$190.8 with the recent 10% off PayPal eBay vouchers.

      • +3

        nah that's cheating

      • can you do that? i thought eBay didn't let you use two voucher codes.

        • Yes you can

          • @Steptoe: I got a notice "You can only apply one voucher code to this purchase."

    • Seems obvious.

  • How reliable are these drives?

My Corsair 120Gb SSD is still going strong since 2011. Its my OS drive too so I would expect this last just as long, if not longer!

The Crucial has an endurance rating of 360TB written, whereas a (similarly priced) Samsung Evo 860 has 600TB. I'm holding out for the evos to drop below $200 as I plan to put them in my NAS so the endurance rating is reasonably important to me

      • Would it not be a better use case for some mechanical nas rated drives in RAID0? I suppose we don't know exactly what your use case is.

        • +1

I've got enterprise grade NAS drives in there at the moment (The joys of working for a storage vendor), and the drives definitely aren't my performance bottleneck. I'm not after SSD's for performance, the main appeal is the noise of an SSD so I can locate the enclosure near the TV. The reliability of a non-mechanical drive is also a huge bonus for me

          • @geech: Wouldn't it be far cheaper to just sound proof your case?

            • @KARMAAA: I’ve got a synology enclosure, so not a heap of room internally. Whilst expensive, I do like the idea of removing spinning drives from it due to the reliability of SSD’s

              • -1

@geech: Just build a box out of plexiglass and wood around it and leave enough room for soundproofing. Far cheaper than spending a bunch on SSD's. That being said, yes, SSD's are more reliable, but there's various types of RAID configurations that can get around that if you're interested.

          • @geech: Are you a homeowner? You might be better off just having ethernet points installed in your house and have it all going to a central patch panel located in a cupboard or garage or somewhere well-ventilated and out of the way. You can keep all your server-related stuff and gear in one spot.

            • @skittlebrau: I am, and this is my current setup - however I'd prefer the NAS to be in the loungeroom. It also doesn't solve the reliability issues of mechanical drives. I know there are cheaper solutions, but if I wanted the cheapest solution I would have used an old PC with heaps of HDD's and a software NAS solution instead of an appliance.

      • Maybe samsung has the money to buy out a better endurance rating.. they are kinda of a giant country size company.. they can do that

I have an MX300, I've had it for around 2 years now, it works quite good still to this day. All SSD's however slow down the more data they hold, as the controller has to search more chips to find the data or where data can be written. I will say though in terms of read speed it's basically the same as Day 1 in terms of boot times and opening programs.

  • Just how long are these drives supposed to last I think the one I use now is 6 years old…

MTBF is 1.8 million hours …. you will bin it before it fails due to electronics failing …people tend to focus on how often they be re-written as read doesn't wear out the cells, it's limited writes ….

it's safe to assume you will probably upgrade before it fails in normal business use in desktop or laptop.

Why do I get this error everytime I try to apply on my ebay account.
This is really pissing me off.
"This code can't be applied to your order."

    • Did you change your eBay location to the US for the recent promos?

      • This has been happening before that US promo deal … And yes I changed it but does it matter now??
And if it is should I try creating another account??

  • GREAT Getting it tried the https://www.groupon.com.au/deals/ebay-1 deal but cant stack!!

    • Yes, it says "You can only apply one voucher code to this purchase".

  • I really want to throw one of these in my PS4 Pro, but I know they don't use them as effectively as PC's. My Pro currently has the stock slow 1TB. I was going to upgrade it to a 2TB HDD with better caching, but for an extra $91 I can get this…

I also heard on some forums that SSD's in the PS4 lock up after a while of use or something. I suppose you can only half fill it too or it will get slower.
