Do You Use Business Sneakers

Hey all,

I am an IT consultant and find I prefer to wear good looking leather sneakers to work. I bought some Wild Rhino Crest shoes and really liked them but found they wore out too quickly.

Do you have any good recommendations for nice looking business sneakers I can wear to work?

Thanks

Simon

  • Common Projects.. pricey though

Common project clones, but you don't get the silly barcode. Once tax removed works out to be about 150usd.

      • Interesting. Do you have a pair? How do they compare with Common Projects?

Haven't owned a pair of cp's, but from what I've heard they're practically identical in quality with some imperceptible design changes. I like my svenssons, but don't really wear them all that much.

  • check out locoste range as well

  • How quick did they wear out for you? ie 5 days a week wear and dead in X months?

I had a similar experience in that they wore out in a few months just 2 days a week over weekends…

Not being critical, but I have always wondered why those in the IT industry regularly choose a different dress code to others that work in office roles. I work for a large global IT / Consulting / BPO / etc corporate, and our dress codes is conservative (and mandated).

Kudos for being individual etc., just wondered if it is purely a comfort thing?

      a comfort thing

      Yes.

From when I was more junior in IT if you were on the floor you were often on hands and knees fixing cables, or wheeling trolleys, shifting boxes, doing stuff in a data centre so you needed comfortable clothes and a tie just gets in the way.

      • That makes sense

Yes comfort but I am also wearing a business shirt, blazer and chinos. Nice sneakers help strike good balance with comfort but also not being viewed too much as a suit in a world of hoodies and jeans.

Not comfort as an end, but as a means. The theory is that being more comfortable results in higher productivity. Clearly, this is not true in all cases, but it was enough of a reason to change the dress code of a company I worked for in the past. So I am sticking to the story :-)

  • Seconding lacoste. Good range that will work with Chinos.

Do you own desert boots? Perfect business casual shoes IMO, and usually prety comfy.

  • Prada Sport, they're what I wear, love them, and honestly nobody notices the difference because who goes around looking at everyone's shoes? lol

  • Some variation of Nike Air, all-black leather version. Comfy, and still good-looking.

Ecco shoes, also a bit pricey but have heard good things!

    • +1 ecco. Most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. Find an outlet store to pick up last seasons stock at better prices. I usually pay ~$100 a pair for them, but they last years of daily wear.

  • Black Volleys

  • Florsheim comfortech are very comfortable and long lasting business shoes. Florsheim sneakers are also a good option and if you're in Sydney the outlet shop is worth a visit.. last time there I got 2 pairs of suede boots for under $120 total

  • Merrell comes to mind.
Not sure about quality these days.

    • Yep was going to post the same. Merrell are comfy as hell and long lasting. If you know your size you can get them from the US where they're pretty much half price.

  • Allbirds - the sneaker of silicon valley.
    Wool is good.

    • do you know if they ever go on sale?

  • Sportdirect have Rockports on sale at the moment

Have you heard of shoe rotation?

    • Yep - better to buy 3-5 pairs up front to last 3-5 years than one pair every year. Different styles & colours so you've got more flexibilty to match attire. Also keeps odour away, gives options if one pair gets drenched and shows you own more than one pair of shoes.

  • Business sneakers is an oxymoron.

Get a pair of brown boots and a pair of black boots, matching belts, insoles recommended by a good shoe shop, rotate them and use shoe trees, get them resoled when you need to, and you'll never buy another pair of shoes.

Match with a pair of tan chinos (black boots and belt) and a pair of blue chinos (blue boots and belt) and 5 shirts and you won't ever have to think about clothes and shoes for the work week again.
