Do You Charge People to Piggyback off Your Netflix and/or Spotify

Hi Ozb'ners,

I wanted to hear what people have to say about this topic.

We have all heard of people saying I don't pay for Netflix/spotify because my so and so friend or sibling pays - but I wonder how many people charge their close friends/siblings for this.

I personally pay a friend to use their Netflix and their Spotify to ensure everyone using it pays the same amount but that's just me.

Keen to hear!

  • how many simultaneous logins/devices are allowed ? unlimited ?

I don't have Netflix, but with Spotify only 1 device can play at any time.

Someone negged Scotty? I feel a boot incoming.

Technically, he's not wrong - each login can only be used one at a time, but a plan can be made up of six logins.

Maybe people don't like the fact that I don't have Netflix. Just don't have time to watch it :(

          Technically, he's not wrong

Well. Technically I was wrong as each Premium account (or part of the Premium for Family) can have up to 3 devices for "Offline Listening" so you can technically download the songs on multiple devices, go off-line and then having them playing simultaneously.

        Have a down-vote

    • Depending on the plan: 1, 2 or 4. - source.

I have the plan for 2, and give out to both parents (mainly for when the babysit). It's unlikely we'll all be using at the same time, but if we do, I'll upgrade to the 4 banger.

To answer OP, it depends on how friends/family use it.
If they're playing netflix 24/7, then they'll be using a seat and charges may apply (probably not though, as I'd still be paying for it whether they use it or not, and for the case of $2p/m / $4 for 2 seats..).
If it's an occasional movie / episode, no charges (but need to be aware of the seat limitation).

Regarding passwords, you should be using randomised passwords and not use them anywhere else!

2, or 4 for Netflix, depending on plan

  • Depends on how well I know them and how close we are. Close friends I probably bum enough stuff off them normally it works out and we don't track those really. Anyone else… I don't let them use my accounts. A few bucks isn't worth the trouble.

There is one other person who uses my account. I've tried to get them to pay but they refuse. Wives are difficult sometimes.

kids are worse. bunch of freeloaders.

      • not all of them, my son supplies a login for his mother, sister and brother

    • +1

She probably already does pay in myriad ways…

      • +1

Like good wives do! Am I right guys?

  • I am on the poverty Netflix plan that I share with my sister and a friend. I do not charge them for it.
Only 1 of us can use it at a time.

I let me family and friends use my Netflix.

I change the password once in a while to remind them how lucky they are to have me.

    • I love it

    • In reality they hate you when they have to ask for the new password

I can think of a website that has more stuff than Netflix and is free

    • Was it terrarium?
      RIP terrarium

Netflix was defo meant for sharing, its got profiles baked right in to the logon process.

Spotify… not unless you have a family sharing plan, in which case it becomes another account.

Pro tip: you can share youtube premium subscriptions by creating subprofiles in youtube. I have one for the baby's ipad, one for the apple tv, one for other devices, etc - this way everyone gets the benefits of premium without separate accounts. Plus, each accounts fav, watch history is separately maintained - so no baby rhymes in my main account.

Damn. I wish I worked this out a while ago.

I've handed my netflix account details out to 5 people. Im paying for it already and I barely use it, so might as well let others benefit from it.

The thought of charging them for use has never even crossed my mind. It's about a cup of coffee each month and even if they transferred it to my account, I wouldn't even notice!

  • No. But I had my sister set-up a family spotify account, which we all contribute to. Everyone should do this, its a great deal. I think you get 6 users.

  • we go halves with a friend on netflix

  • I have family Spotify already so family are logged into it.

Already have the top Netflix plan for 4K so everyone's logged into that too.

It doesn't cost me any extra to have them on there so I don't charge anything. I would probably never share anything with friends though

The family go thirds in the premium plan (3 households). We all buy a $50 gift card and put that one (so $150) and when it runs out again, we all buy another one.

Works out cheaper for everyone than the basic and we all get the HD streaming etc.

    win/win

I pay for Stan and my friend pays for Netflix, and we both share accounts.

    • +2

This sounds like the best way to do things. So no one has to give anyone money

  • I had my Netflix shared with 3 people at one stage. I never asked for money but I changed my password and logged them out of my account and now only my mum has the details to my account. At one stage I did a swap though. My friend had stan and I had Netflix so it worked out well.

The second you do any of these things to circumvent the usage rights, you may as well go straight to torrents because it’s effectively the same thing legally speaking.

I share my Netflix (2 screen) account with 3 other people. I share my Foxtel Go account with 4 other people. I even let a friend set up their Fetch box under my account (multi-room) so they get to see all my channels.
    Sharing is caring.

Just got to be careful with the Fetch box as if they buy movies, add packs etc. then I will be charged but I trust that they won't do it.

    I don't like this thread.

Currently sponging off my dad's Netflix and my father-in-law's Foxtel Go.

  • +1

    I don’t like it either.

    Can we close it?

This stuff shouldn’t be advertised imo.

  • I have US and AU top level accounts, US account is shared to my relatives in California (Mum, Dad, sisters, nephew and nieces) which they don't pay for.

    Where’s the option “I am a piggybacker”?

I just don’t watch it enough to justify paying for it myself.

  • Not entirely relevant but I share steam and origin accounts with good friends who won't hack and get me banned. Occasionally they will do the same for me when I want to try out a new game. No money involved.

    • Why don't you set up family sharing instead? That way they can try out your games and vice versa (as long as you're not currently playing them), and I don't think there's a risk of you getting banned by something they've done in game.

      • Because I am a simpleton who only learned what that was a week ago :( thanks for the reminder.

  • i upgraded my account from 2 screens to 4 screens so that 2 friends could get a good deal. i still pay the most for the 2nd screen but save like $1 or something

  • No no no… I give out the password for let's say Netflix and they give me their password for another service such as Stan. Trust is very important so it's just family and really close friends.

  • Netflix I have used Netflix in the past and I shared with my friend. We watched for
2 months and stopped afterwards. Sign up again after 2 or 3 months as we will have quite a lot to watch(new movies will. Be added) . Rather than watching old movies.

Spotify I never pay for it. I just don't mind listening to ads

  • I share with one person on here and family.

Just asked for small charity one time and that's it no ongoing cost since I got a good price on the Netflix deal credit.

Might not top up though since I don't use it and mainly just for family right now but not sure if they use it.

    • Where did you get those credits? I bought some a couple years back here on OZB forum and it just ran out. Can't find it anywhere now :(

      • forgot who but someone on ozbargain was selling some accounts/credits at like 50-70% off.. basically just bought an account and changed the email address so it might have been a shady dealing.

i think i paid something like $70 for $200 worth or something cant remember now but it was not from a website or ebay/gumtree/facebook if you were asking was from ozbargain community

  • Need a fourth option “I piggyback off my family and they don’t charge me”. Thanks Mum and Dad! :D

  • Im on big plan for netflix. My daughter in London uses it my mum and other daughter in NZ are on it to. I dont worry for money from them.

  • My daughter logs in with my ex-wife's account when she's at my place and conveniently forgets to logout. I find that quite satisfying. :-)

  • I would love love, love a piggy back ride in stan -ville.
So to anyone with a stan account, please pm me. Im happy to pay with cash up front or netflix details?
