Domain Name Renew

Anyone aware of cheap domain renews? I'm with GoDaddy, US$20 a year, haven't seen promo code for renews for years, any other decent alternatives?

stack social I think it is has .tech domains, I think they're fairly new so theres quite a fair few available and I think its like 60 bucks for 10 years so not bad if you don't want to keep renewing.

  • It's a .com domain. Would probably stay with GoDaddy unless saving is significant (i.e. half price).

Do go daddy really charge $20 a year just for name? That seems crazy high.

namesilo.com transfer is US$8.39/yr for .com

zuver.net.au, a subsidiary of Ventra IP, A$16 and free ID protection.

Porkbun is cheap for domain name only. Hosting isn’t so cheap but they have a free option.

Namesilo is a good one too

  • Have a look at this page.

  • Thanks for bringing this up. I never bothered changing from Namecheap since the renewal prices were consistent (and not worth using a voucher to avoid every year) but I just found out they increased their prices this year!

I guess Porkbun is the new Namecheap.

Ok. I just transferred a domain to Porkbun. I wouldn't recommend a transfer to them for critical websites.

The domain management link just redirects to the purchase screen. I read in a review that you couldn't modify DNS records with Porkbun before the registrar switch and I guess it's true.

      Another update.

It just turns out their website is unintuitive (and it turns out buggy).

They apparently do transfer third-party nameservers if in use and there is a workaround if you're using your previous registrar for DNS (https://kb.porkbun.com/article/89-how-to-transfer-your-domai…).

      • I hate to break it to you but that's just the way it is when you transfer a domain name your DNS Zone does not come with you only name servers are transferred with the domain name so if you're using your included DNS hosting with your registrar currently and they kill it when you transfer your domain name you will lose your DNS Zone so you need to ensure you do a transfer of your DNS Zone and change your name servers before you do a transfer your new provider to ensure no down time.

That support guide kinda walk she threw it however this is not a Porkbun thing this is every registrar also selecting your new registrar to change the name servers when you do a transfer they're not going to be able to do that into the domain name has transferred because they need control to be able to do it.

        • I know. I do this quite a bit. That's why I was pointing out how strange it was to have no configuration options! I think you completely misunderstood my complaint (I almost never have
my registrar doing DNS…I posted the link to help others and was relaying my relief of them being legit afterall…).

The domain management link was redirecting to purchase a new domain and you had to click on the "Transfers" button in the top menu to configure anything before the transfer was complete. It's a Porkbun web design issue.

Also one shouldn't write replies that late in the evening what a mess that is and I've missed my opportunity to edit so here's an edited version below.

I hate to break it to you but that's just the way it is when you transfer a domain name your DNS Zone does not come with you only name servers are transferred with the domain name.

So if you're using your included DNS hosting with your registrar currently and they kill it when you transfer your domain name you will lose your DNS Zone so you need to ensure you do a transfer of your DNS Zone and change your name servers before you do a transfer to your new provider to ensure no down time.

That support guide kinda walk she threw how to do it with no down time with them. However this is not a Porkbun thing this is every registrar.

Also opting to get the new registrar to change the name servers when you do a transfer they're not going to be able to do that until the domain name has transferred because they need control to be able to do it. So make sure that's done before the transfer outbound has been approved.

I know. I do this quite a bit.

As do I. then in that case you should probably just consider my post as general advice to anyone transferring a domain name a lot of people are not aware of the problems that can be caused when doing a domain name transfer.

The domain management link was redirecting to purchase a new domain and you had to click on the "Transfers" button in the top menu to configure anything before the transfer was complete. It's a web design issue.

I've never had a problem with them. Several registrars, That let you configure DNS before you start your transfer do something similar they put all the features you can actually use before the domain name has transferred in with the domain name in the transfers tab. So I guess I've just had more experience with this sort of interface implementation.

However as you're aware there is not many providers that actually let you do this and most do kill your DNS Zone the moment you transfer your domain name out so you have to normally migrate DNS if hosted with the registrar somewhere else while doing a transfer.

That's why I was pointing out how strange it was to have no configuration options! I think you completely misunderstood my complaint (I posted the link to help others…).

However you did have the configuration options they just weren't in the place you expected them to be. The section you went to is where everything is managed once the domain name is under their control I will agree with you strongly it probably should redirect you to the transfer section to make those changes until the domain name has fully transferred into their system. At the other providers I mentioned the domain name doesn't show up under management until it has left the transfer section by fully completing and exiting the transfer process.

The guys and girls over there are pretty good to deal with send them your feedback I'm sure they'll be more than happy to hear it.

        • @tonyduffe: Thanks for the assurances. I trust reviews on OzBargain more since those specialty review sites are easily manipulated (like those 5 star low-end VPSs that shut down after less than a year :)).

        • @peterpeterpumpkin: Porkbun happens to be owned by "Top Level Design" they are the registry operator for three new gTLDs .design, .ink and .wiki and they have been exceptional to deal with my standard recommendation is still to use VentraIP as I like to use an Australian company when possible and the majority of my domain names are registered with their wholesale division Synergy Wholesale.

The three big overseas ones I like are Uniregistry, Porkbun and NameSilo. They're useful when the pricing is too high here or if they're offering a first year discount or if it's just an extension not supported by Synergy Wholesale.

  • Thanks all the responses.

Looks like will have to stick with GoDaddy.

Their price includes 2 features I need, I guess US$20 is reasonable for their value added services, not just domain name hosting using their name servers.

    • What services are they including that you don't seem to be able to get anywhere else?

      • I'm sure similar services are available elsewhere but probably not as part of the basic domain registration fee.

Namely email forward and SMTP mail.

        • With email forward I can setup specific and catchall email addresses and forward them to one or multiple mailboxes. The catchall function is super handy for setup multiple accounts for freebie stuff.

        • The SMTP account allows me to send email from gmail (for example) that appears to come from my domain, without "on behalf of".

Using both features, I can send and receive email using my domain email address(es) without revealing the backend mailbox provider. And I can change the backend without the need to tell any of my contacts.

        • The SMTP account allows me to send email from gmail (for example) that appears to come from my domain, without "on behalf of".

I'm not aware of Go Daddy giving that away for free so I think you're paying for that in your $20US or you're going to be billed separately at a later date for that service as the $20 price sounds about right for the domain name plus WHOIS Privacy. Are you sure you're using go daddy for that? Not one of the other many free transactional email provider offers.

        • $20 doesn't include privacy guard (or whatever they call it), so a WHOIS lookup reveals my PO Box address.

The email account is called "personal email" in GoDaddy console, it's listed as "free with domain". I don't use this mailbox to receive emails, but I use the credential to send email through their SMTP server.

So basically the US$20 domain renew includes 100 email forwards and 1 free email account.
