  • Something I've been wondering. What is the benefit of 6kw+ panels paired with a 5kw inverter compared to 5kw panels with a 5kw inverter?

    • This is a good read

      https://www.solarquotes.com.au/blog/oversizing-solar-arrays/

In short, we dont always have the optimum sun and this higher panel to inverter ration sort of compensates for it and better the total wattage is to the total capacity of the inverter, the better its performance.

CEC allows upto one third extra panel power to inverter power

    • comparatively bigger shoulder period generation.. a 5kW system's generation profile looks like a triangle while a 6kW+ system's generation profile looks more like a "torso"
edit: also efficiency is an issue like others said

    • 5kw of panels can technically output 5kw of power in optimal conditions, but unless it's a bright sunny day it'll likely be less. 6kw or there abouts might still put out 4-5kw in less than perfect conditions. So a 5kw inverter would rarely be maxed with 5kw of panels.

    • I have panels for 7KW on the roof, but can only export 5KW max anyway (Queensland).
BUT: 2/3 are positioned to the North and 1/3 to the North-East, so they catch much more of the daily sunshine and for longer.
Since installation in 2012 the average export is 23.2 KWh per day (not calculating the internal usage).

      • You manage to export 23.2 KWh back to the grid? Do you know how much your property uses in KWh during the solar time?

        • Not a lot, no airconditioning, nearly no heating, just 2 laptops, washing is done before sunrise (cheap import power), hot water and cooking is gas, no dishwasher.
Daily import from the net is half of what it was before (ca. A$350.- then, A$180.- now for 3 months), between 9 and 11 KW per day for Pool, Biocycle and a few LED lamps.
All data from the actual readings on the invoices.
I'm on Origin Super Saver, 21% off supply and usage, 51.00 c/kWh for export.

  • So, it's 6.38 KW panels but with 5 KW inverter? Does that mean it can only work as 5 KW?

    • +2

The system can only concurrently generate a maximum of 5Kw, which is fine because of:

      • System losses means that 5 to 20% of the energy is lost anyway
      • Peak power is only for a short time, but overall the system will generate more during non-peak times.
      • Allows for the panel configuration to be split (e.g. West 3.2Kw + North 3.2Kw, so the peak efficiency is at two different times of the day)
  • +3

Well. The panels don’t work at a 100% efficiency, they are only 80%-85% efficient. Having put more panels to max out to 6.38 or 6.6kw gives you more output as close to the 5kw inverter capacity.
At any given time, the system does not produce more than 5kw per hour.

  • +1

Yep, that's standard fair, the ability to produce greater than 5kw is limited to time of day and sky conditions, shading, etc if you look at the research having a 6kw inverter wouldn't let you feedback much more when it is averaged out over the day, in some research it is suggested the 5kw would actually generate more.

  • The solar panels will never be able to continuously produce 6.3kwH, not even in summer. Reason being the rated efficiency is an average total and you're probably looking at best, 95% efficiency. Also, panels degrade over time. I would advise that the inverter be battery ready, that will be the future.

    • With the battery ready inverters, there are 2 schools of thought. Most recent inverters can be retrofit to a battery(including the Fronius Primo). But battery ready would mean, the inverter provides the ability to directly charge the battery and retrofit fit would mean, the charging of the battery is routed through the actual mains switch board.

Given the prohibitive high costs of battery, there are actually very few battery ready inverters in the market which are really good and most of them are quite expensive. The only Fronius model which is hybrid is the Symo one but would need 3 phase power.

The cost difference of having a good battery ready inverter and to install a good inverter now, and retrofit it with battery in the future is a few hundred dollars with the battery ready ones being cheaper.

I'm personally not in for battery so to me non-battery ready inverter works :)

  • Accreditation page - link not working

    • Thanks for that.. Fixed it now. You might want to search by installer details and put in sparkin energy to get the details. It would be in Dandenong, VIC. We have recently moved to Lyndhurst

  • +1

Fronius is an export limiting inverter so only 5kW will ever go back into the grid.

Oversizing panel array gives you that 5kW exported more often and longer.

We did it at our rental and definately outperforms our standard 5kW panels / 5kW inverter at home.

    • Is it a bad thing that it is export limiting?

Are these panels and inverter of good quality?

Roughly how do I tell what size solar system I need compared to say daily Kw usage?

