  • Ends up being $18pm for the plan which includes
    50GB of Data,
Unlimited Calls & Texts in australia
and Unlimited Calls & Texts to 35 International countries.

    Or $9.8pm for Students.

normally i am against contract but for $9.8 and that international inclusion, unlimited! really? thats sound too good to be true. but roaming isnt included. weird

    • normal plans don't include any roaming packages. perhaps this will change soon.

edit:but im sure you are still able to roam internationally (at a price)

    • +8

Nobody on Ozbargain would be paying RRP…

      • Valuation of plan is flawed there, though it's still a great plan even if you drop the valuation of a new phone at maybe 10% off.

  • It seems like a great phone. Just the price tag!

  • +2

and it comes with optus sport too

  • will they offer the Mate 20X ? Only reason i will upgrade every year is for bigger screen. Otherwise seems pretty ordinary compared to my Note8

    • looks unlikely as Optus has only put the Mate 9, Mate 10 Pro on their list in the last two years…

Would prefer the Mate 20X too as it doesn't have the notch

      • you're probably right. that big screen probably wont appeal to everyone hence Optus wont bring them in and risk not selling it

      • I am after the Mate 20X but don't like any price over $1,000 for a phone.

    • I have asked both Optus and Vodafone and they both said no to the Mate 20 X.

  • +1

Hmm this or the Pixel 3?

    • +1

      Depends on your priorities:

      Pixel Pros:
      -Best camera.
      -Fast updates and stock Android.

      Mate20 Pros:
-Better looking notch (in my opinion)
-Facial recognition and in-screen finger print scanner.
      -Better battery (4200 mAh)
      -Faster processor and more RAM.

So it's basically Pixel if you are a stock Android and camera guy, Mate20 for everything else.

      • +13

        You sure?
I think Mate 20 Pro has better camera/cameras.

        • +1

It's probably too early to say really, reviewers will have their say soon enough I'm sure.
The Mate 20 certainly is a more impressive camera/cameras on paper, but Google is king of photos because of their software backing the camera up.

          • +7

@solidsnek: considering the quality is so close that people are arguing which is better, I would suggest not basing a purchase on the camera alone. They're both obviously very close and of such good quality that it may only really be noticeable when doing pixel peeping comparisons. 99% of photos stay on your phone or maybe viewed on a computer so the differences are almost non existent.

I would be looking at user experience and what you would be using your phone for most of the time

        • +1

The mate has the better camera hardware. It's how they process their pictures that make them worse.

      • +1

mate20 pro is the best camera i've seen on mobile in person, though i havnt seen the pixel 3 yet

        • +3

you are probably referring to P20pro as the Mate 20 pro has yet to be released.

      • +3

Camera is a push at best, mate20pro might even have small edge. Optical zoom over fancy software zoom ANYDAY, regardless how fancy said software zoom is. Throw in that 0.6x ultra wide angle.

Take Pixel 3 only if you need stock android.

Edit: 2.5cm focus macro also. Check the reviews it's insane you can see pixels if u take photo at a screen.

      • +1

Based on Pixel 2 and P20 pro camera, P20 pro wins on every aspect except when taking bokeh image.

    • +2

This! Huawei Mate20 Pro has all the new features you will find in Android flagship phones in the next year.

        And free Chinese surveillance… :/

        • +8

          It's a shame the pre-order bonus isn't a tinfoil hat really..

          • -2

            @solidsnek: None needed dalcloud… It's a completely reasonable concern.

            • +1

@Binchicken22: That looked at a phone for the Chinese market, look at the comments people calling him an idiot.

              • @whytd: Maybe so, however the fact that they as a company are willing to do it one market doesn't lead to overwhelming consumer confidence in their brand as a whole.

                • -1

@Binchicken22: Cognitive dissonance leads fanbois to find whatever reason they need to trust Huawei. For mine, they're not nearly cheap enough for a company which is at the beckon call of the CCP, and, unlike companies like Apple, would gladly build back doors into the devices.

                  • +9

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: Backdoors with Chinese Government are bad. Backdoors with US Government are good.

                    • @tightasian: Apple haven't even made a backdoor for the US Govt…

                    • @tightasian: I'm not saying either would be a good thing, however to be fair, one of those has implemented a real time citizen monitoring system that gives citizens scores based on all their activities including any negative remarks they may make about the government that then restricts their freedoms if their score gets too low… And the other hasn't.

                      • @Binchicken22: To say nothing of the effect on your score if you are merely related or associated to somebody who's made anti-government remarks.

                    • @tightasian: You don't need a backdoor when our government provides access through the front door.

I am curious to know people's thoughts about PRISM

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRISM_(surveillance_program)

  • Wonder if it's eligible for the Huawei Freebuds and Wireless charger as per the JB pre-order (assume it would be):

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/phones/Outright-Mobile-Handsets/hu…

    • +1

Online executive agreed that it will include both wireless earbuds and charger promotion as well. Please check again before considering this. If included , it will be a good deal I guess.

  • I read in WP that Optus one only offers single sim rather then dual one like JB. :(

    • +2

mind to justify your bold claims?

    • +2

The software might not be everyone's cup of tea but the hardware is top notch and good value.

    • +1

Looking at resale value for the P20 Pro for example, I found Huawei's prices are pretty consistent with other Android phones in terms of depreciation.

  • Makes me wanna sell my iPhone x. too hard to leave Apple's ecosystem (iMessage, facetime n stuff). but great features

    • +9

You won't look back, once you do leave, and your wallet will be heavier. :-)

      • I tried once with Galaxy S7 few years back, hated the change.

