Nexgard Spectra Very Large Dog - $98.35 inc Free Shipping @ Pet Circle

40

Good price on the very large dog Nexgard Spectra. Cheaper than at PetBarn using 25% voucher.

For an added bonus, cut down chews to size for your actual dog size. Pricing on the chews is non-linear related to dog size. The tiny dogs cop a massive price increase. Edit: or don't split them. Your money.

Good price on the very large dog

    Sure is…

I am pretty sure they state somewhere not to split their chews, especially when more then one active ingredient (these do, for flea/ticks and then worming). As there is no guarantee the ingredients are evenly "spread" through the tablet. So you could cut in half and get like 60% of one active ingredient and 40% of the other.

      lol

This is correct - it's taking a risk that the treatment won't be effective, which pretty much makes it useless.

Have you thought about how they guarantee that the ingredients are spread evenly within any whole tablet then?????

Do you really think they make and test each tablet separately?

        • They aren't tablets, they're chewables.

          • @Scab: Despite your pedantic reply, his question still stands.

            • @macrocephalic: Despite your pedantic failure to read my other comment, I've already explained why.

              I suggest you read it.

Do they make each tablet seperately instead of mixing it in a massive broth then dispersing into moulds?

The only way I imagine it being uneven is if one ingredient is much heavier than another and it settles during drying or cooking.

Do you have any evidence of any products (not just this) with uneven ingredient distribution?

If it's actually true (I highly doubt it but happy to be proven wrong with actual evidence because it will help many people if so), then just crush the product and divide it evenly after mixing it up.

Those rumours sound like irresponsible marketing.

      • Those rumours sound like irresponsible marketing.

        that…

      • Some info here

        https://www.thevetpractice.com.au/tablet-splitting-yes-or-no…

How true or not this stuff is i make no claim of. Just alerting others to consider it.

        • The reason that article gives for not splitting chewables is to avoid them drying out and being less desirable to the dog. Hardly a scientific reason. Also, wouldn't a vet who sells these products want to well…sell these products?

          • @LuckyDrew: My dogs don't like chewing them anyway, we have to cut them into a few pieces and stick them down their throats - just like tablets.

We continue to use the chews because one chew is easier than managing multiple tablets on different timelines (with two different sized dogs).

    • Except, if you compare them, the chews for bigger dogs are proportionately bigger than the chews for the small dogs.

In other words, they just make up a big vat of this stuff and put it into chews of different sizes. If they can't guarantee the ingredients are spread evenly through the big chews, then they can't guarantee that the correct amounts are in the small chews that they sell.

      • +1 for the vat. Makes no sense for the ingredients to be uneven. It's purely marketing to sell based on dog size.

  • My understanding why it's not suggested is that only tablets with a score line should be cut.

Chewables shouldn't be split, some chewables have a coating to preserve the ingredients as air and moisture can affect them.

That's also why they're sealed in foil.

    • That's also why they're sealed in foil.

I thought the foil was for making a hat.

  • I but these for convenience but my dog thinks they taste foul. Pretty sure they also give him the trots but he has a delicate stomach. Hadn't thought to cut them down and I'm sure if you kept them in the fridge the would keep until the next month.
Can anyone suggest any alternatives though that treat for everything?

    • -1

Nothing else treats everything, nor do you need to.

For ticks and fleas, you can use Bravecto which lasts 3-4 months or they have a 6 month spot on one.

For heartworm you can get an injection from the vet which lasts a year.

For worms, you don't Need to do it every month, every 3 is perfectly fine.

And cutting chewables is not recommended and the fridge is the worst place to put them because of moisture.

      See my reply above.

also $98.35 plus 1.4% cash rewards.

I recent was a pet circle fan until I found budget pet products. They have beaten pet circle on blackhawk 20kgs and my last nexgard purchase. I keep emailing pet circle to price beat rather than match, but they won't budge…. so BPP is my new provider :)

    • Thanks for the tip, have bookmarked them for future reference :)

Rich pharmaceutical ceo here. You should never split your dogs chewables as it would then take me twice as long to get my new Porsche. It just isn't worth risking your dogs health for the sake of making me delay my gratification.PS the active ingredients are right side upper portion. Gotta go as I'm looking at ways to shred documents on cost cutting at dreamworld.

  • Jack Russell terrier here.I find if you spit the upper right portion out the rest tastes great.

  • What is this… where’s the very large dog??
    I’m confused

  • I have been looking everywhere for a 6 pack of spectra yellow for small dogs. It's been out of stock in every shop I've looked for at least the last 2-3months. What's up with that?

      • I'm looking for the yellow.

    • You mean orange, Petbarn have them but unless there's a sale they're expensive.

      https://www.petbarn.com.au/brand/nexgard/nexgard-flea-and-ti…

      • No, I mean yellow. Also that's not Spectra.

    • I was also waiting for some cheap Yellow ones to come up, everywhere was either out of stock or had them priced high. I have just noticed Pet Circle have them for $82 on the 6-pack so i've gone with that. I actually had set up a notification from Pet Circle when they came back in stock but I never got it.

Previously have paid $80 through Petbarn eBay sale.

I have 2 dogs so normally buy a few packs so they last a while (1 pack = 6 months for 2 dogs).

  • I read if you feed the ticks with nextgard it makes them Inert. Its a bugger getting them down their throat though.

A lot of good discussion here. I as a pet owner am comfortable with the risk of then active ingredients not being evenly distributed.

    A. It is likely they will be and the above mentioned vat approach is probably true. The sizes look identical.
    B. The info in the packet includes the intended doses in mg/kg. I cut the doses into 4 pieces. I have a 7.8kg dog and a 9kg dog. Assuming even roughly evenly distributed ingredients they'll get the minimum dose.
    C. I read some studies on overdosing. They gave beagle puppies a bucket load. No dead beagles.
