Any Good? Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Ryzen 7

Hi guys, I've found what appears to be a pretty good deal on ebay for a Dell laptop for $960, but I'm not sure if I should pull the trigger. Specs are:

CPU: Ryzen 7 2700U w/ Vega10 Graphics
SSD: 256GB
RAM: 8GB DDR4 2400MHz
Display: 15.6-inch 1080p

Overall the reviews for this laptop aren't stellar. I've heard that there's problem with the fans being a bit loud and I'm also concerned about the battery life and poor screen quality.

I'm mainly going to be using this laptop for uni, not gaming. My firm prerequisites are SSD and under $1000. Important factors that might change my decision are battery life and weight/bulkiness, but 256GB SSD and amazing cpu for this price is hard to pass up on…

Has anybody purchased this laptop and can advise me on the quality? If not, are there any other forums I could post in to get some more input? And finally, is this a good deal or should I wait and purchase a different laptop?

  • Why don't you check the discussions in some of the recent deals?

    • Thanks, I saw those deals before, but somehow didn't think they were for the same thing :/

I've done some more looking around and the battery life ~ 4 hrs with casual use and its competitor, the Thinkpad E485, also has a similar battery life, so I think I'll wait on this one.

God I wish there was a cheap laptop with 256 GB SSD, decent cpu and a long battery life. Surely manufacturers could produce that for like $800…

  • No idea if the ThinkPad's are still on sale, but check out the lenovo ThinkPad ex85 (either 5 or 4 depending on if you want 15" or 14")

Pretty sure they were sitting in the $800~ range thanks to deals. They had a deal they pretty much made the upgrade to ryzen 7 free, no idea if that's still going either.

TL;DR, give em a look. Just make sure to buy your own HDD/SSD upgrade, the one's on the site seem expensive.

(Also try to run with the "pre-built" versions for the sake of quicker shipping)

  • EDIT - JUST REALISED I'VE ALREADY POSTED HERE. WOULD DELETE MY PREVIOUS COMMENT BUT THAT BIT HAS APPEARED TO HAVE DISAPPEARED. APOLOGIES FOR THE DOUBLE POST

Check out the lenovo thinkpad e485 on their website. Pretty nice deals right now. The 485 should go for about $850 right now with ryzen 5, $950 with ryzen 7.

Keep an eye out for deals though, I've seen a few great ones recently. There was one that had it 40% off (when I bought mine, was $750!), And one that gave a virtually free upgrade to ryzen 7.

Screen and keyboard is great (mind that, I don't use the screen for anything crazy so I couldn't say if it's phenomenal), comes with SSD (small mind that, make sure to buy your own HDD seperate if you want one) and also has a 15" version (e585). Good build quality btw.

The laptop can also be customised, because thinkpad, so the ssd, processor etc etc can all be swapped.

Big downsides would be lack of fingerprint reader, only has the 1080p (non touch tmk) screen and lack of keyboard backlighting.

    TP;DR, give it a look.

    • Haha thanks for the laugh :'D all good my friend.

I'm mainly concerned about battery life and bulkiness/weight with the e485, so I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on that, but then again idk if I'm going to find a laptop with longer battery life than 4 hours casual use. Seems manufacturers don't make that a high priority. I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good laptop deal under $1000. Thanks for your advice!

  • The battery life for light (as in, libre calc light) usage seens pretty good. After about 3 1/2 houre mine was at 50 (ish) %.

Weights probably meh to some. I'm used to carrying plenty when it comes to weight with my bag so it doesn't matter much to me.

I'm probably sounding like a lenovo salesperson, lmao.

Something to consider btw, the e485 specifically is 14". Might be better suited for portable use.

Anyways, if your planning on grabbing the e485 make sure to grab it soon. The sales are growing worse and potentially ending soon. To bad you couldn't have grabbed the $750 deal, that was crazy value.
