Uni Student Loses Court Battle over Assignment on Dog Breeds

Can't make this up… all the way to the Vic Supreme Court too.

Monash University student Chinmay Naik failed a video assignment about negative stereotypes around certain dog breeds in 2017 and failed again when it was re-marked.

[…]

Mr Naik had also taken his case to the Victorian Equal Opportunities and Human Rights Commission and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal

Edit: More details here: https://www.thecourier.com.au/story/5650998/vic-student-hope…

Interesting quotes:

"I've heard from other students who were subject to similar controversial practises," Mr Naik told reporters after representing himself in court on Monday.

"After hearing their stories I felt like I was not just fighting a case for myself. It was for all of them."

and

On top of the re-marking issue, he claims he didn't have time to complete the assignment as Monash was hesitant to grant special consideration on mental health grounds.

    • Yeah this guy basically commit social suicide by pulling such a (profanity) dumb act. Attempt at a short term gain with very potential long lasting effects, absolutely stupid.

      • google his name, some of his other youtube video assignments show up. he doesnt look like the brightest kid.

        • Haha I looked a few weeks ago when I saw it in the news. I thought it'd be the worst thing I'd ever seen, so the bar was set low and surprisingly he exceeded my expectations.

      • he's committed social suicide but the gain was just to get a pass that he believed he deserved.

i've seen some real garbage students with uni degrees so i think he considers that he belongs with them and not having to repeat the course.

unfortunately in some cases lecturers and assessment markers are corrupt assholes that fail you because they don't like you. i've seen it and been subject to it and it sucks.

i've got no doubt that this student doesn't deserve to pass, but if you had any idea of the sort of racial bias towards certain demographics, the level of corruption at university and international conference/journal level and the lengths that are reached to cover up wrongdoing it'd make your blood boil.

you can't bring those down from the ivory tower easily, it's damn near difficult unless you get a harvey weinstein victim level of co-ordination.

the problem is, most students move on or are in fear of coming forward because they can't afford to go to court, have no hard evidence or aren't willing to destroy their name because of a few years of mistreatment.

this guy is obviously making trivial complaints but there's far too much that is covered up and some students don't even know they've been discriminated against.

oh and if you think the student unions, councillors etc. are on the students side, believe me they are not, they all work for the university and will do whatever they can to make the student look bad (ie. accuse them of depression/mental illness) just to favour them in a court.

when they predict that shit will hit the fan with a particular student, they automatically start the evidence gathering process.

    • so many negs, if you disagree, reply. don't be a coward.
