[SOLVED] Advice on Getting Crucial 16GB DDR3L for QNAP NAS

Hi all,

Need your opinion here.

I have QNAP TS-453be and need to add its memory to run various VM and other applications.

According to the QNAP forum thread, it is unofficially supports 16GB memory (specifically Crucial 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB) DDR3L-1600 SODIMM - CT2KIT102464BF160B)
I then checked eBay, staticIce, ramCity and Amazon; the cost for this memory is around $200+

Now, if I use a different model number but similar spec (Crucial 16GB 2x8GB PC3L-12800 DDR3L-1600MHz CT8G3S160BM); the cost is only: $148

Does anyone know why the price difference is so high, consider the type is the same? And do you think it is safe just to buy the cheaper one?

Update:
- I finally got the Samsung 16GB 1600 Mhz DDR3L Laptop RAM Memory PC3-12800 8G 1.35v (M471B1G73DB0) and it works perfectly (so far…)

add GST for the one from shenzhen China. And good luck if you need warranty.

  • I've never owned a QNAP NAS but is this an actual hard list of RAM that works because other RAM does not or a list of RAM that QNAP has tested?

I thought it was a standards compliant computer so you could add any RAM of same/similar spec but I could be wrong.

    • Yes, qnap nas the compatible brand through their international shop portal, but they only have the max of 4GB per memory (thus in total of 8GB only). Ideally to have 16GB in total

  • Not the exact setup you’ve got, but I have a QNAP TS451 running 16GB of ram with no issues. Officially, it also only supports 8GB as well. I used 2x Kingston KVR16LS11/8.

On a side note, memory prices really are terrible these days - whilst looking through my emails to get the part number, I saw that I paid $90 incl delivery for the two sticks in July 2016

  • TS 453 pro running Kingston 2 x 4GB I'm sure ebay had a shop selling ram with a compatibility list for Qnap. I can't see any of my purchase emails so I must have bought from Umart

    • Yes, but what I'm after is 2x8GB, which is officially not supported by qnap
