For those keen, I have been tracking / listing deals on the Shield over the past month or so in this Whirlpool thread:

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2628493&…

Interesting to see EB Games and Kogan / Dick Smith are now stocking them too:

    https://ebgames.com.au/pc-244112-NVIDIA-Shield-TV-Bundle-PC-…

    https://www.kogan.com/au/shop/televisions/pvr/?q=nvidia%20sh…

    https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/shop/televisions/pvr/?q=nvid…

Will only be a matter of time when we'll see them in JB / Good Guys / Harvey Norman etc IMO.

    • Yeah these launched in Australia on the 19th of July. Wholesale prices are decent too.

    • So how about the price?

      • Pos vote = good deal ;)

It's only been slightly cheaper once before from an Oz seller AFAIK:

        https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2628493&…

        • Do you have any idea when JB hifi will start selling this? I still have lots of JB hifi giftcard which was purchased last year on ebay with 15% off…

        • @symeteor:

I've emailed them a couple of times recently, and they have hinted at stocking the Shield in the near future, but nothing official - I wouldn't be surprised to see it in stores before xmas, especially now that EB Games and Kogan have just started selling it.

        • @kirt: any newes on the pro?

        • +2
        • @supabrudda: from memory, the only difference I thought was the pro had the 500gb internal drive. Can just connect an external HDD or nas. Sorry, You might know that already.

        • @ruddiger7: cheers,
I think the remote was better (with an olde schoole headphone jack!) And MicroSD slot too.

But yeah you're right, the normal one + external usb drive is a cheaper option.

I was thinking of using it mostly as a plex box.

  • I been using Apple TV older model now and been using Netflix for years USA I use getflix but these days we watch a bit of anything and it cuts off.
Never used to have this issue have moved house since so not sure if poor connection or Apple TV or getflix issue?
Can you get Netflix in this and enter in a DNS to get Netflix USA? Or is that same?

    • Can you get Netflix in this and enter in a DNS to get Netflix USA?

      Yep.

    • I use Windscribe VPN and can connect to Netflix USA using Mibox 3 with the same OS as this, so i reckon it should work.

  • I still feel a PC running some sort of android TV emulator would work better but if you wanna play with nvidia stuff I am all for it.

But I reckon android emulator on one of those dell optiplex's or sff's pre builts with a GTX 1050 will do this fine.

Just haggle them down and you can get a semi decent machine.

But this definitely for fun nvidia software.

The Shield Tablet Original and K1 is still one of the coolest tablets with in built gaming software around and this console variant is definitely super useful and fun to play around with.

Also this has been much cheaper in the past before up to $50 for similar same setup and almost $100 off for just the remote and console and no controller.

Still a good price but just letting others know in case they want to wait for the price to drop again and save possibly $50-70 off for same setup.

As always it is up to you, to each their own, your mileage may vary, just my two cents.. peace and love lol all :)

    • Last time I tried a PC to passthrough 4k HDR video without issues over Plex with dolby atmos I was very disappointed.

    • Whilst i could be wrong, i'm not aware of an android emulator that has decent direct access to hardware acceleration.
This would make using an emulator a bad choice in my opinion.

For $300 the shield is a pure android device, and has support for 4K 60fps 10bit H.265 coming (if it hasn't arrived already).

Upvote for you anyway, because you're entitled to say a few words and no one should down vote without an explanation.

  • Why would you use one of these over say - a ps4? or even xbox One S, often going for around the same price?

    • indeed..

      • These are so tiny that you could Velcro one to the back of a wall-mounted TV. Probably one of the few upsides I guess.

        And power consumption is negligible.

  • isnt a revision to this model long overdue? will we see shield 2 soon?

  • is it 2018 version ? In the description it is android 7.0 nougat (for 2017 version)…not 8.0 Oreo

    • +1

2017 and 2018 are the same.. You need to update firmware to 8.0

  • oh i wish we can still get it from Amazon US. it's sitting around AUD 250 delivered compare to around AUD 300 for Australia version :(

  • I have a synology NAS with plex running on it and a PC dedicated Steam gaming with a Samsung TV that runs the Steam app. Honest question, do I need one of these, will it improve my setup?

    • No unless you want to experiment around with the Android system as an enthusiast, gamer or developer or am a huge nvidia android fan. Your pc can do everything this can do and more it is meant for those who do not have a pc or console and don't want to buy one. Very niche. Usually steam link and pc is a better choice but pc can be more expensive but of course more versatile and flexible. It is a fun toy and detour or something simple for non gamers and non pc users maybe for older media consumers with 4k TV's or family home setups that don't want a huge pc in the living room or another game console. It is just the best android box that's all cool to have to have access to another economy system but if money is an issue pc or cheaper box all the way.

  • I bought one recently, and it is a great little device. I have sideloaded Blue Iris, Tasker and AutoVoice, and set up some automations via Home Assistant and Google Assistant. The WAF is still pretty high after 3 weeks or so.

The only issue is local TV apps. It has 7Plus and TenPlay available. ABC iView works fine, but the 9now splash screen is in portrait mode, and unusable with the remote. You can navigate with the controller, and shows do open up in full screen. I was thinking about getting a HDHomeRun to bypass these apps, as they aren't great.

All in all, I am happy with it. Being able to sideload apps and perform automations is nice. Hopefully this helps someone :)
