    place a sign, "please steal"
    no one will steal it

watch till the end, place a lock on it and someone will want to steal it
leave it unlocked and people will wonder why its not locked and wont wanna steal it

    • Well if you ask for them to take it, it's not stealing is it?

    take a wheel with me

Tell the bike not to keep valuables. If they've got nothing on them they won't be robbed.

    • Ah, the Daniel Andrews approach.

Bike doesn't get stolen if you don't ride a bike šŸ˜‰

It's safer not to have a bike.

ride a cheap bike. I have a polygon which is actually a great bike and no one cares. If it was a Cannondale there would be only a chain left

I lock my bicycle in the garage using a kryptonite floor anchor and a kryptonite fahgetaboutit chain and d lock. This is designed for cars and motorbikes, but I have been unfortunate enough to he robbed before so it is worth the investment in my eyes. Outside I dont leave it out of site.

I have the same setup and brand of each (both chain & D-lock) to protect my e-bike. I also use an ABUS U-Lock Granit X Plus 540 -https://www.abus.com/eng/Mobile-Security/Bike-Safety-and-Security/Locks/U-locks/GRANIT-XPlus-540

I also make sure I park my bike between other bikes in the rack when riding to work to make it impossible to get in there with bolt cutters. They'll need a cordless angle grinder to get it out of there, but they'll create plenty of noise in the process and are likely to be caught in the act as people come & go in the basement carpark regularly.

I have a kmart bike and a kmart lock. Hasn't been stolen yet and probably won't be because it's a garbage bike but it's fine for me.

My father has a quite fancy bike and locks it (with a chain lock also) inside a cage which he and a few mates have the key for at work, or in the garage at home.

When he had a medium fancy bike he used to lock it to an old iron piano frame outside. That thing weighed so much, you'd have to disassemble the bike to take it.

    Keep it in the garage.
    Problem solved!

  • My electric bike was just stolen 1 week ago, it had an old 3 barrel combo lock on it. They just snapped it clean.
Did the same thing to my back screen door and smashed through the locked wooden door. All electronics, computing gone.

Are thieves getting more aggressive or what?

Locks only keep honest people out

As a locksmith, I can confirm. Locks are there as deterrents for opportunistic thieves. If someone really wants your shit, they will get it. Locks are only there to slow people down.

  • Pass a D lock through the back wheel, frame, and anchor point. Pass a cable lock through your helmet, and through the front wheel, frame, and anchor point. For extra protection replace cable lock with a 2nd D lock.

Poll option #5: Install an alarm/immobilizer.

  • By riding a crappy looking bike. No emotional attachment. Less likely to be stolen too.

  • Abus Rock 83/80 padlock. Best part is you can get it keyed the same as your house key. Downside, it weights about the same as a small car. :D

As a locksmith, please donā€™t buy anything this ā€œMasterlockā€ written on it. And donā€™t buy any combination style locks. I can decode a combination lock in about 30 seconds.

You could try out ā€œkryptoniteā€ bike locks. I know they make a lot of motorcycle locks, but pretty sure they make bicycle locks as well…

Different bikes, different situations, different solutions. I have a few bikes, one high value, one reasonable value and some cheapies. At work they are within a secure depot with a cheap lock to stop ā€˜pranksā€™

Option one: donā€™t leave it where someone is likely to steal it. Itā€™s in the garage, in the Ute Iā€™m driving or under my bum.
Option two: use a basic lock, but only for a short time, when I can see it, or in a public/monitored place. Not for my good bike, not in the same place at a regular time.
Option three: tangle it up with helmets, kids bikes, posts to make it more difficult to grab and run - again in sight, not far away and only cheap bikes eg: if we stop for play time at the park, while camping - usually locked overnight with a long cable through the lot.
Option four: get a really good lock and insurance.

    • In the Ute Iā€™m drivingĀ

Thats where I had mine was stolen from. Plus another $300,to replace the smashed glass.

      • Bummer.

Yeah, I wonā€™t leave mine for any more than going in to pay for fuel. Normally thereā€™d also be someone else in the vehicle to stay and mind it too.

Take seat out and replace with sharp steel spike. If they try and sit down, it will get interesting.

I use an Axa Defender wheel lock - great for those times when there's nothing to secure your bike to with a chain. (When there is,i use the plug in wire rope chain that goes with it). Like all locks it's not perfect but it's very convenient and makes it hard for an opportunistic thief to ride away with it.

I use one of these: https://www.hiplok.com/hiplok-original/

But as someone said, if they want it, they're going to steal it. I've had one bike stolen and I don't park in the city after dark or for long periods.

Get a can of pink spray paint and roughly spray paint bike. The more amateur you make it look safer bike will be. Try get paint on the tyres too.

  • G'day everyone This is OP.
Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. Some suggestions are very interesting .
I can see that the fear of bike being stolen is very common (unless its a very cheap bike).
One thing i don't understand is why the cops are not laying a trap to catch these thieves , especially in the city where this is so common after daylight.
Fear should be developed inside people who rob or get tempted to rob the bike.
Fear of a trap, fear of someone is watching , the bike is not locked on purpose as it is being monitored.
This way it would be easier for the community.
Anyways this is just my one cent , i shall come out with nother cent later (one pending).

    • I'd rather the cops were focused on more important issues than bike theft, which would have a typical replacement value under $2k
