Strawberries and pins...

So what are your thoughts on this damn thing?

I hardly every buy them but in consideration of the current issue I picked up two punetts'.
I like the idea of reversing anti social behaviour and hope in some small way it will support the growers and their employees.
I did notice many others were buying which I found heartening though I fully admit they were being sold at well below original pricing.
I mean, your going to have to be extra careful while consuming but there are ways around this as I'm sure you can imagine.

How do you think those who do/did this should be 'dealt' with?
Can you imagine why or who did this? And what about this 'copy cat' behaviour, which only serves to make convictions more difficult.

But I mean why??? for (expletive) sakes?

We'll leave that to authorities on how to deal with the situation

    • -7

Rubbish, they haven't a clue the self interested fools.

  • +16

Public flogging and rectal insertion of several pinapples.

  • +2

Hopefully confidence will come back quickly. At least ppl are helping by buying.

  • +2

Let's not discuss this so soon. Put a pin in it.

    • +4

I'm sorry but I have to say… what an odd comment.

      • +10

        POINTless

    • Pinned comment!

  • +3

I use toothpicks in my fruit.

    • +4

      Exactly.

This is just a pre-toothpicked fruit with retractable toothpick. Metal was the material of choice as it doesn't soak the juices.

  • +3

They're getting turned into jam last I heard.
Backpackers like to talk and won't be long before it gets pinned out.

  • also in apple & banana

    • Yes, I guess that is why some are saying there is possibly some 'copy cat' behaviour going on.
I guess the mental sickness of it is somewhat contagious to the less desirable souls amongst us.

    • +14

I bought a sewing kit earlier and found a strawberry inside.

  • +2

Media hype. Why people would stop buying is crazy!

  • whoever did it was a little prick who had to show what they really are about.

  • +2

I can't even buy them. The local supermarkets have removed them from sale. Really really poor form. I'm not afraid and I'd love to support the growers but didn't even get a chance.

    • Coles still have both the tasteless $1.80 a punnet and decent $4 a punnet ones as per normal.

  • +17

Also, making jokes about pins is pretty crap. Imagine you're a strawberry grower and your livelihood depends on selling your yearly crop and suddenly the market disappears through no fault of your own. You have staff to pay, overheads, loans, a family to support… Show some empathy ffs

    • Well said. I agree completely.
Thank you for adding your comments. :O)

    • +2

The best way to get deal with a situation is with laughter. It's a a great coping mechanism and very positive.

Just to add, can the PC brigade take a week off, I'll crowd fund it.

      • +2

I have a great idea! Create a forum post to create some moral outrage and seek validation via others agreeing with you. If anyone reacts in a different manner, then you can establish your moral superiority by going full retard taking the PC route.

      • +2

I love a good laugh, but not when it's dumping on people who are genuinely hurting in life. It's not like you are taking the piss about someone's sporting team losing, these are people's lives that are being damaged. I hate PC bs, but I'm really finding it hard to see how you can justify your point of view. Is it PC to care about other humans suffering? It's ok to to make fun of people losing money through the actions of some deranged or evil person? Perhaps take some time to reflect on what you think and type here before you do.

        • -4

Calm down love. I fell terrible for the farmers. The problem is some people get too emotional…..

        • +4

There's no way you're not a farmer. Come on, admit it. :-)

I don't see anyone here making fun of the farmers losing money, so you're allowing your moral outrage to cloud your perception. It's clear that this forum topic wasn't created to collect an array of thoughts and opinions. It was done to validate each others' like-minded feelings. It's nothing more than "Hey, I'm pissed off, who feels the same?" It shouldn't be surprising that some people realise this and choose not to play along.

@kahn: Wondering if perhaps an apology is due kahn? We should all stick to posting based on rules & opinions as prescribed by your good self… yes/no? Even your first comment (currently with 3 negs') seems to have you dictating that 'we should not discuss this too soon'. Would you like all to consult you about our timing… topics, dispositions… etc?

Your comments seem far more about you being a grievance (argument) looking for a cause (which doesn't bother me one iota - you have to live with yourself 24/7). Perhaps OB has nominated you as one to provide guidelines and directions to others? Cheers for doing your best to not only make light of others comments, but for derailing the thread as well. You must be fun at parties.

          Your comment directed at tassie'…

'you're allowing your moral outrage to cloud your perception' ??? seriously?

        • +2

          @Chris Farley:
Hmm, it looks like my joke needs explaining. It's actually got 6 negs, but 3 people got the joke.

“Put a pin in it” is a slang term that means to “hold onto that thought/idea and we'll come back to it later”. One might assume that it comes from thumb-tacking an idea to a bulletin board, but in fact, it comes from a WWII reference to a hand grenade - “putting a pin in it” so you can save it for later!

        • -1

          "I hate PC bs, but"

          virtue signalling ensues…..

  • +2

Hopefully no farmers pull the pin over this.

    • +3

The whole thing has blown up, berry sad.

      • +3

All these awful punnets are in bad taste.

        • I know, that's the last straw. The whole thing has gone bananas.

