Avoid or Reduce The 10% Online Overseas Purchase Tax?

Have you cheap folks got ways to get around the 10%?

It's frustrating I used to buy a lot more stuff from overseas mostly China but everywhere it tags on 10% on top! Even obscure online stores.

befriend someone that is registered for gst.

    • Didn't know you were exempt if you're registered for GST. Cheers.

      • Well, you aren't exempted, but you can offset gst spent against gst collected.

        • A couple of our USA suppliers that have been requested to collect GST do not charge if you supply them with your ABN

Has anyone tried, setting account to USA, using VPN through US to site, making an order, but setting the delivery address different to residential and setting the delivery to Australia?

Doesn’t seem fair to charge US customers GST, now does it? :D

  • You just know that GST is making it to the ATO right…it's a joke

  • Travel there in person, come back with an amount under the exemption. Also, post to yourself (i.e. you're in China, post to your address in Australia). It's the seller who has to collect GST. You're not a seller, therefore…but still make sure it's under $1k including shipping, just to be on the safe side.

Assuming this is all for personal use, anything you buy brand-new you can immediately open and discard packaging, reducing the value.

Personally, I have items shipped to family in the US. No GST since it's sent to a domestic address there. Shipping to here is crazy expensive, but it still works out cheaper. I also double/triple check prices, if the price is fairly close here, I'll just buy here. But getting an Nvidia Shield controller brand new for $27 and a PS3 Eye webcam for $3 is a no-brainer.

  • A bunch of Chinese eBay sellers have somehow figured a workaround. I used to absolutely hate this practice upto the point of leaveing negative feedback but now I'm more than happy to purchase small value items from them.

Here is the hint: If the price is relatively cheap and pretty much in comparison with the same item shipped from HK and SZ, but the item location is stated as Darwin, NSW, Chullora, etc. then they are guaranteed to be shipped from overseas circumventing the GST added by eBay. For most of these sellers the last mile carrier is Auspost so the government owned Auspost may be knowingly or unknowingly supporting GST fraud in this case.
