keyboard looks like they took a surface pro cover and glued it onto the base. It looks tacky.

Check out steps 4 and 5.

No surprise it gets a zero repairability score…

well that's bad. You have to destroy the keyboard base and replace it. They obviously want you to pay MS to do it for you, and at a huge premium.

        • You expect that sort of thing on a tablet or phone not a laptop.

    • It actually feels okay in person

      • The Alcantara will look awful after a few months from the oils it absorbs from your palms.

        • I have a surface pro with the type cover and it hasn't noticeably deteriorated after a year.

        • oils it absorbs from your palms.

I have no problem may be I don't have oily palms.

        • @superforever: From another commenter below: https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2018/06/microsoft-surface-laptop-…

may be I don't have oily palms.

Everyone has oil in their skin. If you don't, something is wrong with you, and all your skin will be dry and cracked, and you'll bleed. This will happen if you wash your hands excessively. You're stripping away the oils.

        • @lostn:

I mean not that oily or may be I am not using it a lot, I did see that happened with my son Acer silver laptop, so not limited to Surface.

        • @superforever: It should wipe off and be easier to clean on a 'silver' surface. Fabric materials will absorb it.

        • @lostn:

Not really still some dark mark on the palmtop after cleaned. That is why I prefer black even my surface pro keyboard.

  • i7 is cheaper then i5 with the same RAM and Storage config. Do I miss something? 😵

    still overpriced

  • Can you switch to Windows 10 pro?

    • +1

yes, but you can't switch back

  • FYI New model coming out 2nd Oct.

Let the previous versions let you detach the screen.
What is the benefit of this version beside from the faster clock speeds?

    • +1

Erm, no. You're mistaken. This is a Surface Laptop, not a Surface Pro or Surface Book.

    • Oops. I mean surface book.
I will google surface book verus surface laptop.

      • +4

surface book - surface pro with a proper keyboard and weird hinge.

  • That long term use sweat and oil on the fabric….

    • Yep. This was a huge factor in me not getting one when they came out. I've used Alcantara keyboards on my old Surface Pros, and no thanks for long term use.
I got a Surface Book 2 instead. Best laptop I've ever owned.

  • i5 probably safer anyways as I use to cook bacon and eggs on my Surface Pro 2 a couple years ago. And that was just i5 also.

    • Surface Pro 2 a couple years ago.

As your said several years ago technology

      • Well I'm hoping they have fixed the thermals. I'm sure Microsoft know what they're doing!

        • Well I'm hoping they have fixed the thermals. I'm sure Microsoft know what they're doing!

More because of the CPU and chipset, the latest model is a lot better on that.

  • Hey guys whats better this or a dell xps 13?

    • Design, lightweight, portability - Surface
ports, upgrade options - xps 13

      • +1

How could Surface be better at design, lightweight and portability?

    • I wouldn't buy either but if I really had to choose I'd just go with the Dell. You might be missing out on microsoft build quality but from what I've seen from the thousand videos I've watched of the XPS 13 it's way more than acceptable and one of the best in windows market.

  • Wait for 8th Gen Intel versions.

I bought one from last HN sale. Same price. Bought it 3 weeks ago (still have receipt) and realised I have no much use for it. Brand new in the box. Will let it go for $1,450.

    • arent you allowed to return it back? or did you open it?

      • Can I return? I’ve opened the box..

    • Where r u located? Inbox me!
