Mirabella Touch Lamp - Banker's Lamp K-Mart Clearance $12

190

The famous Banker's lamp. This is the cheapest I have seen for this and it's a touch lamp.
Got one from K-mart (Carousal, WA) today but found:
1. it only has a level of touch. On or Off and no dimming
2. Max is only 18w. It is alright if using Energy saver bulb

I used a 14w energy saver globe and it is good enough as a table lamp. Pretty good as my bed side lamp for reading. Will look even better if I have loads of cash stack up beside the lamp :P

At North Rocks, Sydney these clearance lighting products are all on the normal shelves, with the yellow clearance price tags on them.

Kmart also have the Mirabella Glitter and Lava lamps for $10. Both are super retro - we sold the original ones in a lighting shop I worked in back in the very early 80's… they were about as mandatory back then as iPods are now days!

Plus Kmart North Rocks had heaps of LED "Bar Open" signs for $8 that didn't look too bad (expecially when viewed vie beer goggles).

Note that Mirabella is a REALLY cheap and nasty brand, but the lighting products are what people in the lighting industry would kindly term as "servicable". The lamps (light bulbs) they sell are absolute rubbish, but you get what you pay for, I guess.

    • i saw the LED lamps. are they bright? do have interest on them

  • can someone tell me if there is a transformer, or is it straight through 240v?

because a lot of cheap lamps Ive bought crap themselves after a few months because of poor transformers… and then the lamps themselves are useless.

any extra info or pics greatly appreciated.

    They are 240v.

Also they arent allowed to make 3 level touch lamps or dimming lamps anymore as the energy saving globes don't work with them. Just so you know :)

What llama said is true, Mirabella lamps and globes dont last, I work in a lighting store and the amount of customers that come in complaining about Mirabella and we dont even sell them. You get what you pay for :)

    • This is not entirely true.
This is correct for the tubular style lightglobes, they cannot be dimmed: eg: http://images.philips.com/is/image/PhilipsConsumer/929689451401-GAL-global?wid=430&hei=430&$jpglarge$

However, this type of energy saving globe can be dimmed and is legally sold (almost an incadencent globe):

    • Thanks for confirming what others have said about Mirabella bulbs. I don't know why Mirabella isn't ashamed to be in business.

    • thanks mate

Yes they are halogen globes and are energy saving (though not as much as the fluoro), but for this light they cant be used, cause the maximum is 18watt and the minimum halogen globe is in the 20 watt range (depending on specific brand).

What I meant is that they dont make the touch 3 level lamps anymore because you cant use the fluoro globes in the 3 stage, so they decided to ban the 3 levels all together.

  • Is the shade made of glass or cheap plastic?

    • It's 100% cheap plastic, made to look like glass, but when you turn the shade upside down you'll see the chinese cheapness. =D I was going to buy one at Kmart Footscray (VIC) but was turned away from the plastic shade. I too have a glass shaded one and to be honest it gets quite warm using halogen globes (60w max).

      • Thanks for the info. Just as I thought after reading that it was 18W rated max.

  • Is it bright?

  • I bought one - it is plastic and cheap. It is $12 though so I wasn't expecting much.

What happens if I use a 40w bulb in it?

    • What happens if I use a 40w bulb in it?

      big potential fire risk

a few(1-3) W over the max wouldn't matter, but a big difference , in your case does

  • I bought one of these more than a month ago at this price. Similar mirabella bankers lamps at big w are near 40 bucks. The shade is cheap plastic but the touch base seems decent. Will do til I buy a real bankers lamp.
