Long Service Advice State to Commonwealth Government and Vice Versa Transfer and Recognition of Prior Service

I am leaving my state government job for a federal government job. No break in service. Others at work have told me it is possible to transfer my LSL, Leave and prior service recognition but no one has actually done so themselves. I have submitted a query with HR but they are very slow. Hopefully a fellow ozbargainer has gone through the process and can advise? Has anyone experienced any problems with the transfer and anything i need to organise if the process breaks down. I also envisage that I may return to state government at some stage during my career and will this cause any problems later on? A few have recommended just to cash it in but I would prefer the LSL, annual leave, sick leave to carry over to the new job.

  • You are correct and able to do so. We had s guy who drove buses in Sydney, for the state government and transferred his leave, sick leave and commencement date over to Australia post (federal).

Unsure how he did this but very interested to know if you can go from federal to state.

  • Yes.

  • HR don't know where to look and you'll have died of old age before they find it. Hold their hand and use the operative word "PORTABLE" they should be able to search it from there if it has been written into legislation. Or ring the Feds they would have done more onboards than departures and have been asked the Q.
I have never worked for the government but do have a portable LSL with them built into my work.

You just have to be politely insistent with HR to get it transfered. Ideally get it included in your letter of offer.

I believe it depends on the departments concerned. I’ve never worked for the government, so haven’t personally done it - however my wife transferred from NSW state to Federal some years ago, and all her entitlements and recognition of service transferred. It’s usually a question for the agency you’re going to as far as I know

  • I would trust your HR department (even if slow) rather than Ozbargainer advice for your particular situation :)

  • My wife moved from VPS to APS. Only the service for long service eligibility would transfer. For long service leave your new service HR will send a form to all your claimed previous employers to certify the length of service, breaks, LSL taken. Rules for long service access will be based on your new service, APS.
You will be paid out AL by your current employer and can’t take any SL with you.
Regarding coming back, it depends on the State’s LSL rules. I understand that in VPS they don’t accept transfers, but I maybe incorrect.
