Best Area in Sydney to Stay for Great Night Life?

Yes I know. Sydney and great night life don't go hand in hand anymore. Anyway we are heading up to Sydney next year and planning to get an airbnb. We are easy on the location as long as it's fairly central and has good bars etc near by.

Can anyone recommend some good locations to consider please?

Thanks in advance!

I thought with the lock out laws it might be really crappy?

    Kings cross?

    • I talked to some bouncers there a few weeks back at a nightclub, they comfirmed… yes there is less crime and junkies round the streets pushing drugs etc, however the lockout laws means very few people go there nowdays . Its pretty dead/tame.
If you go outside the lockout zone, there may be some more decents spots . I was stuck at central a few months back (missed last train) apparently it is just a walk away, then you are out of the lockout law zone, and clubs can by law open all night and allow you to go in and out.
Remember if in lockout zone, you also cannot go between clubs, visiting a few spots etc; after midnight I think it is ? Someone else can comfirm, but after a certain time, even if say a club is open till 3am, you must be in before the lockout time, and then you are stuck in that club. Of course you can leave, but then not allowed back in and anyone around won't let you in either after that time.
If you want to go to Sydney area but not set on just the CBD etc, then maybe ask for suggestions of clubs and nightlife near Sydney somewhat. I'm not sure, but I think even places a bit away like Hurstville might have better nightlife on weekends, than anywhere in CBD. Hurstville is like 20 minutes away from Sydney.

      • Hurstville has zero night life of any kind apart from a couple of pokie dens

        • I've seen heap of 'party-people' get on train from there. Maybe they came from a club near hurstville, idk.

Respectfully disagree. Had some late work at Kogarah, and Hurstville was the nearest only place to get decent Asian meals after midnight.

Darlinghurst and Kings Cross are still pretty good for most things and accessible to other stuff, but it all depends on your idea of a good night out

Some want 24x7 pumping clubs, others strippers, others want food, specialised venues, movies, theatre, etc.

Others have kids or pets so want a location with services friendly to those

Newtown seems to be the go now with lock out laws in the former hot spots.

Some good bars there though. Worth a consideration.

Best area for great night life? Definitely not the city IMO. One exception though, Sweenys rooftop is fantastic at the weekend on a hot summers day. Bit of a hidden gem.
Yes, the city has some bars but it's fairly dead & sterile environment at the weekend, except Darling Harbour, which is a tourist magnet.

I would definitely recommend Darlinghurst. Easily accessible transport wise, walking distance to all the city but most imporantly it has the best nightlife, along with Surry Hills. A plethora of bars & restaurants to float your boat.
Kings Cross/Potts Point again is accesible from here & plenty of decent establishments too.

    • Thank you. Just the kind of comments I was after!

    • Darling Harbour does seem a tourist hotspot and plenty of nice bars and clubs round there. 'Home Nightclub' used to be good, it might have a different name now, but is still there.
Also similarly to around Opera house, seems quite lively and nice, some acoustic music played while sitting like right on the harbour would be nice, depends what you're into of course.
Note: I have just passed by these places, walked past, when I have been in city on a day out that ended up a bit later than I expected.
I'm pretty sure Darling Harbour and around Opera House you would pay a premium on your drinks for the location, but if just in Sydney for a 1 off, it would be worth it I guess.
Check lockout laws on Darling Harbour and Opera House precinct though. Some don't want to be out past midnight. I used to only go to the city to be out all night, till 5am at least, then could move onto another club for the 'after party' scene, then finish up around 11am next day :)

Great Night Life or Sydney. Choose one

    Pumping nightclub/strippers - Kings Cross
    Hipster bars - Newtown
Classier bars/music - Barangaroo (CBD) and/or Martin Place to some extent
Good restaurants and Bars - Surry Hills

Bottom line - if you stay near the CBD you should be fine.

    • Thanks. Will do that then.

      • Check out Zephyr - great rooftop bar but drinks are a bit expy

  • What is a good bar to you?

If you like pubs, there is no point sending you to a whiskey bar or vice versa.

What kind of decor do you like? Do you like old school? or like modern?

Do you want to dress up before going to a 'bar' or you're happy to go casual. Again, this could affect the price point as well.

There are many choices in Sydney that caters for any type of bar you want.

No kids, no pets. 24/7 clubs(?), chilled/lay'd back casual bars, not whiskey, craft beer specific or high class etc.
