Is any Seiko watch really worth $3000?

    • Probably those under the Grand Seiko line.

    • What in your eyes make a watch worth a certain amount?

    • -1

This one says it automatically adjusts time zones based on GPS, calendar will be correct until 2100, daylight savings adjustment, and water resistant up to 100 meters. Apple Watch will do all of those things and more, but is only rated for up to 50m water resistance.

I always thought seiko was a cheap brand, like a timex.

Nah, Seiko and Citizen are the premium Japanese brands, Timex was American and is now rubbish.

Euro watches just sell on snob value in my opinion, Omega for example are good but way overpriced.

        • it's all down to whether the watch's movement is based on mechanical or quartz

quartz movement is cheap and mass produced, that does not need specially trained staff and rigorous testing, the whole assembly line probably can be automated with robots

while mechanical require specially trained watchmakers hand assembled and rigorous testing for how accurate the movement will be, so quantity is limited

time keeping wise, quartz is a superior technology

but watch collectors would often go for mechanicals, because they are an intricate piece of art; but also a pain, because they are spring driven, so you either need to wear it everyday or keep on a watch winder else it will stop

calendar will be correct until 2100

Well 2100 is only 58 minutes away as I post this

  • I was seriously considering an Atron for ~5k a few years back… I ended up buying a smartwatch (moto360), then a $100 Seiko
