Thanks OP. I keep looking for Skype half price deals and always stock up

On another note, I did read somewhere on OzB that you can use these skype credit for microsoft office subscription. I cannot seem to find that forum post. Could anyone please shed some light on this.

    Thank you kindly

    • Would good to know how to do this as well.

    • I vaguely recall it was the other way around!

    • Found what I was thinking, though sorry if not helpful for your situation! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/402240

Yes, you can (could at the time, possibly still now)…
Receive Office 365 as part of a qualifying skype subscription:
I'm not sure which plans qualify because my skype 'home' is currently set to a non-Aus region but, it was explained pretty well in this thread with pics from last year

I don't think there is a (legitimate) way to access and use your skype $ credit to pay for MS products, services, or subs in their broader catalogue on other MS sites. Otherwise, every gamer would be getting half price hardware and games, and the credit farmers and arbitragers would be all over it. IMHO Skype is able to offer these huge discounts on gift cards in the same way mobile plans used to be advertised as pay "$39/mth for $750 haha worth of phone calls" (by super inflating the per min rates).

When I originally posted this, there appeared to be plenty of eligible subscriptions that had Office 365 bundled with it. However, that doesn't appear to be the case any longer.

I didn't think skype is still around. Haven't used them for about 10years

Was good before Microsoft took over, it's quickly being forgotten about.

Truth is, I just came here to see if anyone had posted such a comment :)

If you or your family members occasionally (rather not too frequently) call abroad, this is one of the cheapest (at half price) and most reliable options:

      • Very long Skype credit expiry and Pay as you go, so you don’t have to bear unnecessary fixed cost with intl calls included on your mobile plan
      • You can share your Skype account with family and everyone can use the common credit
      • I don’t even check the call prices as it’s half priced anyway when you buy credits in these deals
      • I don’t mind using Whatsapp for free calling but at times internet on the other end isn’t good enough and often call quality isn’t as good as Skype

I don’t mind using Whatsapp for free calling but at times internet on the other end isn’t good enough and often call quality isn’t as good as Skype

Uhmm, if internet on the other end isn't good, skype won't magically perform better.

        • +2

Isn't that the actual point with Skype? The "other end" does not even need internet at all, as you are actually using the phone network? :)

        • @nortyjak: Absolutely. But the comment talks about internet calling calling - so I thought the comment was about internet calling on both ends. But you are right Skype can be used to call phones on a phone network.

Main source of revenue would be businesses. A lot of multinationals (Big 4 Accounting, Big 4 Banks) use Skype for Business as it integrates well with everything else. My company recently swapped from desk phones to VoIP on Skype. One step closer to hot desking…

Pretty good move by Microsoft though.

Good for oversea travelling when you want to ring oversea numbers. Much cheaper rate than any of the roaming sim.

    • I guess that assumes you have internet access… but then most people I would call are on other voip apps like whatsapp, google hangouts, etc

I also find that calling rates from google voice are cheaper than skype, so the value of 50% saving is somewhat eroded.

      • Well no, the 50% off is what makes Skype the better deal as Google Voice is not cheaper than Skype by 50% or more.

        • Isn’t google voice only available for USA though?

        • Umm - did you actually check skype's prices? The skype PAYG rates, they actually are 50% more than google's. Take a look at a few countries like india/china/united kingdom.

Yeah, you could sign up for a skype monthly plan, but we're already at a pretty extreme use-case: Use while travelling overseas, access to internet, but no roaming.

@salmon123: good point. The thing I like Skype is that you can rent a number and redirect important text message or calls to your primary mobile number.
Can google voice call mobile numbers in other countries like Skype? If so I will have to check it out.

Interesting … more free burritos and ubers?

        • @ashdays:

I think it depends what features you want. Things like inbound calling number, etc are only in the US

For comparing to skype, if you just want to make outbound calls to a physical number, you can do it through google hangouts on your phone. The credit on this app is inter-changeable with google voice.

        • @salmon123: India with Google is 1.1c, Skype is 1.5c before the discount. What am I missing?

        • @cymon:

I see India as 1.8c (billing in USD) on Skype on their payg plan.

Other countries are even more expensive. The savings with these gift cards are marginal at best.

          This is where we're different.

Did your mama tell you, you were special?

        • @arctan:

Interested in how you use Skype to redirect text messages? I'm going to be living in the UK next year and want to keep my AU mobile number available without using it roamed - I'm using a Skype number with call forwarding for calls but thought I would have to use an Android SMS -> email forwarding solution for texts..

          Cheers.

        • @whiffyfuzzball: My mistake, txt message has to go through other ways. Skype is not capable on txt forwarding.

  • Anyone finding Skype having a bad lag (1-2 second) in the last couple of months?

I tried using wifi and 4g, both having the same lag.

  • Can anyone show me to subscribe to Skype plan includes Office 365? I can’t find any plans with Office 365. Thanks.

Thanks heaps OP! Needed this deal to come up before november.. I'm still using this for my skype in number which i never use but have it on my business card… ugh.

    Thanks OP.
Hard to find any other cheap calling options to UAE.

  • If I have an ongoing subscription and I'm being charged monthly now, can I use those cards to pay for it?

    • +1

Yes, you can - I've been doing it that way for a long while.

      • Thank you - one more: I got two cards today, should I add the credit from both at the same time and it will stack? This is how it should work, but hell knows to me atm.

        • Yes that works fine. I just added $200 of credit (8 x $25 vouchers) to mine.

    • Yes but be sure to change your payment method from card to your credit.

      • Great, thanks heaps man.

  • Hi,
I am looking to buy multiple Skype Gift Cards. Please PM me if you have any spares available for sale.
    Thanks
