West Coast’s Epic Grand Final Win. Waste of a Grand Final? Best out of Three? Comments?

CONGRATS TO WEST COAST FOR A HEART STOPPING WIN!

AFL grand final 2018: Re-live the last three minutes of West Coast’s epic grand final win.
https://thewest.com.au/sport/west-coast-eagles/afl-grand-fin…

Waste of a grand final? All year West Coast have copped flack for not being the real deal. Hopefully there is not doubt now … or is there? Maybe a best of three? Love to hear your comments! They won no doubt, so did they deserve to win?

*** Edit: Best of three was sarcasm, whenever a non-Victorian club win the flag I see denial like the quote from Melbourne based football journalist Tony Jones, who says a grand final spot would be “wasted” on the Eagles. In effect saying that wasn’t the real Grand Final lets now have a Victorian team that counts win the GF.

The was one of the closest finals of recent times. That's what you hope for. If it weren't for the fact that Collingwood are one of the most hated sides and then we have a interstate team in the final I'm glad WC won. could have gone either way. At least a work on Monday it will be bearable as we have a lot of Collingwood supporters.

    • Yeah, hate how after the finals all the closest fans come out and put posters, stickers and that on their house/car/desk

      • closest

        Closet fan you mean…

  • Yay! Football is over for another year. Just need the NRL to wrap up and it’s all football free radio for the next few months. :D

Yet you bothered to take the time to post in a football thread.

Didn’t make my neg quota this week and I know they are easy to collect on football, Apple or PS4 threads. :D

Its not all that bad.. 6neg .. 4+.

Best of 3 would be the dumbest idea ever. 3 weeks for the final to be decided? Please.

    • +1

If not best of 3, what about grand finals held at the home teams ground? I know we cant do anything about it for the next ~40 years but after?

      • Why? The AFL is not the NFL or NBA or some other major EU league. I’m a big fan but to be honest it’s a quaint little comp with funny rules and traditions.

The stats show that interstate clubs have won a fair chunk of premierships at the MCG over the last 30 years, so the MCG is hardly a statistical disadvantage

        West Coast x 4
        Sydney x 2
        Brisbane x 3
        Adelaide x 2

This comes up every year and it’s a bit boring to be honest. MCG is the home of footy. Time to get over it.

The interstate teams get the home advantage for the first 3 weeks of the finals if they finish high enough on the ladder. It helps to get to the big game. Don’t forget that.

"MCG is the home of footy": …pretty sure MCG stands for Melbourne Cricket Ground. Realise that the AFL needs to make the dosh to stay viable and MCG is best for that, but you cant say that does not give a Victorian team a home ground advantage.

          • @MMM: Of course it gives Vic teams an advantage.

But I am simply stating the advantage is not big enough to deny WCE, SYD, BRIS, ADE 11 flags out of 30 which is a pretty good strike rate considering they have been ~25% of the teams in the competition for most of that time.

        • It’s not that “quaint”, it’s one of the most popular sports in the world, have a look at where AFL places in all the lists here, it’s right up there:

            @bdubba: It's quaint enough ….

            • that we don't have an official score review system better than some blurry footage of a weird angle that shows not much.
            • that the 23 rounds are uneven. Some teams play each other twice, others once which is up to the "fixture committee" each year to decide.
            • that 3 umpires can umpire two games in the same round so very differently.
            • that 2 teams play each other on ANZAC day each year meaning some years they play a another game 4 days later.
            • that the umpires decide the best player for the year
            • and so on….

It really is a strange game. It's full of unfair biases and oddities and traditions. I still love it…. but on the world stage we really do have some quaint little traditions.

Frankly I am more concerned about my second above about 23 rounds, than where the GF is played.

@Skramit: Ahh yeah I see what you’re getting at. Completely agree it’s a lot less “professional” than some other sports and we don’t make a big deal about some of those points you’ve raised, but honestly that’s part of the reason I love it. Super regulated sport just isn’t Aussie to me, I like that we can be more laid back and just worry about having fun and putting on exciting games!

@bdubba: And having the grand final at the G is just part of it IMO

        • Agree also with most of the above, maybe every second or third year get states to vie for hosting could generate good revenue bit like the Olympics. Pretty sure Sydney, Adelaide, Brissie & Perth would build bigger to accommodate and brings a bit of equality to the game.

Why best of three..let's make best of 10..

    • what happens if they're both 5 5

        Pistol duel at dawn.

        • Could we make this the opening round and any survivors playoff?

  • Epic is such an overused word.

    • -1

      Epic is most underrated word

  • Yay, now the sports betting ads can transition to horse racing.

    k

  • thanks. last 3 minutes of the grand final is enough afl for me for the entire season.

  • I think the eastern states still fail to realise what a seriously talented team the eagles have always been. I wouldn't be surprised if this current team wins 3 or 4 premierships.
