NVidia Shield TV vs. Extra Gaming PC

Hey Friends,

I'm looking to play some games on the lounge room TV (just more casual stuff) and wondering what the best way to do it is.

My gaming PC currently has a GTX 1070 Ti, which is more than powerful enough for all the games I want to play. Would the Nvidia Shield TV be a good option to play games on my TV? I have Ethernet cables routed, so I won't have to worry about WiFi. What's the quality like compared to playing local?

Another option is to upgrade my HTPC. It's currently my old rig (i7 2600) with no GPU and is there to just play media and browse the web, but for the price of an Nvidia shield, I can get an old GTX 1060 or RX 580 on Gumtree/eBay.

Anyone with some experience able to help me choose the better option?

Thanks!

  • Nvidia Shield is probably the best option although Steamlink is a lot cheaper (but doesn't do media decoding and other stuff Shield does).

BTW, I'm pretty sure you can already do game streaming through Steam Big Picture mode (or alternate method) with your HTPC.

    • I have a steam link using gigabit Ethernet and it's just a little too laggy for my liking. It was only $25 so can't complain too much.

    • I've got a steam link too. I find it annoying… if you're using it, you take control of the PC, so can't use both at the same time.

  • Just to be the voice of dissent, I have a steam link and also on Gigabit Ethernet. I've completed a few games from my couch with nary a hitch. Granted, the quality is lower as compared to my actual rig but definitely playable and enjoyable.
