Sony WH-1000XM3: How Long until They Are < $400?

Sony's update to the XM2 is coming out soon (in a few days) and should retail for ~$500. Never owned a premium pair of NC headphones before, but historically, how long until we begin seeing deals for these headphones (Bose, Sony etc) in the $350 - $380 range? Would around Christmas this year be unrealistic?

Also, the XM3s have been getting great reviews but would you still get the Bose QC35 IIs if they were ~$300 since they regularly go for below $350? Just wondering if I should get the QC35s now or wait for the Sony's to drop in price.

How Long until They Are < $400

The time will depend on the distance you travel and at what speed.

Mathnerd will come along and confirm my formula shortly.

    • I wasn't asking for a wild prediction. historically/based on past experiences with other premium NC headphone models

Historically, the rate of reduction of RRP is an observable phenomenon with a consistent time based reduction but it is fairly unpredictable the rate of reduction to time.

I am proposing an inverse tangent model to plot the reduction against RRP as a value of time.

        • I agree with your proposal. Provide me with the formula, and I'll chuck it into Mathematica to create a graph out of it.

  • It's not a smartphone.

I don't think historical stats will matter. Some headphones sell for 5 years+ with little change in price.

    • Fair enough, but they are similar in that a new iteration usually comes out every year. Unless innovation completely stops, I think the price trends should be similar

I would say prices will stay above $400 until Christmas as cost price is higher compared to the M2. But if Bose comes out with a QCIII (as rumoured), then we may see sub $380 to compete.

    • Alreadya FF buyer at 3s.

Low 3s by Xmas if your lucky. Now you just have to wait. By the way it took at least 6 to 8 months before the low of $269 for Xm2. At some point you just have to say buy. Then as soon as you buy it, the next week it will be cheaper again or the new model of compeditors model comes out that is better. Just try them on. You may only like the QCs and they have stayed about the same price for a few years around $350 IMO.

  • The issue now is Bose have not announced a product that can compete, so XM3 is still King of the hill (i have one now). The way things are going it seems Sony is set to release 1 new headset a year usually during iFA. You might get under 300 6 to 8 months in, but 3 months later its instantly obsolete due to the new model (like how XM2 and XM3 are now).

    • Do you have the Bose as well?

      How do they compare?

      • Interested to know this as well. Bose is the king of comfort and the XM2 had comfort issues. I wonder if the XM3 are a major improvement in that category

        • QC35 are now 35% off in Qantas and I am not sure… many reviews mentioned sound and NC is better with Sony, but calls quality is crap…

    • The XM4 and XM5 in a few years time will be unbeatable. With the refinements so far the Sonys will be unbeatable NC headphones. Just now needs multi use Bluetooth connections. More blue LEDs. Real gold version. If they can make the cans even more low pro they will be perfect.

Just wait for an Ebay %20 off sale.

  • Next year when the xm4 comes out.

Hey guys was wondering if it's better to buy this now or wait until xm5 comes out. Also when will price drop.

    Ahhhh the cycle of life

I've got a pair of XM2's and only have issues with comfort after several hours of wearing them with my glasses that have rather thick arms. Whenever worn without glasses, I tend to not have any issues (and that's with a big head). The noise cancelling is great, blocking out most "consistent sounds" and doing a good enough job of "inconsistent sounds", and I personally don't see much benefit in trying to completely block out the latter, since it helps to hear if someone is trying to talk to you. USB-C would be nice since I have other devices that use it, but apart from that point (which may actually be a negative for those that are heavily Micro-B dependent) I have no temptation to upgrade.

If you can get your hands on a discounted pair of XM2's, then definitely go for it from a value proposition and save the difference towards upgrading to the XM4's next year (or XM5's beyond).

  • Im getting 77.6 days? can anyone confirm?

    • So in your experience, it took about 77 days for a similar NC in the same price range to drop to below $400? Appreciate the response. Was it the XM2s by any chance?

  • $397 $376 with ebay discount or price matching. $269.95 by March is my prediction from previous trend.
