Man that's an insane price for the R5.. such a great case.

  • Perfect timing. Been looking for a case for two weeks now and am still undecided of which to get. I'll definitely check these out. Thanks OP.

i did the same for months - then settled on the Fractal Meshify C - https://www.pccasegear.com/products/42387/fractal-design-mes…

Everything has RGB these days. And its a brillantly simple case to build in…..Big fan of fractal cases

      • If only they did Meshify for EATX boards :( Been a long time fan of Fractal cases, but was forced to look elsewhere for the last 2 chipsets.

      • I did a build in the Define R6 blackout a couple of months ago. It's probably the best case I've ever had.

  • +1

Maybe add Silverstone PT13B to the list - it's $89 when usually $129 (and rare as hen's teeth these days… people selling them on ebay for $150+)

    • Side note, any recommendations on a motherboard for this case?

      • +1

Looks for motherboard with CPU onboard, like these and these.

        • I was thinking the Asus prime h310t or the Asus h110t

          • +1

            @stickymoo: I can't find info about Asus Prime H310T.

The Asus H110T sounds good, it comes with DC power connector.

  • $32 delivery for me. Too bad would have been nice to get.

I recently completed a build on the Fractal Design Define Mini C (with no tempered glass) and it's got a very well thought out design with decent noise isolation. It does only have 2 bays for 3.5" drives but it has a very modern layout. Highly recommend it if you're after a smaller case.

The Tempered glass version won't isolate noise as well but it will show off your components (if that's what you want).

My main desktop is using a more recent design, the Meshify C which is great if you want both the subdued look, need Full ATX motherboard support, the glass side panel and also good airflow. The downside is that it costs $149, even though it's meant to be a pretty cheap case in the US.

    • I also use the meshify c :)

  • I just picked up a silverstone FT05 silver today. $129 clearance

mini C is so similar to my nzxt h400i but much cheaper

thank goodness the case sold out, was gonna spend $100 when I already have a perfectly functional case!

    • +2

      hahaha exactly my thoughts!

Clicked on the link and was watching the review drooling over this case (even though my current case is perfectly fine!), and then refreshed to see it out of stock.

Saved myself $100… and what a beautiful case. All the features you want, excellent build quality, and understated styling- not the usual in your face fancy attention grabbing gimmick crap on so many cases these days.

I hope it doesn't come back into stock. I don't want to buy it… but I will if it comes back ;). $100 is too good to pass up.

      • It was a clearance sale, doubt it'll come back. Your wallet is safe!

      • +1

had this happen too many times already hahaha, but it is so addicting getting those sweet sweet bargains!

    • I paid $189 for the same case a year ago.

    • I call it, "analysis to paralysis"— research until it's OOS- lol.

      ;)

  • I was reading and watching the review and after, I went to checkout and got a message… Your basket is empty. Dang! Took my luvin' sweet time and missed out.

Anywayz, I'm looking at the Silverstone Fortress FT04 now. Any thoughts on this case fellas? Thanks.

Damn r5 for $99 was a crazy price

  • the silverstone cases have free shipping also

  • WOW, just bought a case on the weekend, spewing!

  • I've had both fractal define xl r2 and a define mini in prior builds. Currently rocking the Phanteks Enthoo mATX. All fantastic cases, well worth the retail price, let alone these special prices.

I have the R5 white case. The front USB ports and 3.5mm jack were very tight. I got them to send me a replacement front kit. The replacement was still just as tight. :(

I use mini extension cables for the USB ports, which is unsightly. And I never use the front 3.5mm. There's a lot of EMI and noise when plugged into it anyway. The cable the connects to the sound card is poorly shielded, just like in most cases.

    • Yeah I can't believe how bad EMI still is these days… I rock a focusrite Scarlett now, USB external soundcard, get it out and away from the case haha

      • A but off topic but I have a quick question. I recently switched to the Massdrop+Cavalli Hybrid DAC/AMP and when my phone gets near my headphone cable while my microphone is active in an app (Discord etc) I get static come and go. My mic is connected to a Behringer UMC22 and the USB power is via a cable I got from MSY. Where do you think the static is coming from?

        • there's a lot of different variables at play here. I get a build up if my headphones at work even have their own cable coiled around itself on the desk. It could be the AMP reacting with the frequencies, old computer desk speakers used to do that, if you put your phone in front of them when getting a txt or something, you could hear the 3G signal.

My only thought is to try an EMI Magnetic Ferrite Ring Shield Cable Clip on the cables where they connect to each unit. Don't know how much good it'll do but you usually see them on equipment. I would have thought your UMC22 would have provided super clear audio like my Focusrite.

What headphones do you have? Are they maybe miss matched for the amp? (I don't know anything about that DAC/AMP you've got)

          • +1

@camshandez: Come to think of it my friend did braid my 10ft long cable for my headphones. It's the Fostex TH-X00 connected to the Hybrid tube dac/amp. I'll try it again with my old AKG 242HD's and see if I get that static to see if the braided cable is the issue.

    • So I just went back and tested the 3.5mm front port on my Meshify C and noted that it only outputs properly to headphone/earphone jacks with just the two strips. Anything with a third strip on the jack (microphone built in) sounds awful - like someone singing down an echoey cavernous well.

      • It has a separate 3.5mm for headphones and mic. The cable is sleeved, so I don't know how many strips it has. It's one cable though.

  • had the R5, loved it. definitely, a keeper case, upgrade alone the line (to water)
the evolve is not a good case for cooling, so keep that in mind, the tiny vents just sometimes really suffocate

but now i am rocking itx case with volume 7.2L, totally different league.

    • which case have you got?

  • +2

Damn, been sorta looking for an upgrade for my HAF 932 and this would've been perfect.

Oh well, the HAF will just have to soldier on

    • Haha same boat here. I keep looking to upgrade mine too, but I cannot find anything for the right price to replace it.

    • +2

It's a pretty mediocre case, Define Mini C is has a much more solid build.

The front of the Masterbox lite is perspex (a kind of plastic), so it's prone to static (dust will stick to it) and will pick up scratches over time, so it's not going to age well. Only the side is tempered glass but they obviously have to cut a few corners so the front is not glass.

      • Thanks :)

Fantastic price. I'm planning my next build with the R6 but I would have settled for R5 for that price if I was quick enough.

    • -1

I just looked at R6. It is the dream case I've always wanted. It's practically perfect. My only complaint is that the front door is either black or brushed aluminium and it doesn't look good with a white case.

Just pay the extra for it.

  • Shame the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv mATX is only available on sale in Anthracite Grey. I want the silver one.

Oh well, hoping Phanteks update it following the design improvements on the Enthoo Evolv X (better airflow).

  • the fractal design focus G mini is back up to $89 now :(