    • The grid only take feed in up to 5kw only anyway if you're on single phase so it doesn't matter

  • Hey Ash, I am interested to pursue only if I'm eligible for the rebate. Double story house though. Drop me a PM?

    • Sure.. Will do :)

  • Is this applicable to people with existing solar installation ?
    I have a 1.5kw setup right now. https://imgur.com/a/bg87TZ9

I think there is spare space on the roof, however the 1.5kw currently takes up the north facing portion of it.
Is it possible to go with this deal ?

    • Will DM you to discuss mate

  • Hi Ash,
Interested as well, single story house single phase. Drop me a PM please?

Also, do you provide monitoring? warranty?

    • WIll PM Mate. Thanks for the warranty reminder. Will add it to the actual post.. stupid me dint do it before

  • I am interested in installing solar in Vic given the rebates, but one thing that concerns me is damage to the tiled roof.

What is the chance when installing the solar panels that tiles will be cracked or dislodged? What if I have subsequent roof leaks? I'm not sure I have spare tiles anywhere so just want to know what the go is here?

    Thanks,

    • It depends on the type of tiles , how old they are and their condition. We usually recommend our customers to atleast have 4-5 spare tiles so that we can replace it if the need arises. If the spare tiles are not there, we recommend to source it before installation. It is always good to have some spare tiles that match your roof colour

Older Terracotta tiles is a different ball game altogether. You would need to provide alteast 20-25 spare tiles.

  • interested as well! price and warranty looks good

i did get a quote last year for a jinko panels and fronius inverter, they were asking 10k (another company) … (with rebate and special discount too)

    • The prices have come down a bit but not so much . But if you were talking to some middlemen marketing companies, i prefer not to comment :D

  • +2

Just a comment, the use of 290W panels is a weird one, as you are limiting yourself to 6.38kW instead of 6.6kW (because having 23x 290W panels would put you over the 133% of 5kw = 6.6Kw CEC allowance).
Wouldn't a panel offering of 22x 300W (6.6kW) panels, or 23x 285W (6.55kW) panels be a fair bit better? You are shortchanging your systems by 220W installed capacity. What impact does 220W over the life of the system (lets call it 15-20 years) have? Its nearly a full panel, so I'd say a lot.

    • Cost of the 300W panel at this stage makes this a better option and given that the inverter is restricted to 5 KW at this stage, based on our calculation, they would give the same output.

That said, we are talking to a supplier to get a bulk discount for the 300W panels. Expecting it to happen early next week. If that happens, we would put in the 6.6KW system for the same price.

I have already informed some of the customers of this possibility and have pushed the installation dates for those who wanted to wait and see. But dint want to put it out here before we finalise it :)

    • Just heard back from the supplier, it would be $100 extra for the 6.6 KW system

  • Interested as well but live in Berwick, probably more than 40 km from the CBD, what are the additional costs for Berwick, not too far from Lyndhurst!

    • Berwick wouldnt be an issue mate. the cost would be the same. Only double storey and roof type charger might apply based on your situation

  • Make sure that Sparkin Energy can supply a Solar Provider Statement, per VIC government rebate requirements.

    • Yes. We have issued the SPS for many customers and many customers have also taken the post-installation route(including myself)

  • +1

Note: Longi doesn’t have a registered office in Australia, so any warranty issue may have to be handled by the importer

Otherwise they look like a good panel.

  • Note to OzBargainer’s interested in this.

I had a quote for a very similar system recently (6.4kw Jinko + Frontis), it was $5890. So this quote is likely better overall, and does appear to be a good deal.

  • Hello is this available in Wallan Victoria please

    • Hi, Wallan would have an extra $200 for the travel

  • OP - Longi Panels vs Trina Panels ?

Fronius Inverter - What will be smart Meter cost ?

    • Smart meters will cost $350 extra. The fronius comes with wifi based inbuilt monitoring anyways. The smart meter will only help you correlate it with your actual consumption(Explanation for the use of wider audience :))

Trina is pricier than LONGi and has been in existence longer as a solar Panel manufacturer. But LONGi have been producing solar wafers for a while and are even said to be the supplier for LG panels.

LONGi in the last 2 years have been able to come up with better efficiency panels and seem to be innovating faster.

