they seem slow. We are not prime customers however…

  • I recently order something on 12 Aug - Saturday, item shipped out on Monday and I get it on Wed with Auspost. Pretty good I must say, considering NSW to VIC is 3-4 business days? One thing I note though, Amazon selected express checkout as default as oppose to their free standard shipping (it was $50+ order), I selected the normal free one. Don't have Prime sub.

  • I always get my packages within 2-3 days. Unless they run out of stock and need to reorder. (This is with a prime membership.)

  • slightly off topic, has any one actually returned anything to Amazon?
I did last week. "Free returns" isn't really, as you have to post it & pay for postage + tracking. But here's the interesting thing. They told me you can spend up to $17 in postage (if it costs more, you need to get permission), so I spend $13.50 returning an $8 item. I chased them up on how to submit the AusPost receipt to get reimbursed, but they said "Oh you don't need to, we'll just refund you $17" That seems a bit odd (I might have to return more things).

The frustrating bit is they received my returned item on Monday, but it's Thursday and it's still showing "Return started your refund will be processed when we receive your item."

    • I mean Wednessday

      • Yeah I refunded a dead hard drive a while back, I only paid $8.50 in delivery and got $17 back.

That sounds a bit off that they haven't processed it yet, my guess is that they've got a pile of returns they go through each day, mine didn't take long to get refunded so it should be sweet.

        • well I'll bite my tongue. I emailed them and they said they'll pay it. and they did, twice. I wonder how long before they reverse that.

    • If you're upfront with Amazon on the return cost, you may not even have to return anything at all, considering the item cost is less than the postage return. Anyway, give them time, but don't forget, just chase them again another week.

  • I'm in the west coast and bought something with prime and it took exactly 2 days. My last purchase without prime (but said free shipping for Prime members) however, took a month. D:

  • I have been using prime. And all my deliveries so far with Prime have come within 2 days and I do not live in any of the capital cities.

I am quite happy with their service.

  • Ordered on the 9th of September, and it said that delivery would be between the 20th of September and the 9th of October, but I notice on the order details that it said that the goods would be processed on the 1st of October. I wonder, because they haven't taken the money out of my account yet, if they are doing this for financial reasons and are just planning to include it in the October month sales. Everything I ordered was Australian made products, so not sure what else could be the delay.

  • It's okay for me, I live in ADL and generally speaking they arrive at 8.30am the next morning they ship out (whole process less than 2 days)
