What Are The Requirements for Students Entering into a Mobile Phone Contract?

So I was wondering what the requirements are for a student (over 18, in university) to enter into a mobile phone contract with a telco like Optus. Do you need to prove you have sufficient income to pay off the phone? What kind of information is necessary to enter the contract? Things like that. Thanks in advance!

just bring your ID & banking for direct debit

    enjoy your iphone xs max

    • Direct debit … Are you insane?

      • Or, you can pay extra $2.20 for non-direct debit fee billed to your account every month

        your choice

why get yourself into 24 months prison agreement just for a phone?
you can get $300 xiaomi, and $15/month kogan when they are on special….

    WIW

    world is weird…

    • apparently $300 xiaomi != iphone xs max
And iphone also predict you wealth!

      • Lol. That's why journalists should stay away from statistics.

        • They had a study that found out rich people buy the most expensive phones.

News is basically for braindead people to read right?

          • @Diji1: Rich people buy the most expensive phones.

Prediction is almost synonymous with forecast.

Prediction of wealth is hardly synonymous with purchasing habits.

Makes perfect sense. I predict that if you have a new iPhone XS Max, your wealth is now $2k less.

That wouldn't be a prediction. It would be an assumption. You assumed the subject bought the phone as opposed to receiving it or obtaining it via other means.

          I think I'm hungry.

    • Second this, but with buying an iPhone on student pricing/discounted jbhifi gift cards.

    • lol, I am the guy with the Xiaomi on Kogan….. It's great for me personally :)

  • Generally just ID, bank details. They do a very cursory credit check so as long as you have some kind of income and haven't been bankrupt, you should be fine.

I got a phone on contract as soon as I turned 18, with no income. If you don’t pay it, it goes on your credit record and you won’t be able to get a mortgage. Usually putting together the money and buying it straight up is a far better idea.

    • Not to mention cheaper

You don't need to prove you have sufficient funds but if you don't pay, don't expect the telco to be nice about it. They'll just black mark your permanent credit history.

If you are asking "Can I afford this". Then you can't.

  • i got a samsung galaxy on contract when i was at uni with little income. somehow talked my way into getting the first 6 (or was it 9?) months free. even with that discount, and getting a real job soon after, paying some expensive contract for an old phone 2 years later was annoying

never been on contract since. life is better

  • 100 points of ID, usually your Driver's License which can include L's/P's (or Passport with another official document that proves your address, e.g bank statement, bill etc), as well as one of a Medicare card, Tertiary ID, or Credit Card (there are a few other options, some of which are only worth 20 points so you'd need more than one, but it depends on the Telco).

This all changes if you're an International Student, however.
