Giving non-government/non-law enforcement/non-legal/non-financial companies your Driver's License or Passport details

What do you think when a non-government/non-law enforcement/non-legal/non-financial company asks for your Driver's License or Passport details?

Was discussing at work and I never thought twice about this, but then a fellow co-worker mentioned it's dangerous … ie. giving a local Joe Blow gym your passport and driver's license, and they could get hacked etc.

Also recently for FlyBuys a workmate needed to provide their driver's license to validate their Coles FlyBuys …. (but we did all agreed that they shouldn't have called themselves Donald Trump on their FlyBuys account!! Haaa

So what do you guys think?

  • So what do you guys think?

I think you shouldn't hide the poll results…

    • Don't know how to change it … n00b here

asked for help from a mod

      • I think you'll find they were being ironic…

        • ahh I re-read @ozhunter's reply to my question …

Good one. I just got this …

  • It's got MY photo on it. unless they look like me how would getting hold of copy of my drivers licence help them? …If anyone wanted to produce a drivers licence with my name and someones else photo on it, I have no doubt it wouldn't be too hard to get my name, DoB and address anyway, or anyone elses.

True, but with CC fraud and ID fraud, it's not about using your DL with your photo … more about harvesting your data to build your fraudulent profile to do X (don't know what X is but it's something not nice) …

But then again, i'm the one that hands out my DL willy nilly :D

      • Yeah you are right, sometimes its helpful to one thing to get another and fake licences are easy enough to come by and people build things up then one thing gets you another thing and it would not be too hard to build up 110 points.

I read some states are trialing e-licences through a phone app.

    • You can activate a sim card with just the license number

      • Does the number even need to be valid or can you just make one up. My Wa dl number is 7 digits. Will any 7 digit number do.

You can verify a dl in wa but you need the dob, number and expiry date. I have no idea if it has limits on it, I think it doesn't as many workplaces go through and check all their drivers every month.

        • Of course it has to be valid, it is an identity check.

  • a fellow co-worker mentioned it's dangerous … ie. giving a local Joe Blow gym your passport and driver's license, and they could get hacked etc.

Did your colleague happen to mention how your passport and driver licence may be hacked? Passports have rfid which is encrypted while driver licence doesn't.

    • No I mean, the ID theft, and building a profile … not actually hacking at the passport or DL … sorry for confusion

It always bugs me when local RSLs and pubs take a copy of my license before allowing me to enter. Full name, Date of Birth, DL number, residential address and the same details from my wife is a powerful little data set.

    • Sign in the old way…

  • I don't mind the digital collection that much - I don't want to do it, but since reality says I have to in some cases then at least I can expect some amount of security (and at worst legal revenge)
It's the ones that photocopy them and just stick them in a drawer or something, that's just asking for trouble.

Drivers licence is fine so long as it's a fairly reputable company/or someone with a good reason (e.g. I'm taking their car for a test drive). Passport is a hell no. What the hell does someone need with my passport?

  • I don't. They put up a fuss, but once they see its not doing any good they fold. I think in one case they wouldn't go ahead without a photocopy, but we compromised and scribbled 'COPY' in red over it and blanked out the ID number. You don't need to make it impossible to forge your ID, just harder than the next person. And there are a lot of people willing to hand over details willy nilly.

  • I sell some stuff on good ol' Gumtree, the amount of times people want a copy of your drivers license is absolutely terrible. If you decline them taking a photo of your drivers license, they generally walk away.

Absolutely mind blowing that there are people with the IQ to think I'd allow someone to photograph my D/L to sell a $600 phone.

    • WTAF! …. why would any one want YOUR driver's license in buying a phone??? LOOOOOOOOOOOOOL that doesn't even make sense!

      • In-case it's reported stolen or something I'd imagine…

      • To convince the buyer that you're not a scammer. Possibly so they can also find you if they suddenly change their mind and want their money back.

I've seen people on threads here about gumtree recommending demanding drivers license!