        • Don't know why you got negged for that. You're probably better qualified than most to compare them if you've actually tried both systems. Android is hard to compare because there are so many different implementations.

  • -4

Would the $65 plan be better, total cost $1,560 over 24 months.

    https://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/phones/huawei/mate10-pr…

    • +1

That's the old model (Mate10 Pro).

  • +2

If you're a true Ozbargainer and after a phone besides Apple or Samsung, its best to wait a couple of months after its release. The chances are its price will drop significantly. Just look at Huawei P20 pro latest offer from Telstra, for $65p/m you got 80gb data with Telstra.

  • Amazing hardware but not a huge fan of the EMUI android skin.
Just wish they used stock android or some light mods like OnePlus does.

    • +2

I have the Mate 9 and have been happy just using Nova Launcher. Nova is a killer launcher and you can skin EMUI to look pretty much like stock Android. Those two things get you most of the way there.

  • -6

The 50GB data is actually 25Gb+25GB bonus data and double data offer ends 13/01/19. That's like just a month away. I wonder why no one noticed this.

    • +10

That's when the bonus offer ends, but the bonus 25gb will go for the life of the contract.

    • I guess just the double data offer ends on that date. The 50GB data (25GB actual + 25 GB bonus data) includes with your plan until you change or cancel it.

    • Not sure whether it means if you sign up before 13/1/19, you get bonus data while if you sign up after, you get normal data.

    • +4

I'm also not sure how 13Jan2019 is 1 month away.

  • Woah crazy deal if you can "be a student". Phone is totally worthy based on early reviews.

    • becoming a student is pretty easy, you just need a .edu email

      • Where do you get one of these ?

  • +1

HUAWEI website Pre-order Bonus: claim Freebuds and Wireless charger RRP$348, 17th-31st Oct

I think we should get the bonus if order from Optus

    https://consumer.huawei.com/au/

Sorry mate, just noticed you already mentioned that.

    • +1

I just signed up via the chat, and they told me it is included via the redemption.

      • +1

No one in Optus seems to be aware of the pre order bonus where as Vodafone are advertising it.

  • +1

I got a feeling this is single sim verson, Optus seem to always cut out the dual sim features

    not worth signing up for.

  • Why is this 18pm? Is that per week? I'm so confused

    • when you minus the cost of the phone outright of $1599

      • +1

False economics…..nobody will pay $1599 for this phone

        • Different phone, but I agree its false economics unless you the one ozbargainer who would pay RRP for it.

          • @Peel: Oops, wrong phone, but I still reckon nobody pays RRP for phones, too much competition out there.

  • +1

Having just read all of the hands on reviews of this phone (some have had the phone for a week) it looks like it will be crowned the best phone of the year. I like the textured glass as it could mean I don't even need a case (I usually get one for grip rather than protection).

    • one unboxing showed it comes with a case

      • I would hope so with a $1599 phone.

        • +2

          apple don't….

          • @BMX221: Apple don't even include a fast charger. Apple are special.

    • +2

The EMUI bloat is the only thing stopping me at this stage.

  • "Ends up being $18pm for the plan (and $9.8pm for Students) "

Pardon my math. Can anyone please enlighten me?

    • They are thinking that they will sell this phone at RRP. Impossible.

      • +1

Don't think anyone is really thinking of trying to sell the phone for RRP. Moreso thinking if they were to pay RRP outright vs getting it through this deal.

@xiangtan If you were to go out and pay RRP for this phone you'd spend $1599, then you'd still need a plan.

Or get this and pay $85 x 24 = $2,040 for the phone and a plan.

        $2,040 - $1,599 = $441

        $441 / 24 = $18.38p/m.

        For students:

        $76.50pm x 24 = $1,836

        $1,836 - $1,599 = $237

        $237 / 24 = $9.88p/m.

        • -5

Stop it. You will not sell it at 1599!!!

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Did you even read the above comment?

            • @whytd: Oh I see the way u r thinking. I was looking at it from the buy plan side not buy phone side.

          • @[Deactivated]: I already bought it at $1599 from JB :p

        • What if your getting a free plan already? than is it better to buy it outright?

  • +1

The 20gb (10+10) for $85/mth is a better plan if you don't need all the data as $20/mth goes into paying off the handset should U need to get out of the contract early

    • +1

Don't think that's how it works. From experience Optus will charge you whatever month is left x device fee per month?

If you go to check out on the 20gb plan, you get:

$66 PER MONTH DEVICE CHARGE MONTHLY $66
      DEVICE CREDIT MONTHLY - $46

Leaving you with the $20 handset fee per month. This reduces to $0 on the 50gb plan.

So when you leave with 12 months left for example, Optus will charge you $66 x 12 = $792 regardless of which plan you are on. Happy to be corrected.

      • Yeap you are right, probably the same if break early. However
If let's say you want to stay on after 2 years with the handset fully paid, then the 20gb plan for $65/mth would save you $20.

  • Damn this looks to be an impressive phone!!

Will wait for more reviews to come out before committing though.

  • don't forget you can also ask for extra 10% off (on top of the student discount) from selected Optus sales channel, retail and online won't be able to offer, similar to the harvey norman offer previously, being exclusive to "some" Optus partners.

    • What channels?

      • Im confused too

    • Could you go into more detail popcorn? :D

  • Anyone who got Optus Mate 10 Pro last year, was able to flash to dual sim version?

    • i did that

      • @333333wade do you know where I can find information on how to do that? Interested in taking this plan and would be awesome to just carry 1 phone instead of 2 for work/personal numbers.

    • +1

They are premium, what are you on about?