  • +1

I'm torn over this. Local grocer is seeking at 69c a punnet. Clearly not a great profit for the farmers. That said, cheap strawberries that can be frozen … I bought 9 punnets the other day.

  • +2

My whole take on this is are you going to let the gronks win? As Ozbargainers, we should be buying the crap out of these cheap strawberries and making jam, cheesecake, cordial, toppings and using our mighty market power to ensure we have a steady supply of fresh affordable strawberries in the future. They had Melamine in baby formula and there was less of a backlash.

    Recipe:
    Make Macdonalds Style Strawberry Topping

    • Take a bunch of strawberries and chop them up, put them into a big jar, like a Mocconna jar.
    • Cover the strawberries in sugar, about the same amount as you have chopped strawberries.
    • Chuck a Vanilla bean husk in if you use them (Optional).
    • Put jar in fridge. (Make sure lid is on firmly)
    • Shake jar everytime you open fridge.
    • Use from next day onwwards. Sticky chunky strawberry topping.

I hardly every buy them but in consideration of the current issue I picked up two punetts'

    THose are weak numbers, man.

    I bought 50. No joke.

    • FIGJAM?!

    • Same story here Smuggler,

the missus and I bought 14 250g punnets yesterday from our local for a fraction of the cost than usual. There's a strawberry farm about an hours drive from Cairns and they are now open 7 days instead of the usual 2 because Coles and Woolworths won't buy their produce.

  • -5

    "I bought 50. No joke."

50 strawberries? Didn't realise they were selling them individually now.

  • I'm supporting watermelon growers until strawberries are safe again.

    • +3

Careful, I once found a machete in a watermelon.

      • +3

I once found a whole bottle of vodka in a watermelon! Can you imagine? By the time I finished it and realised, I was so angry, I couldn't walk straight or even stand up! Terrible…

  • +1

I want to buy them, but the shops have to purchase higher priced strawberry's now, Not willing to pay 12.00 a kilo for strawberry's!

  • Man in SA was charged for making false reports about pins in strawberrys.
PM went on TV and launched a manhunt….im still eating my strawberrys whole

  • +2

It's a terrible situation. But really, just cut the fruit up more than you usually would. If you find one contaminated then return to where you bought or report to police. I'm not sure why it's so hard to follow? I think the "hype" around the whole situation has made things worse than it was to start with. Sometimes I think the media has a lot to answer for!

I personally don't buy strawberries anymore because most are being grown too big which seems to compromise on the flavour of the strawberry.

  • I don't normally buy them either but have bought 4 punnets in the last 2 weeks! to be honest once you have tasted Strawberries in Norway and Sweden etc the local ones seem pretty tasteless in comparison.

    • +1

I have to agree with that, I emailed a complaint to a grower (before the current crisis) because the fruit didn't taste like strawberries. No reply then, maybe I should try again.

  • +2

Its good to see you can almost collapse an industry, cost taxpayers millions in funding to help farmers suffering from it, actively try to cause people physical harm or death and cause people to copy you. And in the highly unlikely chance you get caught the worst Australia wants to give you is 15 years in prison which will probably get dropped by 10 years once you tell the courts your daddy beat you and your mommy didn't love you.

God forbid they realize you could put needles in ANY food you wanted. Hell why even stop at needles, bits of glass, razor blades, button batteries would work just as well. I mean i know this country was founded by criminals but that amount of time is a joke compared to the amount of damage you can do.

  • +1

I feel terrible for farmers, and honestly, the "don't buy strawberries" really hit them hard. So I'm totally buying strawberries every time I go to Coles. just need to cut them and be cautious but that's it.

  • If this story interests you I strongly recommend reading about the Monster with 21 faces case

  • Another example of the media blowing something completely out of proportion with no concern for how it might effect others.

Seriously, people sticking foreign objects into food is about as (profanity)' dumb a thing someone can do but I am more worried about contracting the flu and dying from complications than eating a strawberry with a pin in it.

But I guess if people need another excuse to not eat their fruits and veges this is a pretty convenient one.

  • +1

Just fken cut them before you eat them.

    They are better cut.

  • +1

Has anyone considered that the saboteurs could simply up their game by introducing poison instead of needles? "Just cut them up" doesn't cut it. These people need to be found and metaphorically slammed into the ground.

    • I thought the same thing but didn't want to post it publicly. Now that you've let the cat out of the bag I'll have to hire a taster to try all of my food before I do

      • +1

Unfortunately it's not secret knowledge, or something that's never been done before. Anyone that's gone to the trouble of using needles and contaminated multiple brands of strawberries in the first place would have had other thoughts.

Perhaps the motivation is simply disruption and they don't actually want to kill people. Maybe they don't want to risk being convicted of multiple murders. Who knows. Regardless this has exposed a vulnerability in our fruit industries that is unfortunately now going to need to be addressed.

I'm old enough to remember tamper proof packaging for panadol after some idiot was contaminating that in some kind of misguided protest.

  • Queensland's strawberry industry reacts to needle contamination charges being dropped

Ah, 2018 the good old days. Before COVID, before bush fires.
