Lost Contribution to Australian Super Fund

Hi,
My employer made a contribution for the first time to my Super fund (AustralianSuper)

It has been more than 3 weeks and I'm still waiting for an answer from AustralianSuper. They said they will investigate it and will get back to me, but they didn't.

What are the options for me? Can I raise a claim somewhere? I'm clueless please assist

Thx

Are you sure your employer has submitted it to your super? Usually they only do 4 times a year.

    • I dont know the 'usual' part, but for my last 4 jobs in 8 years I am pretty sure they were submitted every month to my super. Even my current employer pays fortnightly and when I log in i can see the super portion gets in even before i get paid in my bank account.

how do you know your employer made the contribution?
While it shows on your payslip weekly/fortnightly/monthly, often the contributions are pooled and deposited less frequently throughout the year.

  • It sometimes takes awhile for the payment to come through. All depends on when your employer finally submitted - check with your payroll.

  • Once they've received a contribution you'll get a welcome pack in the mail with your member number etc. That could be in several month's time after the first contribution; super funds are not known for their expediency.

Super is accrued weekly on your payslip, then tranferred to the fund each quarter (May, Aug, Nov, Feb) at which point AustralianSuper will only just recognise your existence.

In the meantime, without a member number they'll have no idea who you are or how to find your funds or if they've even been received. You've gotta wait for them, sadly.

super is transferred when ever the employer feels like it, could be the same day as the pay or the last day they are allowed to (or never if they are a$$holes)

To the poster the cut off dates are here, if you haven't got it by then, hassle your employer then if they don't follow it up ring the ATO and say your employer failed to pay it, till then chill out.

      • Don't hope the ATO will do much I have had a claim in for 5 years now they have found in my favour
The company is still operating and all they tell me is don't worry we are still chasing them.but in the mean time the company owners splash the cash on overseas trips

company should get fined in reality

  • Eh, good luck with that! I had a contribution from my employer go missing with Australian Super in December 2015, still waiting. Australian Super told me my employer had to do the requesting as I couldn't, my employer gave them evidence of payment (a bulk payment for many employees) and followed up numerous times (they copied me in the correspondence), still nothing. I gave up in the end.

Not sure if its helpful but a lot of places give the super to treasury/revenue state agencies if they don't know what to do with it (and after a certain amount of years). If your from NSW for example you can search for RevenueNSW Unclaimed money site, or a specific one for the state.

      • Thanks so much for your suggestion, I tried this already with no luck. My thoughts are that the money has been allocated to someone else's account by mistake.

in all reality , why not just do you own super contributions now.

why down vote it, it means you dont have to involve your employer, not exactly hard to bpay to your super fund, then ring them up and tell them to tax it.

it means it goes into your super fund after 1 day, not ~2-3 months late.

it means you dont have to mess around with pay roll every time you wish to change

it means you do not have to chase up your employer

but continue you do it the old way

      • perhaps you don't understand what employer contributions are.

employers have to make the contribution by law (super guarantee) and the employer is the one that gets a tax deduction.

you can make contributions personally as well but they won't count to the minimum that the employer has to make on your salary.

i don't understand why people comment on subjects they don't really know much about

        • Yeh I understand the difference, im a big boy and can read.

I assumed that he was doing a vol contribution for the first time, cos he said “first” time

If it’s the sg he /she is referring to that would mean it’s his first week of work? What’s the whole commotion about then. The employer can delay payment to the last day. That is what I did when I had a small business.

I do bpay amounts of 8k a year to bring me up to the 25k as my employer does 17k so I am well versed on the whole concept of super annuation.

And a few of your comments prior to legislation change on July 1st this year are incorrect. For example prior to that date the 9.5 percent sg can be reduced by a personal Contribution.
