Is ASUS RT-AC68U Good Enough for 250mbps NBN Speed?

So I'm considering buying a new router for my home which is FTTP enabled.

I want to buy the RT-AC68U. Mainly because everyone raves about it here but it's also got the features I need - such as VPN and USB C in order for me to plug in a NAS.

MY question is, I notice a lot of the NBN providers are bringing out 250/100 speed connections.

Wanting to future proof it, would the RT-AC68U be able to go that speed?

I know the RT-AC68U is rated at 1900mbps. So basically does that it should be like many times above the Internet speed and should be able to handle it no problems?

  • So jealous some people will get nbn in 2030…. Or never…

Firstly, by the time you will be able to get 250/100 your router will likely be due for replacement anyway so I wouldn't worry about 'future proofing' it.

The 1900mbps refers to the theoretical WiFi speed on the LAN side, not the WAN side

When/if you do get 250/100 your ISP will provide you with a compatible router anyway which you can use in front of this device so no need to worry :)

    TL;DR …. Buy it

Theoretically it can do up to 1Gbps and you shouldn't have any problem getting up to around 700 Mbps (if that is ever available).

Here's the first result when I Google it:-

  • You could always buy the big brother. That's the RT-AC86U (read the numbers carefully). It has an (almost) identical set of features and user interface but the processor is about twice as fast and more memory. Both the RT-AC68U and RT-AC86U are able to connect to NBN fibre at 1 Gbps but I don't know what speed they can move data.

    • Yeah the big brother model seems excessively expensive for a home set up.

Did you look at Amazon with a trial Prime for free delivery.
Without going to dodgy dealers the RT-AC68U can be about AU$230 + delivery. Unless the AU$ has gone to hell with all the politicking then it's not much more to the RT-AC86U + a power socket adapter. The power pack has US pins but universal voltage.

End up buying it from wireless1 for 168. Not too bad. I also confirmed with them it was Australian stock

@witsa: Yeah, when I bought, I found places cheaper than Amazon but I had concerns about warranty or lack of it. You got a good price. Way below the 68Us even.

        • @BobD:

To be clear I got the 68u for that price, not the 86u.

From what I saw that price seemed normal as long as you waited for the right deal. Also there were a lot of people selling the American variant so you just had to be careful of that.

  • I used this modem with my gigabit connection in France - perfect.
Aussie BB is expensive hu for nbn 250…
Paid 40 dollars for a gigabit connection fttp at home - here it's damn expensive.

    Wanting to future proof it

It doesn’t matter which router you use. The best wlan speed you’ll get is dependent on the nodes wifi standard.
