As an Indian, I can confirm that Corssways is better than all the others that have been coming up lately. Best you try their Halwa (Indian dessert)

I'm assuming you've not tried Saravana Bhavan, then?

If you ever go to Launceston, go eat at "Pickled Evenings". Best Indian food I've ever eaten in Australia. :-)

      • Saravana Bhavan

        How much for the buffet?

        • I don't think they offer a buffet. You could have what's known as a "full meal", which is a traditional South Indian meal comprising of rice, sambhar, one or two poriyal (a vegetable accompaniment), may be a koottu, rasam, mor (buttermilk), appalam (papadam), pickle, and may be a sweet. Expect each item to be of small quantity, but altogether will fill your stomach and the quality is usually very good (could not obviously be compared to the Saravana Bhavans in Chennai, but it's as good as it gets in this part of the world).

Something like this, but more possibly more condensed, with a little less accompaniments: South Indian Full Meals

I think it's $20 or such if I remember it right. There must be cheaper versions with less accompaniments ($14 IIRC). I'm not crazy about eating Tamil full meals in restaurants, as I basically eat it most days for lunch (homemade). :-)

Groupon would be taking ~20% of that as advertising, so Crossways gets ~$6.32 and feeds 2 people an AYCE veg meal.
Wow, that's insane. I hope they're still able to continue offering Melbourne their meals.
I've been to Crossways and that was a long time ago, living so far from the city means there's not much opportunity to head into the CBD for these things. I was also a student then so got a cheaper meal, and the servers were friendly and polite.
The food is definitely worth more than what you pay.

    NO MEAT NO DEAL

    • So brave :)

    • Not everyone enjoys eating animals.

i think it’s run by the hari krishnas , who are vegetarians, so getting people to eat less meat aligns to their religious beliefs ….

i’m not vegetarian but have eaten their with friends who are.

as australia’s population grows and with climate change and possibly more droughts and our already limited water resources and demand from china meat will become more expensive and vegetables have a lower carbon foot print to grow and get to the consumer and make better use of water ……

beef and lamb is crazy expensive compared to 6 years ago and it won’t get cheaper.

get used to veges, it will form a larger part of diet unless you are wealthy in the future.

In reality, the rich Indians are more likely to be vegetarian. Two of the three largest Indian business communities are mostly vegetarian.

I understand your comment is about Australian population though.

  • We found this place is full of backpackers and people who want to talk to you…
Oh and they do takeaway but it's 50c, and if you buy a groupon it won't go over the x limit, and they don't take card under that amount..

    • people who want to talk to you…

That's great. At very few places you meet nice people these days. Most are concerned more about their table privacy than talking with others.

Agreed, it's nice to see people up for a chat and not just in their phones

        • So phone is not fine?
