You maintain status with Status Credits which are earned from flying.
Points (miles), do not count towards maintaining your Gold status.

Get on a plane, and start flying.

    • I get that…and will be flying. Just wondering which single trip route would use the least $ and still allow for the 80 status credits to maintain gold.

      • From Melbourne, you'd need to go to Singapore and back or maybe even go as far as Kuala Lumpur via Singapore on Singapore Airlines.
I did this a few weeks ago, and got 80 credits for around $750 via Expedia.com.my

Sydney to Melbourne is about 5-15 credits each way.
Perth to Melbourne is about 15-20 credits each way.
Perth to Brisbane is about 20-30 credits each way.
Melbourne to Singapore is 30 credits each way.
Singapore to KL is 10 credits each way.

But in edition to the status credits you normally need to fulfill a minimum number of eligible segments too.
This only includes Virgin Flights, so flights on Singapore Airlines doesn't help with that requirement.

        • Look into the Happy Hour flights on Thursday 4-11 p.m. you can get some quite cheap sectors for short stay holidays. If you are building up sectors it is best to wait until your timelimit has nearly elapsed as the "gold" year starts from when the final element occurs; whether that is sectors or status credits.

Link your Velocity account to Flybys.

Every $100 spend at Coles gives you 1 status credit.

It may not seem like a lot, but I probably get about 20 status credits a year from this. If you a really big shop, split the payment into 2 separate $100 payments to maximise the points. This could be what gets you across the line.

    • Thanks - but that's like a spend of $8000 and unfortunately I think the 80 status credits need to be earnt in the 3 month promo period.

      • As I said, you can use the Coles shop to get you over the line, not to get all 80 SC's

If you fly MEL/SIN/MEL and get 60 SC's as per Drew22 comment, then its only 20 SC's (or around $2K worth of shopping over 3 months) for some families, that is very achievable.

Why split it into $100 payments? I am 99% sure it says it takes the $ spent at the end of the month and uses that to calculate points. Not each transaction over $100

MEL-OOL VIA SYD in J nabs about 100 status credits and fullfils your requirments of 4 Qualifying VA flights. Cost about $1200

    • I think Elevate fares offer better bang for buck. MEL>CNS via SYD return in Elevate nets 70 status credits for under $600. Make up the other 10 in Flybuys. Or, fly MEL>SYD and then SYD>CNS via BNE; this will net you 50 status credits one way in Elevate.

  • Why don't u just go somewhere u actually want to go instead of flying purely to maintain gold? I'm sure there are some places u wouldn't mind flying to otherwise what's the point in the gold membership anyway!

    • Got a trip to Japan in Mar-ish 2019 that would like to use the Gold benefits..

  • If your travelling with a family member, set-up the family pooling option, you still have to get the sectors, but can double down on the status credits on your account. MEL-BNE-CNS, before the humidity goes crazy ?

  • Note you can only get a max of 10 status points via flybuys per month
