Been looking out for Breville BES870 deal and found this new piece currently discounted at Myer. Not as many reviews yet but majority of them are positive.

Went to Sunbeam store on Sunday and even the store clerk has got no idea how good this machine compares to other models. Store clerk did mention the EM4300 is quite good. EM4300 is also one of the top picks from Choice.

Anyone keen to share some experiences with this machine?

Don’t forget Cashrewards/discounted gift cards if buy online from myer’s site.

  • Can't find solid evidence but I'd say the Breville BES870 and this Sunbeam are basically the same machine… just with cosmetic differences. They're probably even made/assembled side by side in the same factories. Personally I like the look of the Breville with its pretty little gauge but this does look 'cleaner'.

    • Noob question, what does the gauge actually do? Doesn’t the machine hold pressure automatically!

      • +1

Just a convenience thing really and although they can't be 100% relied on I did find it very handy to see what pressures the machine was dealing with when I first started. Not sure what the Sunbeam has but the Breville allows you to modify the coarseness and quantity of grinds and every brand of beans grinds up and tampers differently which then results in different pressures which leads to a good or a bad extraction and therefore a good or bad final product. I found it very handy actually but I also know it's non-essential in the scheme of things.

        • Thank you. According to Sunbeam there are 30 different settings for the grinder. Not sure where to adjust though. I can’t see a dial anywhere. Might be on the top of something.

        • +1

@allenhori: Yeah, it looks like you twist the bean hopper to adjust the coarseness on the Sunbeam. $475 is a really good price but after using the Breville and really enjoying all its features & ultimate adjustability I'd personally wait for another sale on a BES870 and jump on one of those instead. Great machines!

    • But…as per post below:

"This is still a single thermoblock machine. It does not have a boiler like the breville 870"

So not really the same machine?

      • … but as per a post below that it seems they're both in fact Thermoblock machines anyway :) Who knows!?! I'd love to get teardown pics of both to prove it but can't seem to find any.

        • +1

          Hmm, confusing!

Still, always educating reading the comments on deals like this.

        • @mr626: Yep, one of the massive benefits of the OzBargain community! Gimme a tic, I may have found a service manual diagram on both machines inc. exploded parts diagrams. More soon…

EDIT: Sorry, I can find loads of info on the Breville but next to nothing on the Sunbeam. Looks like this will remain a mystery!

  • Great price, although I've been reliably informed that the grinder on these things doesn't allow the fine controls one needs for a really good cup of coffee. Best to go for the Dual Boiler and the Smart Grinder (circa $880 together) if you are really serious about your coffee.

Just had a look on the website. This is still a single thermoblock machine. It does not have a boiler like the breville 870. So the breville is already the better machine from that point. Temperature regulation won't be good with thermoblock and the steam power will not be as strong or dry.

  • Hmmm, this is really tempting. We are looking to graduate from our old Aldi pod machine, sounds like something like this would be a great next step up?

Could also get the Breville 870 for about $100 more (using same Plus deal / coupon)

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Breville-BES870BSS-the-Barista-E…

    Worth the extra $100 ?

    • The breville is worth it. Read the comment above, thermoblock machines suck in comparison.

Edit: I just had a bit of a read and it looks like the 870 uses a thermoblock too… doh!

      • +1

I just checked and you are correct!! I always thought the 870 was a single boiler and then the 920 was the double. Really worth getting a boiler machine over thermoblock

    • I’m convinced by the comments above a will patiently wait for a nice deal for BES870.

      • Costco had the BES870 at $580 couple of weeks back

        • The link I posted is about $582 using the same ebay plus coupon as the original sunbeam deal. Certainly not the cheapest that the Breville has been, but still an ok deal I think.

        • Pretty sure someone will do better than $580 soon. But at least costco’s never fuzz about warranty as long as their offer is not abused.

Fingers crossed eBay has another massive discount sale for its birthday.
