Rated by Canstar as a 5 star super, but their review on 'productreview' is miserable.

product review is terrible. host plus delivers.

    • Yes I have a little chuckle every time someone quotes that website.

Their balanced option has been a leader for quite a long time in returns, however past performance cannot guarantee future. I am with them as they were my default super and have been very happy.

    • Balance usually low return. What is the average return for say 5 and 10 years?
      And the fee?

        balanced index

        0.05% fee + $78pa admin

        10% return pa

    • Pretty sure it's the balanced option that is Scott Pape's favourite? Would need to double check though.

That is HostPlus balanced index fund, which is different from their default balanced fund (which also has much higher fees than their index offering that Pape recommends)

        • Correct. As an index fund it is not actively managed, therefore the p/a fee and % fee is really cheap. In the long (which Super is) there is much financial literature stating this is the best option.

          • @afah0447: that is, if you don't buy it right now…

  • I'm with them and very happy.

  • Good returns but they are an expensive industry super fund. Compare their fees with AustralianSuper and you will know what i mean !

    • Something to consider

It appears Australian Super may freeze redemption from their property investment option in future. So my gut feel seems to think

      a) They see something much bigger looming that you and I don't know about yet
      b) They must be heavily involved in unlisted property which maybe revalued at a different and lower price. (Otherwise they wouldn't have made such a media release)
      c) Interest rate affecting yields which affects growth. Over the long term interest rates are more likely to remain flat if not increase.
      d) If already with AustralianSuper, its likely the diversified balanced funds will have some property allocation. This could potentially affect other funds as result.

*I don't work or have any relationship/funds with HostPlus. Just stating facts

      • Thats unfortunately is the downside of investing in unlisted asset. Host PLus has much larger portfolio allocated to unlisted asset - they openly say we are a young fund so can take much longer view and is one of the key reason they have outperformed other funds.

So if thats the concern, better to stay away from Host.

You want to be in a situation where there is zero incentives to levy fees as even a small fee has castrophic effects on compounding over a long term period.
