Is There a Way to Have Portable AC Power Without a Generator?

I’m looking for a portable source of power for a 55W 240 led ringlight. The ChargeTech ones from the US look like what I need is there an AU version? I’ve tried researching what will work but I’m a little out of my depth.

Appreciate any help. Sorry if this is a super basic question.

You need an inverter. A 100W inverter would do it and they are fairly cheap. It will run off a 12V battery. It will be significantly less efficient than buying a 12V led and running it straight off the battery.

If it has a plugpack you would be better off ditching the plugpack. Check the plugpack's output voltage and find a power source to match. The manufacturer may also have a 12V option.

If the output is in fact 12v, then skip the middleman completely and wire it directly to the battery. A car battery, or any smaller one like a UPS 7Ah battery would also work without any issues whatsoever.

If it isn't 12v, but in fact 15v output from the power supply like many that I found, then you can still attempt to wire it to the battery directly (quite a lot of DC items have fairly forgiving voltage ranges). You may find it works - great! - but if it doesn't it may flicker or strobe at full brightness depending on the way it's built. Then you'd fall back to an AC inverter, or otherwise a DC-DC converter that you'd use for a laptop car power supply.

  • Thanks for your help! It’s a 15v. I’ll look at those options :)

    • Stepping 12V up to 15V is pretty easy. There are circuits on eBay that are below $10. Jaycar likely have options for around $40

      • It won't let me post links. Search eBay for "DC DC 150W"

  • A battery, couple it with a solar panel on your vehicles roof and boom, free recharges. A deep cycle golf cart battery is your cheapest way to get a compatible battery that you can constantly recharge with your panel.