Both are very good choices and have good market share

We generally recommend Jinko, LONGi or Trina

  • Hey mate, interested. Shoot me a Pm.

    In rockbank VIC

    • PMed you mate

  • sent rep a PM 2 hours ago, still no reply yet. Guess he's been flooded with PMs

    • +1

OMed you.. yes OZBargain is keeping me busy :)

  • If i already have panels on my roof, and got the last rebate years ago, I assume i'm no longer eligible for this rebate? - but thought id ask based on your post above to zoop….

    wouldn't mind upgrading my system…to 5-6KWs.

    • if your installaiton was before 2009, the rebates will be applicable. But addition of capacity is something that they havent mentioned anything about. I reckon it is best for you to call VIC solar on 1300 363 744 before proceeding.. I said the same to Zoop too

  • Just heard back from the supplier, the best based on our volumes for a 300W mono panels would cost $100 extra.. hence that would be 6.6 KW system installed at $5699 before rebate. I will edit the post to add it.

We continuously check with various suppliers to see if we can get better prices. But as at this moment, this is the best

  • +1

what is the current installation wait times considering your "increased" workload due to Ozbargain?

    • +1

At the moment, it is still within 10 days given a lot of it is still in the enquiries stage.. But i have flagged it to the team warning about an OZBargain wave :)

  • How many m2 of roof do you need for this many pannels?

    • If you put an enquiry through they will check your roof using high quality aerial imaging.

It’s not just about roof space, but also orientation and shading.

But the panels are 1m x 1.7m each.

  • Where is the inverter usually mounted? Is it on an external wall open to the weather or on garage wall for example?

I've heard it's good to keep them shaded?

    • Shade is the only requirement as they get pretty hot. They are rated for external or internal installation.

They should ideally be within a few metres of your meter box, if not right next to it, because the highest power losses are on the AC side between the inverter and the meter.

Edit: Bunnings sells small aluminium awnings which can be mounted above inverters

  • +1

Highly recommend those who are interested to opt for the 300w panels. 22 of these will fully max out the 5kw inverter.

Just had same panels installed today.

  • interested in 6.6KW LONGi Mono panel system(300W*22) with 5KW Fonius Primo 5.0.1, please PM

    • Replied to your PM mate!!

  • Good system and panels. Although the hidden extras for double story, colorbond roof and what not is a shame.

    • +3

There is manual labour, wiring , accessories etc are more for double storey etc. Keeping the cost same to everyone means, we are having to charge a higher cost for a customer whose installation is simple.

That to us felt unfair hence we moved to this model.

  • I'm also interested in 6.6KW LONGi Mono panel system(300W*22) with 5KW Fonius Primo 5.0.1, please PM

    • PMed you!

  • interested in 6.6KW LONGi Mono panel system(300W*22) with 5KW Huawei Inverter SUN2000L and cost of optimizers. please PM

    • What was the cost of the Huawei?

      • Have not got a quote to answer the question.

  • I'm also interested in 6.6KW LONGi Mono panel system(300W*22) with 5KW Fonius Primo 5.0.1, please PM

Also a noob question, once you have installed this system can you later upgrade the number of panels or change inverter or add battery to the setup?

I'm wondering in case my energy use expands in the future.

    • +3

You can’t add panels without changing the inverter because you can only oversized the inverter by 33%, which this deal already does.

The Fronius Primo isn’t battery-ready, but some battery systems can work with any inverter including the Primo (notably the Telsa Powerwall 2).

The best option is always to purchase the best system you can upfront for the money & roof space you have, rather than purchase small and upgrade later.

  • Hi Op,
hope you still here but I'm interested to in : 6.6KW LONGi Mono panel system(300W*22) with 5KW Fonius Primo 5.0.1.
Got 2 quotes already but i guess another one would not hurt.

    please PM me.

    • It is.. the VIC rebate is $2225 if you are eligible. PM me for further info

  • Sent you a PM

  • +1

Just recently got the solar installation done by Sparkin Energy. It was a job well done. Had some issues during installation but nonetheless Ash was able to overcome it and finished the job. It has only been a few days since but so far so good. Hardworking lad, I think they worked for a total of 10 hours at my place. Communication is a bit lacking but I did make a mention to him and he said he will try to improve on that front. A happy customer here!

  • Hi, is this offer still available? Suburb is Truganina.
    Thanks
