Advise on faulty turbo on Hyundai Santa Fe 2008

Hi guys,

Just need advise on my family car , it’s clocked 252 000 km, a few months ago I notice a little oil coming from inter cooler into the plastic engine cover and was told not to worry as the turbo does leak a little oil. Notice last week it has increased and notice oil leak under the car. Took it to a local mechanic who said it looks like it’s coming from the turbo and most likely might need the turbo changed. He said he wouldn’t touch it and to take it to a diesel mechanic. Does anyone know any honest diesel mechanic in the Epping area in Melbourne. I have been told over the phone it could cost 2 to 3 k.

Car has been running fine before this no major issues, any experts at these km is it worth fixing ? Or being high km will other things most likely follow?

Any advice would be great

No expert here. Just a n opinion. It's a 10 year old car. 250k on the clock. Does it sound to you it will have escalating problems? I would simply get rid of it.

Korean family SUVs… Audio equipment… what are you an expert in?

      • Which is why I said I am no expert. Just an observation that 10 year old Santa fes are probably worth 8 to 10k. If it's indeed true that the repair cost is indeed 2 to 3k then imo is too high.

Surely you have some talents or subjects you're well versed in though?

        • I think they were just making a joke about your username. Or at least an attempt at one….

    • I agree with above poster.

I wouldn’t spend the money to fix it.

You’re getting close to the age and KM when major service item tend to be due. Whilst it works I’d trade it in on something else.

      • Do I need roadworthy to sell? I was told diesels last longer that’s why I got one

        • It’s better for it to be roadworthy or in road worthy condition.

Diesels do last longer but there’s more to a car than an engine. Wiring, computers, pumps, belts, trim and other parts in the engine bay wear out/degrade over time.

I don't know about the Santa Fe specifically but I do most mechanical work on my own diesels. I wouldn't write off the Santa Fe just yet as it could be something simple like a gasket, copper washer or a hose clamp that needs tightening.
Off the top of my head it could be as simple as a leaking oil drain or feed hose to the turbo (for the leak under the car), and the oil near your intercooler could be oil vapour leaking out of the pipe between the intercooler and turbo (meaning the clamps just need tightening because a bit of vapour is normal).
If you had oil and clouds of smoke coming out of the exhaust and metal on metal scraping noises then that would be another story.

    • Hey mate thanks for the reply
No clouds or no metal scraping.

Just had the oil build up on the cover of engine last few months. And oil from under car slowly dripping. Nothing else. I’m just worried if the mechanics rip me off as I have no idea about cars. Is there anything I can see my self

    • How many of those minor issues would need a tonne in labour costs to fix though? Honestly asking; I don't actually know - I just know that sometimes changing a simple gasket will cost hundreds because you'll need to take the engine out.

      • I know everything is adding up especially as it’s family car and I’m only one working atm, just confused as to sell this off as is and what to purchase next on finance etc. I’ve never bought car on finance , and heard stories on high interest rates

Don't buy a car on finance. Especially if you need to buy it on finance - because that means you financially can't afford to finance it.

  • Took it to a local mechanic who said it looks like it’s coming from the turbo and most likely might need the turbo changed. He said he wouldn’t touch it

    When was it last serviced?

I agree. 10 years 252,000KMs. Time to go to the next owner.

    • It’s always serviced on time .every 10 k

  • Scrap the bucket of crap

The car is on life support, don't keep throwing money at it

    Hi
Go Here to the Aussie Hyundai Forum, register (join) its free. Then post your problem in the Santa Fe diesel section

It may be just a clip or hose as someone pointed out.
The forums are great as you access Australia wide owners who have similar cars problems and experiences

    • Thanks mate will do

    Hey guys,

Got a quote from ultra tune 2600
    PCV value needs replacement
    Engine gasket needs replacement
Rubber cushion on intercoolar needs replacement
    New intercooler
Oil change and filter and EGR flush

    Any thoughts on price?

Also took it to another local mechanic advised on such old car not worth all those changes, he found rubber holders from wreckers, he can fox down the intercoolar said replacement not required, oil change and filter he will do adviced egr flush not required, replacing the PCV value . He rekon under 400 he can do the lot

    • Intercoolar from Hyundai 1600 genuine by it self
