Braces at Orthodontist or General dentist?

Hi everyone. I live in South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. I have a 12 yr old daughter and she needs to straighten her teeth as she have a deep overbite. My dentist said they do offer orthodontic service at their clinic and it would cost about $5000-$6000 for the braces. I've also made an consultation with an Orthodontist and the quote is $7500.

My question is, is the service provide at a dentist just as good as an orthodontist? I'm concerned of the outcome as the dentist is not specialise in orthodontic but it's 20% to 30% cheaper.

Any advise or recommendations?

How much is just the consultation with the orthodontist? Go to that consult, listen to what they have to say. Generally dentists are okay at general orthodontics work, but more complex or involved cases should rightly go to a specialist. And unfortunately we have no idea what your daughter's teeth are like, nor probably should you share that with strangers online.

    • The first consultation is free. I think in my daughter's case it's nothing too complicated. No crooked teeth, just overbite. Will need to extract 2 teeth on the upper jaw.

    "What is an orthodontist?
Think of it like the difference between your family GP and a specialist physician such as a cardiologist or a paediatrician. Your family’s general dentist will be able to help you to improve your overall oral health, but a specialist orthodontist is the only properly qualified person to diagnose, prevent and treat dental or facial irregularities, and correctly align your teeth, bite and jaws.

As well as completing a five-year degree in dentistry, an orthodontist also undergoes a further 5,000 hours of specialist training in the field of orthodontics. Whether you or your child are being treated with braces or clear aligners such as Invisalign®, you need to be sure you’re being treated by an orthodontist to get the best results."

    • Thank you for your recommendation but CBD is too far for me.

  • I don't suggest you go to Generally dentists.

  • Do you have extras cover on your private health insurance? If so you may get more back from the orthodontist than the dentist. I know we did. Sure the orthodontist cost a little more, but we got back more rebate and the difference then was negligible. I'm glad we went to the orthodontist though as the local dentist had an entirely different treatment plan to the orthodontist and the orthodontist's treatment worked which led me to wonder- would the other treatment have been a waste of time and money? I guess it's like getting a general doctor to do your brain surgery. It may work, but it may go wrong.

  • Go to someone you can trust. If it is a trustworthy person (hard to find), they wouldn't take the case unless they are very confident and would refer you otherwise.

A specialist has completed more training, most of it theory and research. A three year residency program isn't going to make someone with terrible sense of physics and lack of dexterity into some kind of wizard.

Specialist would definitely be the way to go if it is an esoteric case. General practitioners wouldn't invest the time to learn what would likely be applied to a one off scenario. The specialist would have looked for these extreme cases for their case reports.

  • In the big picture of things the extra for the specialist orthodontist is worth the cost

As an Orthodontist I recommend you use the Orthodontist.

    • I forgot to ask the orthodontist if the quote includes teeth extraction. I once read in a forum they say orthodontist don't extract teeth. If it doesn't included then would the child dental scheme cover the cost of extraction?

  • As a mother of 2 teenagers who have completed their orthodontic works, I strongly recommend you/your daughter to go to an orthodontist. If I were you, I would shop around for a cheaper orthodontist. (And for a 12 y.o., I wouldn't go for Invisalign no matter how cheap it is.) Also, check the fine prints, e.g. any fees for 'emergency' services if the braces break? How about post-braces check-ups?

    • How much does it cost you? Any recommendations for an orthodontist?

      • Hmm, that was a while ago, can't remember the exact cost, I think around $5000 each, definitely less than $7000. Paid by monthly installments. We got some back from private health insurance. One of my daughters also needed 2 teeth extractions, done at our normal dentist, partly covered by private health insurance.
We go to Bayside Orthodontist in Albert Park. My girls (14 y.o. & 17 y.o.) finished with their braces 2-3 years ago, but still have check-ups every 6 months or so, to check on their retainers and wisdom teeth movement (X-ray). All 'free' (part of the $5000 'package').

        • Thanks for your info. Appreciated.

See the orthodontist first, ask him about extractions. What I do know is that they do NOT extract teeth anymore in this day and age, as it changes the shape of the face if person is under the age of around 25, and your daughter is young.

Every time she has to have an adjustment, which is often for about 2 years etc, there is a substantial cost, in Qld my grand daughter has just finished with the orthodontist, they had to pay $ 350.00 each time.

If this was me, I would go to the orthodontist, as that is what they specialize in, and this is something that you do not want to get wrong, it will be with her for the rest of her life.
