What to Do with Screen Insurance?

Hi guys,

Im wondering what are the most popular options amongst Ozb users for mobile phone screen insurance?
I dont know if it is me or the phones, but for the first 15 years I never broke any screens and during last 3 years I have always had to upgrade my phones because of broken screen (too expensive to replace; harder and harder to diy).
She has paid her Pixel 2XL for 3-4 months, I am on the lookout for a new phone.
I am currently holding Amex Plat Edge (no screen ins) and my partner has Explorer, but I would like to cancel hers for 18 months to get points. Which leads me to my question, what to do next to be covered?

  1. Sign up with Amex Essential and try to transfer current Explorer's insurance to Essential card (dont know if possible, just a thought)
  2. Sign up with any other card (with screen insurance) or standalone screen insurance. Dont know what are good options here.

Thanks guys!

    Waste of $

      Why?
Screen replacements have become very expensive. And if im prone to break them, then I would rather be insured than not.
But I guess every insurance product can be a waste of money for someone.

$5 for tempered glass screen protector. $15 for decent/branded phone case.

If you decide on the Amex Essential approach, the worst-case scenario is: the cover will start after 30 days of first payment of your monthly contract on this card. But since both cards are offered by them, you could check if they will cover you for the 30-days gap, after you switch cards. If that is important enough to you.

    From here.

    ACTIVATION OF SMARTPHONE SCREEN INSURANCE:
Cover is effective for each Smartphone when You pay the total cost of a:
    • Smartphone outright in a single transaction, or
    • Smartphone on a monthly contract, or
    • a minimum 12 month “SIM Only” contract
    a) Your American Express Essential Credit Card; or
    b) Your American Express Membership Rewards points.
Important: Where the Smartphone monthly contract or SIM Only plan commences with an alternative
payment method before You switch to making your monthly payment with Your American Express
Essential® Credit Card, cover will commence thirty (30) days after the date of the first monthly
payment on Your American Express Essential® Credit Card.

Make sure you also get headphone jack insurance, micro usb slot insurance, and third party insurance in case your phone rear ends another phone.

  • Get a credit card with no-fee / low rate and use that. Something like an Amex Essential. I don't have screen insurance but I bought a Spigen Neo Hybrid Carbon case and a cheapy screen protector. Dropped it many times on concrete and after a year or so, the screen protector broke so I replaced it. This is tempered glass protectors. Plastic ones suck.

    get a more affordable phone.

I hope you've read the PDS cover to cover

  • If you are prone to breaking phones, buy one that won't break. I have a Moto XForce, have given it to people to throw at a brick wall more than once!

Worst damage that has happened is that someone couldn't throw & it hit me in the forehead. The phone is still great, but I have a giant lump on my forehead…

I pay around $50 per year extra to cover my iPhone on my home and contents insurance, covers not only the screen but if its lost/stolen or broken as well (and includes when travelling overseas). If you can get an amex signup bonus in 18 months worth more than you pay for insurance then you'll be ahead.
