if you can find another 10k you will have yourself an 80k Mercedes and a high yield investment

          Ozbargain much?

        • I just don't understand the negatives… High yield investments are stuff that give a large return?

Volvo XC60 T5 Momentum? If you get the 2019 it pretty much is the nicest SUV you can buy!

    • I initially wanted the XC60. I think it looks great.

BUT I kept being reminded by the Missus that we are really buying a Geely, I stopped coveting Volvos.

      • I would still prefer a Volvo over a Geely anyday!

    • Oh yeah, Volvo's new range of SUVs (and sedans…?) have actually been pretty good. Let's hope its Geely ownership continues to be good for its brand.

Even the head of Volvo design have convinced themselves that China made is better than Euro made.

        • I was going to say - that's obviously what the current head of Volvo design would say, as opposed to an ex-Volvo designer… but

There's less automation at Chinese plants, which allegedly allows for tighter tolerances.

This has basically been proven true by Tesla. I love how even the typos rail against this counter-intuitive conclusion:

However, Motor1.com's chance to drive Chinese-market models shows that this reputation is entirely true anymore.

Pretty sure there's a "not" that's supposed to be before "entirely" there haha.

          Addendum:

I think China's reputation for bad quality is… not unwarranted, but misunderstood. People move manufacturing to China because it's cheap. Those cheap companies also obviously cheap out on QA, which leads to lower quality - so it's not the country which matters, but the willingness to spend on QA and processes which do.

    • Great car, but for some unexplained reason the resale value is terrible

    Q5 TFSI 2.0 owner here.

I would never go an Audi again.

The car is beautiful and great to drive.

But it's very expensive to maintain, eg. I was quoted to have brake pads and discs replaced for all 4 wheels, it was in excess of $2,000. Audi 'don't do' machining of discs so you have to buy the whole kit. WTF.

The technology they had is nice, but within 2 years the Hyundais and Toyotas and Mazdas would have caught up with their own lane departure warnings, City Safe, Radar cruise control, 260 degree camera etc.

The badge got boring within 4 weeks.

    • love your honesty! btw. how is the surf atm?

    • You realise you don't have to go to Audi for servicing and brakes? For ATE or textar pads and rotors all round, including labour, you'd be looking at around $1k. Noone machines rotors these days, they wear at the same rate as the pads.

    • caught up?maybe just Hyundai,or AUDM Japanese cars,JDM Japanese cars have been well equipped since the late 70s,my old 1981 Nissan Laurel had cruise control, rear seat radio control,my 2005 Nissan Elgrand had radar cruise control, proximity key, adaptive cornering headlights,360 camera,I was laughing when Audi commercial says they have adaptive cornering headlights.
and Mazda Cosmo was the first ever production car equipped with gps.

    • Feel Expensive? you are not ready for Audi yet.

    Alfa Romeo Stelvio

I know what the comments to this will be but just read the reviews. It really does put the Germans to shame to drive. They haven't sold many so you might get a deal. Would be closer to the $70K end of your budget. No chance you'd get a 2017 or 2018 model of the cars you've suggested for $50K. You'd be looking at $70K +

Otherwise, I'd say go for an XC60. I don't like the X3 or Q5 both are boring to look at and drive.

XC60 has a heap of safety stuff, looks good and has received excellent reviews.

In response to the other comment, it is still made in Sweeden

    • Alfa is great if you want all the electrics to fail, and it to be worth about tree fitty after 4 years.

  • I would prefer BMW as its RWD. But I think Audi wins in other departments.

If you want to buy in the A5/X3 category and please do check SKODA Kodiaq
The value for money you get is incredible. For a car just over $50K new - its unbeatable for a European car.

    • What are the drive away prices for the Petrol ones?

    • Well you beat me to posting that.

One of the best reviewers out there imo.

@abdalian , you can use the drive away calculator on each manufacturer’s website to get the actual figurers.

That site is UK based so keep that in mind.

Got the VW Tiguan RLine 2017 - $60k drive away for top end petrol 162TSI with pano roof (+ rubber mats, weathershield, etc).

    I do 7.9L/100km average with 70km (100 mins) daily commutes with elevation drop/gain 100m.

