Lounge Access in Singapore Airport

Hi Guys,

Tried to find the information elsewhere on the internet and among the forums but nothing specific to my case, or I didn't know the proper search terms to look for.

Getting married in December and my then wife and I are travelling to Taiwan for our honeymoon, but en route to Taiwan my extended family wanted to have a banquet reception dinner (separate from my Australian one) in Malaysia. My flight details are essentially outlined below:

  • Sydney to Singapore via Canberra (Arrive at 5am) on Singapore Airlines booked through Virign
  • Singapore to Regional Malaysian City (Departure at 12:45pm) on Malaysian Airlines
  • Regional Malaysian City to Taiwan on Malaysian Airlines (After a few days in Malaysia)
  • Taiwan to Sydney via Singapore on Singapore Airlines.

I have been to Singapore Airport quite a few times and for long transits i have no trouble sleeping and resting in their many free lounges but my fiance has a dad who is a platinum FF which means she's pretty much always flown business class and had access to lounges etc. She says that even in business class she's unable to sleep well on the plane (so she pretty much has no chance in economy) so it'll be guaranteed that she'll need to sleep at Singapore Airport. She says she's fine to sleep in the free access lounges but I know she would appreciate it if she could freshen up and have a shower and such.

My question is, can I get access to the Singapore Airlines lounge if i purchase a pass for the two of us given that our onward flight isn't with singapore airlines (since they don't fly the route) or is that not possible? I know we'd have to go landside to collect our baggage but I was thinking that it could be worth having my fiance chill out in the lounge while I go collect our baggage so that she can rest for a bit. I don't think she's particularly keen on leaving the airport to go to a hotel to sleep either but potentially instead of the lounge I could check her into one of the airside hotels for 6 hours or so.

Any further information would be helpful especially if there's something I haven't though of or taken into consideration.

Thanks in advance.

Yup, her dad even offered to upgrade us to business flights and she wanted to make a point of us 'flying within our means' hahah

I would just book the 6 hour stay at the ambassador transit lounge. Book direct because agoda does not know how to handle the 6 hour block based booking and will overcharge

  • there is a hotel and you can take the room for few hours

    • short stay hotel ;)
actually probably better than a lounge.

      • short stay hotel ;)

I doubt newlyweds do much sleeping in a hotel room that goes by the hour!

    • Yeah another vote for the aerotel.
Spent 6hrs there and got some much needed sleep

  • if you have to go out anyway, there's always the Crowne Plaza hotel which is walking distance (Even with luggage) from several of the Terminals. I've stayed there before and it was fine.

  • Why not take a day time flight instead of a night time flight?

    • Hahaha there's a number of factors. We get married the week before Christmas, and her family wanted us to stay for Christmas lunch so we're leaving christmas night - I start back at work early Jan so every day counts.

There's zero chance of getting into a Singapore Airlines lounge when your onwards flight is with Malaysia Airlines.

Since you're transiting in Singapore on both legs of your journey, you should be eligible for the free $20 Changi voucher.. Even if your SYD-SIN and TPE-SYD tickets are separate, you should be eligible if you show them both tickets.

For passengers whose transit itinerary (through Singapore) was issued over two or more separate e-tickets, all e-tickets must be presented to the counter staff. The staff reserves the right to reject the collection for reasons including but not restricted to insufficient supporting documents.

The $20 voucher can be used for 2 hrs access to the Ambassador Lounge in T2 and T3.

    • Ahhh i see, thanks very much. I was aware of the voucher but didn't think I would meet the requirements. I'll definitely check it out and 2 hours of access in the Ambassador Lounge would be fantastic.

      2 Hours??? @Pixel only needs 30 seconds … 45 tops on a bad day.

Use the remaining $19.50 for some ramen in the food court.

I'm not 100% sure they're entitled to the voucher as the end point with SIA is SIN. In the clause stated on your link.
The OP changes to Malaysia air which I think voids the promotion but could be wrong.

Passengers must be on transit in Singapore on both legs of their journey, which means Singapore is neither the point of origin nor the end destination.

Singapore Airlines, SilkAir or Air New Zealand customers whose point of origin (country where your trip originates from), is one of the following countries:
      Australia

      • This is what I thought, but wasn't sure if I could make my point since Singapore Airlines doesn't fly my onward route.

  • Plaza Premium Lounge in T1 is pay entry lounge. Granted it's not as nice as Singapore Airline lounge. But it has shower, food and places to relax.

T1 Aerotel SGD140 (twin room for 2 adults) for 6 hours, en-suite bathroom. Done that during my last trip 10 hours transit in Changi, good place to Swim, Chill and Relax.

Btw, Malaysian don't need to sleep. They spend time on delicious food.

  • There are a few pay-per-use lounges in Changi airport.

I usually use the SATS Premier Lounge so I wouldn't know whether these are any good or not.

  • check if Singapore Airlines will check your luggage through to malaysia. should be ok. then check into the airside hotel for 6 hours. this might not be much more dearer than paying for 2 single lounge access.

You just need to go to the transfer desk airside to get your onwards boarding pass.

If you have to leave the airport to collect the luggage, you can only check in 3 hours before flight. might be in your own landside.

    • I know Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airlines are partners but not sure if they will check my baggage through. I've asked them before and sometimes they're happy to but often they say because they're not on the same ticket they won't do it. I've read on forums that going to the transfer desk there's a possibility that I can ask someone to forward my baggage onward to the Malaysian Flight, do you know anything about this?

      Cheers

  • Do you have credit cards with Priority Pass visits?

    • No, don't have any credit cards with Priority Pass visits unfortunately

  • FILO is a good app to suss this sort of thing out.
It will give u a step by step info on how to get to the lounge / hotel etc

  • I used the free $20 Changi voucher to access the Ambassador's Lounge last week. It's a very small lounge and not overly comfortable chairs (doubt you would be able to sleep in them if you can't sleep in Business Class on a plane). There's a cinema next door which I didn't go in to, but maybe you could sleep better in there. :-) I'd vote for the airport hotel for 6 hours instead.

Thanks for your reply! That's helpful to know :)

    • Ambassador is not the best.
For private lounges I feel the dnata one in T3 is the best, with free food, drinks incl alcohol, showers with free towels.

I've used it on arrival then gone out for meetings and then back in the evening for another shower before boarding my flight home

Or yes for a longer transit aerotel is best.

      • Thanks for your information! I think if we're going to spend money on a private lounge that isn't the ambassador (which we can get $20 each) we probably will just go with a short stay hotel. Did you pay for it prior to going or do you have a priority pass?

        • The aerotel is very popular and should be pre booked.

I will be using aerotel in early Nov and will book it shortly. Aerotel has to be paid for.

The dnata lounge is free from priority pass or I think you can also pre purchase a single entry, maybe via dragon pass, not sure.

If I was doing that flight via Canberra in Y I'd book aerotel for a little bit of sleep

        • @daft009: Thanks very much, I think that's sound advice!
