Gumtree - Giving out Banking Details

So I've read various cases re: usual scams and screenshots so I've always used and waited for funds to drop into your bank account via direct deposit.

Until now there's no way to recall it so once it hits your BSB and account I presume it is safe? Or is it not?

Anyhow my short story: listed phone for sale. Asked about posting interstate. Offered slightly more than listed (red signs). Asked if it'll work with optus network. Done deal, surprisingly easy. Bank details asked.

I've been playing along on the basis of seeing where this go. In the past I've had direct deposits for even an old Digimon in blind faith (I could've pocketed the money and not mailed it) so i have kept an open mind this could be legit. I also dropped hints of direct deposits only and this didn't scare them off (thought they'd pull the old "here's my screenshot for payment" trick)

Just keen to hear what others thought. Did another Google and came across this article. So it seems it could be used for direct debits? Is that a common scam and are you held liable?

Alternatively does setting up pay id provide an anonymous way of receiving the money without giving my personal BSB and account? Do they need their bank to support pay id or do all banks support this now?

P.S. also got a quick Gumtree msg after listing of an user who has a friend that is interested …can i email her address?? Presumably it takes your records off the grid? But if you received cash or a bank deposit unlike airbnb etc which has coverage for transacting through the platform I would have thought Gumtree is indifferent?

Cash only in person or nothing!

  • The old tip. Deal with cash especially when your using gumtree. Anything can happen.

What if they have counterfeit notes?

      • +6

fight fire with fire - hand them a counterfeit phone.

        • +2

          but bring real bikies

        • Would legit buy ebay counterfeit phones sold for trolling these people haha.

      • What if they have counterfeit notes?

For this reason, and also for security when handling any large sum of cash, I go inside of my bank to trade cash, sign over paperwork/receipt etc. Then I deposit the cash they just gave me immediately.
If they did hand over counterfeit cash for the sale, 1)They are on camera 2)I find out almost straight away.

  • Their bank needs to support payID too. Make sure you see them complete the payID on their phone and take a photo of the reference number - transferring money through payID to a number for the first time takes 24 hours to complete. Didn't know this when I first used payID and thought I got scammed.

    • much better if you two meet near atm and ask him to withdraw cash.

    • Buyer is interstate given the request for postage… hence the red flag anf wondering if i can call bluff as they are asking for banking details.

      • They can't do much with your bank account details unless they have other info about you. Only post after you see the money in your account (if giving bank details) and let them know this. You'd think it's harder to recall money from a direct transfer then payID.

        • They do get my name with the bank account details…

Would i be safer giving a bpay reference out so it gets paid off directly into my credit card. The reference last 4 digitd are usually different so they wont have your exact credit card number either (since most use your credit card as reference)

on whirlpool thread: buyer deposited fraud cheques to seller bank account, so after one or two days, buyer see the money hit his/her account and send the item.
a week later bank reversed the credit.
    seller cries.

    do NOT do it.

    • A cheque would deposit in differently to a pay anybody style bank deposit wouldnt it.?

      • +1

Nah, it'd look pretty much the same on your end.

        • +1

It would look differently, and the available balance would be different to the current balance until it clears.

          • @Agarwal: The dead giveaway would be the avail balance vs currenr balance difference then??

If one deposits by direct deposit fraudulently i.e. stole someones account, you'd still end up with avail balance matching but are banks allowed to claw back stolen funds if they paid you and it cleared to you?

I was thinking alternatively to call their bluff i could request a bpay payment to my credit card. That way they get at most the bpay code and part of your card number per the reference number but cant do much else with it??

            • @SaberX: Isn't your credit card account number the entire 16 digits?

              • @Love a bargain: With my cards the last 4 digits of the reference are different to the credit card. The numbers before are the same. Figure they cant do much without a full reference and even then they dont have my cvv number?? So if they dont bpay and keep my deets i figure i wont haveto toss and turn at night that someone knows my bank account numbers??

  • Just to clarify as a few others have suggested getting cash out of atm or viewing their pay id:

This buyer is asking for an interstate postage of the phone and offering 180. Listed for 150 lol.i just wondered if there was a rare chance it could be legit and i didnt intend to send anything until cash cleared. The only worry is a) what happens giving your banking details and name. And b) can a cash pay anybody deposit be revoked?