Great car - fast, safe, and versatile. Mrs would probably like the high seating position, 360deg reverse camera with birds eye view, auto parking, apple carplay/android auto. You would probably like the ability to overtake most cars (very fast acceleration) with adjustible suspension, active cruise control with start/stop (slow traffic = no hassles) and ability to lay flat front passenger seat (and rear seats, of course) and fixed scheduled service pricing (still a rip off though when compared to lexus).

List goes on, but most other suv would have the things mentioned/not mentioned implmented in one way or another, just depends if you want to spend more $$ to have it all in one car.

If you like “small” suv, appreciate ergonomics/functionality and dont want to pay extra $$ for audi/bmw/merc/lexus, in my eyes/experience, it is an unbeatable all rounder for the $.

Only other suv worth considering is the 7 seater version. Hehe

  • Lexus NX or RX

OP wants Q5 and X3,Prado is not in the same category.

      • It’s true that they aren’t in the same category. However, op is looking for a q5, x3 or any other suv using petrol/diesel with features and space. Lc150 ticks all of that and more. It’s also made in Japan which is more reliable than anything coming Europe.

For that sort of money you could build an awesome 80 series Landcruiser.

  • I have had a GLC since they first came out nearly 3 years ago and I love it.

  • For my money, it's an XC60 or Tiguan.

If you needed more room, CX9 or Sante Fe.

We were in a similar situation few months ago and we read almost every car article and watched heaps of youtube videos.

Budget $45-$55k for a 3yo car, Family of 3 and we are after good fuel efficiency, safety features and good resale value as we'll probably keep it for max 4years. In this category, there's only the NX, XC60, Q5, X3 and GLC250.

GLC250 - https://www.caradvice.com.au/399255/mercedes-benz-glc-v-bmw-… this car seems to be the winner in a few review articles but there's not a lot of 2nd hand ones for sale as it is very new and out of our price range

XC60 - we're not happy with the size of the backdoor as it doesn't seem to open wide enough to give us room to put bub in the car seat. didn't bother test driving.

NX300h - drive was terrible as it was a hybrid car. Slow pick up and no power. lexus has the cheapest maintenance costs and we were very impressed by the interior and car has lots of features. Deliberated overnight and we were willing to sacrifice the drive for lower maintenance costs and beautiful interior but car was sold the next day when we rang to put our offer in.

Q5 - well priced, drives much better than the NX300h, lots of features. Dealer had 12 Q5 in various colours and there was a hertz sticker on it. We weren't blown away and was concerned with the resale value and how long it might take to sell. It's been a few months and they are still there and dealer currently has 27 2015/2016 Q5 for sale.

X3 - worried about high maintenance cost but things changed when we saw the M Sport model. Needless to say we bought it. It's been a few months and we still love it. Love the drive, has the power, good sized cabin and comfortable interior. We're nervous about the maintenance and hopefully there won't be any issues over the next 3 years. We also feel judged when we drive to HJ for $1 chips and Maccas for 24pc nuggets!

    • We also feel judged when we drive to HJ for $1 chips and Maccas for 24pc nuggets!

      It's an X3 not an X6 lol ..

  • +2

I've had a X5 for almost 3 years and before that an X3 for 2 years (second hand and about 20km) - My first expensive car and BMW. The X3 was awesome and I had no regrets.

  • I was in the same situation as you are 2 weeks ago.
Purchased Lexus NX300h (hybrid) Sports Luxury, why? :

    • Sit in one, to feel the immediate quality difference from a Q5-BMW etc. Lexus make the best seats in the business. The interior is very nice and snug.

    • Doing 60km returns daily from work in Sydney CBD. Fuel consumption 5.8/100 (l/100kms). Saving 45% exact from my mazda cx-5

    • All the bells & whistles especially safety features.

    • Put it in 'Sports mode' to see the difference in the pick up. Its no sports car , no SUV in this price range is. BUT, you will be surprised to see the amazing pick up, trust me, drive one and you will the differentiate comments here who drove one v/s who are only advising

    • People say it's based on RAV4 but read details its nearly 2ton car and Lexus claimed its 90% different than RAV4 with all parts used and proved it to the buyers in US.

    • Lexus Reliability. Dude there's a reason why LEXUS are one of the highest in reliability.

What i dont like in NX:-

    • I am no fan of it's infotainment system , but no car is 100% , and this is one small issue I can live with, compared to the advantages.
