This product is part of the "End of September" Mobile Accessories 20% off sale that we posted yesterday but stock wasn't received in the warehouse until this morning so we are re-posting for those who are interested.

As many Macbook users(including myself) experienced when Apple decided to adopt USB Type C standard to charge its latest MacBooks, the loss of Apple's proprietary MagSafe feature was not only emotional but also caused a bit of inconvenience in the daily workflow, so we have been searching for a quality replacement cable that features a similar mechanism. As it turns out, only 2 "reasonably reputable" manufacturers in China have launched products for this application, one is Baseus, the other is LLano.

We got samples for both the Baseus(link to the originalKickstarter project), and the LLano(link to Joybuy with user reviews) to compare and test. They have different pin designs for the magnetic interfaces and through our testing LLano version is easier to use and have better build quality overall, hence we contacted the manufacturer and imported a few boxes into Australia.

Some specs below:

Brand LLano
Model LJN-SJX110
Connector USB TypeC(Male) to USB Type C(Male)
Length 2m
Output max 20V4.35A
Weight 36g (net)
Package Hard cardboard tube

Please do note that through our testing we found that due to the nature of magnetic interface and high power output, the metal connector piece could become heated so be cautious when plug/unplug. This is Gen 1 of the product and LLano is currently looking to refine the design and obtain USB-IF certification for the next generation, so any user feedback will be highly appreciated.

  • kick start comments seems a fair few failed after a few months, and the mention of it getting to hot to touch in the description, I think I'll pass

    • Hi Trantor

The Kickstarter one is designed and manufactured by Baseus from which we also have some products in our catalog. LLano, despite being a smaller brand comparing to Baseus, has been manufacturing quality laptop AC adapters and accessories.

Through our testing, the LLano cable is very well made and performs much more stable over extended charging sessions. But it does get hot at the metal piece, so we would unplug it by holding the nylon braided cable instead.

      Hope this helps

      • Comes with a warranty then? Nothing is listed

  • Will it work with phones with usb-c? Can I put that adspter into say S8 and use it for charging?

    • Hi anothervic

Yes of course it will work with phones with USB-C.
However what I find from using it myself there are a few things:

      • You could lose the small detachable bit that goes into the phone if you switch between this cable and other normal cables
      • This is a fairly long cable (2m) so could get in the way when you are charging
      • The magnets are not super strong (strong enough to secure to the laptops as they stay stationary on the desk), however if you use your phone while charging, the connection might not be very stable

There are other cheaper magnetic detachable cables on the market available that are not designed for carrying high current, I find the straight connector versions are better than angled ones (this one) for mobile phones.

      Cheers
      MM

      • Good points, thanks.

  • How do I hate the USB-C ports to charge my MacBook … MagSafe was so easy and just perfect to use.

I use the ELECJET cable ( https://elecjet.com/products/elecjet-magnetic-usb-c-charger-… ) as a replacement. So far works very well - you just need to make sure that the plug sits firm in the port! It has different PINs than the offer here but is also reversible. The cable is US$20 with one tip or US$24 with 2 tips … free shipping to Australia! Just as an alternative.

Also the link to Joybuy in the post is only around AU$16.60 shipped - but it will take a while.

    • Hey mini_wombat

Thanks for the insights with using these "MagSafe" Type C cables! Yes the Joybuy one comes to around $17 including shipping but it states 12 days to ship and another 30-40 days estimate delivery time.

I'm actually very intrigued about the performance of the 6 pin design comparing to the 5pin(2+3) on Baseus, and straight 5pin on LLano. How long have you had the ELECJET one and if you've got a chance to measure 1) power output, 2) temperature of the metal tip after 1hr?

      Regards
      MM

I use it for around 1.5 months without issues. Connects easy and so far I didn't feel any temperature issues (I will now pay attention as you mentioned it). No idea about the power output - I use it with the original Apple charger and did not feel any difference in charging speed compared to the normal USB-c cable.

          Interesting, good to know!

My search begins, on the mission to find the manufacturer of the 6 pin version.
