From website:

July 20, 2020 marked the opening of Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, a space devoted to producing Grand Seiko mechanical watches and other high-end timepieces. This workshop was effectively added to the Shizukuishi Watch Studio, a high-end watch and movement manufacturing site of Morioka Seiko Instruments (located in the town of Shizukuishi in Iwate Prefecture).
The new studio was completed on the milestone sixtieth anniversary of the birth of the Grand Seiko brand. The design is the brainchild of Kengo Kuma, a celebrated Japanese architect also famed for his work on the new Japan National Stadium finished in 2019.

I thought you get the watch for free

GS was used to be not as expensive as nowadays when it was only available in Japan and no internet to spread the information. On the other hand, many people who knew GS but did not want to pay a higher price for a premium "Seiko" back in those days.

    • seiko used to be 'not that expensive'

now everyone is on their dick then of course seiko wants to get every dollar

      toyota = seiko

      lexus = GS

    It's always been free.

  • Their watches are still great value despite the 20% or so uplift in price. But don't think the new price point makes them as attractive to many.
They don't have great metal straps. But for grand Seiko it's all about the dial.

Great value is debatable, GS is still relatively unknown outside of watch enthusiasts and tanks in value on the secondary market. Don't know why they’ve chosen to price themselves alongside Omega and Rolex (and still trying to move up market), it's probably the reason why they only release limited editions to help their watches maintain at least some value on the secondary market.

GS is all about the movement and to a lesser extent the dial imo. Their non-stop spamming of limited/special editions in their lower ranges have ended up with quite a few overlaps of similar dial finishes. Their bracelets are horrible although it is improving, Zaratsu polishing isn't unique, it's overrated and just doesn't hold up long term because you basically end up seeing every smudge and every scratch.

Agree. The push to overprice everything starts at the bottom. Seiko also had some unique models, such as those with hand painted Urushi dials, the new versions of which have tripled in price.

      • They price themself at that bracket because they generally perform at that bracket. The spring drive is a great movement, but the autos don't compare to Rolex auto movement. It's why I didn't mention movement. The limited editions are what's allowing them to hold a higher price point, but their marketing has helped promote the name a fair bit. While mainly watch enthusiast are aware of this brand, it's still a big gain over say 10 - 15 years ago.
Anyway as a complete package they are still great, but feeling less great than when they were gaining traction a decade or so ago.

I agree Grand Seiko is worth the money! As much as you can say a luxury watch is worth it. Compared to Rolex and playing the game, GS models are available and ready to buy, except for the really exceptional and special edition models. I have a SBGX261 and the quality, polishing and finish is unreal despite being "entry level" GS. The metal bracelet is of fine quality like the rest of the watch, the problem that people complain about is the lack of any micro-adjustment so you may not be able to get the perfect fit. GS will need to remedy this at some point in the future as even cheaper microbrand and aliexpress watches these days are coming with tool-less quick adjusting clasps. Already looking at Spring Drive GS's for my next watch possibly SBGA211 or 413, as I'm a happy customer after my first.

I bought my first GS 5 or so years ago. Have 2 but got rid of one as I try to keep different brands in my collection. Ironically I kept my quartz and sold my auto. Have not bought into the spring drive yet.

Not really a deal if it's always been free.
    More like a PSA.

Nico says "Grand Seiko - never spend over a grand on a Seiko".

Springdrive are great and they are very nice but way over priced now. You'd want a heavy discount, fairly overpriced now.

I think we could fix the title a bit.

    • You want a heavy discount? Buy preowned.

      • around $8-9k for a year old white birch sd is great.

      • Used to be $6k and like a lot of brands the RRP has doubled. Yes used, near new and or with good service history.

Point it you could get an omega or Tudor for that money.

  • OP have you been? Is it worth the cost?

    • Booked my tickets. Came across this in my itinerary planning. Clubbing it with
      - Tohoku: Kitakami Tenschochi Park
      - Aamori: swordsmith experience, cherry blossoms, rural Japan
      - Mount Iwate
      - Hachimantai: volcanic peaks, onsens
      - Seiko museum (Ginza)
      - Kurono Aayoma salon
      - Honda collection hall (Motegi)
      - Zao onsen (Yamagata)
      - Osaka street food
      - Ide sake brewery
      - Mt. Fuji

  • Tried booking for Jan/Feb, not available.
