9c litre off Shell (Coles) E10 Unleaded

31

Coles are offering an additional 3c a litre of their E10 fuel. The web link takes you to the Shell site where you can find out the nearest servo that sells the E10 Fuel. E10 is a 10% ethanol blend.

I could say something about renewable energy BUT I wont get on about that BS. What it is is cheaper. - thats why we are here at OZBargain.

So how do you triple 3c to 9c?

The deal goes like this. use your standard 4c voucher, then fill with E10 get another 3c, then buy something in Coles express worth $2 or more (a paper, some gum, icecream etc) and you get another 2c. = 9c

Yep there's the catch you gotta spend $30 in Kmart, Coles etc to get the 4c off voucher, likewise another $2 in Coles express to get a further 2c, but if you say want the $2 worth of items then you save more.

Still given that upto now e10 at shell was not discounted, you can save at least 7c a litre. For those without the BP card this is attractive..

Shell Unleaded E10 is currently available at selected Coles Express sites in NSW, ACT and QLD.

  • You got to read it right. I was at coles, and was reading the sign of how to get the discount, and YOU got caught out big time. What the sign was explaining was the E10 fuel was always 3 cents cheaper than regular unleaded, then you use the 4cent discount you got from kmart/coles, then you buy a $2 item from the station to get an extra 2 cents, which in total works out to be around 9 cents, there is no extra special here, it is what you regularly get if you are using the dockets all the time. You will still always get the E10 fuel 3 cents cheaper than regular unleaded, without any dockets. This is no bargain, and will be there all the time, cant wait till some posts 50% off fuel. That'll be the day.

    • DJS thanks for the explanation - at BP you get 3c off the fuel, with a card, which is only E10 - without the card no 3c off. Also BP doesn't stock a choice it's either E10 or not.

Guess I was too trusting of Cole's marketing machine (Like when they give us price reductions on increased prices)

At Shell it seems like you get 3c off when they have both fuels. If they only have E10 then you get the 3c off automatically - or do you as there is no other price to compare with - Sorta like saving $2 on a memory stick and paying $2 extra on postage..

    • Thanks DJS. Was trying to work out where in Coles they were talking about E10 fuel.

Ozpete, saving $2 on an item and paying $2 for shipping is still a better deal. You won't have to pay for the fuel to drive to where you need to get the item.

      • Sorry i was trying to say - saving $2 then paying $2 MORE on the postage eg $10 down to $8 then Postage up from $2 to $4 like some Deals posted here

  • How E10 fuel would affect the performance / mileage of your car?

  • From http://www1.eere.energy.gov/biomass/ethanol_myths_facts.html

"MYTH: Ethanol-gasoline blends can lower fuel economy and may harm your engine.
FACT: Ethanol blends in use today have little impact on fuel economy or vehicle performance."

-While ethanol delivers less energy than gasoline on a gallon-for-gallon basis, today's vehicles are designed to run on gasoline blended with small amounts of ethanol (10% or less) with no perceptible effect on fuel economy.

-Flex-fuel vehicles designed to run on higher ethanol blends (E85 or 85% ethanol) do experience reduced miles per gallon, but show a significant gain in horsepower.

-As a high-octane fuel additive and substitute for MTBE, ethanol enhances engine performance and adds oxygen to meet requirements for reformulated gasoline.

  • Get the Coles Source Card, get 9+4=13c off per litre…

However I usually don't bother buying anything from Coles Express — weekend newspaper being the exception with no additional markup. Even milk is too expensive.

So I take the 4+3+4 = 11c per litre off (Coles Group Source Card + 4c per litre docket voucher + 3c E10)

  • Your mileage may vary on E10.

    • Vary. A LOT.

Last time my wife pumped up our car at BP but she did not notice that she was pumping up E10 instead of the regular unlead (actually there is NO regular unlead at our local BP). My car, being ONLY 9 years old, actually was not on the list of models that can take E10. Subsequently I am getting around 20% less mileage (300+km instead of 400km+ of urban driving from 1 tank). Not happy.

      • Not trying to start something here - but if fuel has 10% ethanol and lets say its totally useless wouldn't you see a 10% reduction in mileage. What this implies is that the 10% ethanol is taking another 10% (20%) of the petrol's efficiency away, that's against even the most ardent anti ethanol proponents arguments…..

In my 15 year old car using E10 has reduced pinging, that before I had to use 1/2 UL and 1/2 PUL - so that in my case would confirm megaloman's comments about providing more horsepower

        • Obviously I have no idea when it comes to mechanics. Say for example, instead of burning properly, the ethanol actually becomes damaging to the engine, wouldn't you get even less mileage?

I guess the age of the car is relevant but it also depends on the make and model. According to Nissan only the post-2004 models are compatible, but a 1994 Camry would have no problem. Hmm.
