New Business Consultancy Company - Which Bookkeeping Should I Use/ What Do You Use? Xero? Quickbooks?

Hi Oz

I've been using Quickbooks paying less than $15 month (a very good deal) but been told by my accountant to switch to Xero for a more convenient and time-saving accounting tasks

Do you agree with this statement?

I am more mindful of saving time than saving costs so the more cost involved with Xero is not a major concern for the firm.

It'd be great if you could kindly share your experiences and opinions!!

  • I have both and Xero is far far easier to use.

The invoicing is clearer and I can easily reconcile with bank accounts… Payroll and BAS is a breeze with Xero

I would love to migrate my data from QuickBooks to Xero, if anyone knows how to do it with low cost.

    • Have you used MYOB? How does Xero compare to MYOB?

  • I would stick to what accountant suggest.

I moved from Xero to Quickbooks (QuickBooks Simple - A$15.00 pm+ GST) and will stay with Quickbooks.

My needs - I am a micro IT consulting and events business and needed to pivot as the market had become competitive. To reduce costs I moved to Quickbooks. Here is my take. I don't use payroll. Use automated bank feeds, Use both desktop and app to access Quickbooks.

User interface - Xero is probably better (and more exciting) but Quickbooks is not too bad and I am happy to use it.
Depth - I suspect Xero has more depth but for my purposes, Quickbooks is very adequate.
Book Keeper - My bookkeeper uses MYOB and was not keen on Xero/Quickbooks. I guess bookkeepers would like customers to use the package they use most
Price - Xero is $50 pm for standard (starter at $25 is limiting). Quickbook Simple - $16.50 All inc GST on 5 Oct 2018

Bottom line - Quickbooks works well enough for my needs, user experience and features and the price is very reasonable compared to Xero. I suspect the lead that Xero has over Quickbooks is overstated. Support from Quickbooks has been good and they are less "salesy". Xero probably has better community and online resources.Hope that helps.

    • In Melbourne by any chance? I'm in a similar industry and run a small MSP (one man show) and need someone who can help with Holiday relief overflow etc.

      • Sorry in Sydney.I have taken up a job and quite enjoying the 9 to 5 for now.

        • No worries mate, I can certainly see the appeal of 9-5 after doing this for a while.

It really depends hows your operations goes , I am Xero trainer and partner and a bookkeeper and i know its easier for me to bring clients into XERO .
However if you find that quickbooks easier to use for your day to day operations just advise your accountant and i am pretty sure that your accountant will work around it
