Travelling to China for 3 Months (ING VS Citibank)

Hi fellow Ozbargainers….
I am going to travel to China (GuangZhou) and stay there for approximately 3 months. I Have 2 questions that I would like to hear your tips and thoughts.

1) How can I keep getting the ING bonus interest? I would need to do 5 transactions per month, how do you guys do it??

2) Which card is better to use overseas ING or Citibank?? Is ATM withdrawal the way to go??

Thanks in advance for your input

  • Ing is very good, I have had over 2k in atm refunds in the last year .

You should get both cards and use one as a backup.

To meet the transactions is very easy. It's any transaction that uses the card details. You can meet the $1000 transaction by just using payid and transferring between two accounts.

    • You mentioned atm refunds, did ING cover international ATM fees? i.e. 7/11 ATMs charge you a $5 dollar fee and ING absorbed it?

    • I like Ing , been using it for years now.
But they implemented the 5 card purchases per month thingy.

How can I make it if I'm overseas

      • Can buy something online cheap like $1-2?

        • Has to be an eftpos payment. Maybe get a friend to do it for you?

  • Would Beemit transfers count to it? You could do 5 transactions to a friend and they could do the same back to you . I think ING is the best Australian card for overseas withdrawals now as they refund all fees including the foreign atm fees.

    • i believe it does from what people have said but be very careful with the new terms they just released, its to stop people using the card excessively or gaming the system with these transfers between accounts.

There is an easy way to check, login using a pc or phone browser in desktop mode you can see if ypur transactions have qualified.

you really need to carry a backup card or multiple cards, can not stress that enough.

    • Card purchases includes in store credit or EFTPOS purchases, online purchases, regular card payments, payWave, Apple Pay, and Google Pay transactions made with an Orange Everyday Visa card, Orange One or Orange One Platinum Visa card or Nil Interest Visa card provided with an eligible ING home loan. When using the phrase 'settled' card purchases in a calendar month, we mean that the purchases made on your card must be fully processed by the end of the last day of that month. Card purchases made in store or online this current calendar month which are at a 'pending status' and do not settle until the next calendar month do not count towards the 5 card purchases needed this current calendar month.

maybe you can pay a bill in instalments?