Red flag, its a scam, you will lose the money and your item.

ZERO change that it is legit.

      • I was thinking alternatively to call their bluff i could request a bpay payment to my credit card. That way they get at most the bpay code and part of your card number per the reference number but cant do much else with it??

Everyone wants a bargain. No such thing as jack up price/cost ebay style on Gumtree. Unless if it is a collectible.

If you still insist, tell the buyer if agrees, once the money is cleared, you will send the item. Lets see what the buyer says.

  • Offered slightly more than listed (red signs).

This is gumtree we're talking about here where you're lucky if you're not lowballed. Who in their right mind offer to pay more than what you're asking for?

A very very slight chance that it could be legit if you've listed a very cheap price, but I would simply avoid that transaction to save the possible issues.

    • It reads as though the buyer offered to pay slightly more due to wanting it posted. That sounds fine to me.

I've posted some items I've sold on Gumtree after the buyer sent payment to my bank account (usually online, but I have received more than one teller deposit). So far I haven't been scammed, but I automatically ignore anyone that seems fishy.

      • Yes went back to convo and they mentioned if i would post for the right price.

Was then offered the 180 over my 150 listing price….

I was thinking maybe i could go a bpay route. They bpay my credit card and my name and banking details dont go out. You cant do much with a bpay ref as last few digits differ to your card (and they dont know who i am or my cards secure CVV code either)

My advice would be to stick with cash on pick up. If you give out your banking details, it’s now out of your hands you have no control over where it goes, how it’s used, or who has it. Think of it like giving out the address of your locked money box to someone. Technically the money is still inside, and you have the key but you don’t know who you’ve told or who they’ll tell about your money box. Who would you trust to tell about your money box?

    • How about getting them to bpay to my credit card. Pays off my card and no details given.

  • Why are you even considering this is legit? Red flag all over as soon as buyer is offering $30 more than what you want.

I have also heard of money bank transactions being reversed after a few days.

The golden tip still stands true for gumtree: Only deal in cash and meet at a public place.

PayID is supported by most banks, but not all just yet. It is secure and a good way to provide your address without handing over your BSB and Account Number.

Having said that, BSB and Account Number has been the normal way to receive credits in. If someone uses that info for nefarious purposes you are usually not liable. It would be raised as a fraud case to your bank and you will most likely receive the funds back.

Most direct debit setups require that the applicant has been ID'd and that the direct debit details are in the same name, so unless they have other details about you then this shouldn't be an issue.

SOURCE: I work for a Credit Union in Internet and Mobile banking. I also assist our fraud team in some investigations. As long as you have a Stat Dec about not setting up the direct debit etc. then you should be fine if it even goes that far.

  • Tell them they would need to go into bank, deposit funds into your account directly at bank branch. Give your name account is under and account number.
I was buying online, then seller asked me to go outside of the website, for better deal for both of us. I would hate to get 1 number wrong, and lose my money, so if you have the account number AND the name, then bank can comfirm to ensure its going into correct account. Because the seller had many transactions, I also left a note eg "this payment is for gumtree phone" .
That is what the buyer should do.
What you should do, is check online banking and see that they have made a cash deposit in person. Do NOT trust a screenshot sent by stranger

    • Alternatively given its interstate could i not just ask them to bpay into my credit card. Pays off the card, i dont reveal my name which you need to for bank deposits nor the bank account numbers?? Although my main worry was more what one could do with your banking details as i wasnt too fazed about funds disappearing as i know to check available vs current balances and ensure its a proper cash deposit. Would probably wait a week as well to send it haha.

Figured the bpay option may be a good alternative??

      • The only way to know if it's a cash or cheque deposit is by calling up the bank and asking.

      • I think anything electronic/online tranfer and anything on mastercard/visa etc can be reversed later.
When I was depositing cash into peoples account directly at bank, I did so because when I looked into it with my bank, they basically told me that even if I accidentally deposited into wrong account, and could prove it, the person could still keep the money.
So its a pretty safe bet that if they go into bank branch (whatever bank you are with) then just directly deposit cash, that there is no way they are reversing or getting that cash back.
Then if it is cash in your account, vs cheque, cash should show as available funds, whereas a cheque would show up different when you check your banking online. Maybe call up bank as Tarquin suggested to comfirm it is cash, if you are not sure if they deposited an uncleared cheque.
