  • Can Windows and apps such as games be installed on this or just data?

    • +1

      Look up Windows To Go.

      • +1

        Also look up portable apps.
I use over 30G in apps alone. Great for on the go.

  • Windows can be only be installed on certain versions. Is this correct?

    • +2

If you mean can Windows to Go only be installed using certain versions of Windows the answer is yes, AFAIK, you can only use Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Education and some Windows 8 versions to install WTG.

So you can workaround this by installing Windows 10 Enterprise onto a virtual machine and make the WTG installation using the VM.

You can use free open sores Virtualbox to make a virtual machine and then install Windows 10 Enterprise using the Windows 10 ISO from MS for free.

There is also a commercial application that make Windows to Go installations.

      • Umm, thank you for that info. Sounds complicated though. Might be better off getting msata ssd on which any versions of Windows should be suitable.

  • Might be easier to boot Linux and run Windows or OS X in a Virtual Machine on these.

  • What's the value proposition of these? Any chance someone can summarise for me if possible? Thank you in advance

      1. It's about the speediest SATA3-based external SSD on market
      2. The thing is tiny. Slightly bigger than a stack of business cards.
      3. Uses one cable.
      4. Sleek alum chassis, drop resistance.
    • Speed and portability and weight / size. No need for a power brick (one less thing to break and suck juice). If you travel a lot they are fantastic as a portal drive. Or at home / office where files just move around so much quicker. They also don't need to spin up like a spinning drive (we let some of our external drives power down). Much, much cooler. Everything about them (except price vs conventional spinning drives) just kills it. No way I want to go back to spinning drives. And I know this sounds silly, but no vibration or noise on a desk when you are in a quiet room (no drive hum).
