Charities and Campaign Organisations Door Knocking/Soliciting

I had Amnesty International knock at my door yesterday.

What got my attention initially was the guy wrestling with my security screen. I answered the door with the security screen closed and told him thanks but no thanks, I was direct and to the point. Coincidentally a parcel that was delivered around the same time has gone missing.
I might be very unfair to suspect him of taking the parcel (have reported to Aus Post and sender and phoned Amnesty), but it’s not outside the realms of possibility.

I just question how effective door knocking is to gain support for a charity? Do you give your time/money to charities that engage in this type of soliciting behaviour?

They're called chuggers (charity muggers), the sooner they go away for good the better IMO.

I do not give anything to such charities that knock on my door. They are all on a commission basis and the actual charity gets sfa of a contribution.

    • True, and you can tell when they are extremely pushy, they don't gaf about the charity just their commission.
1 of them even kept hassling my mate in wheelchair, even after he said no about 3 times, saying like 'oh the poor children bla bla' . If he really cared he would be helping them out of kindness, rather than scabbing off charity, taking high percentage of any money you donate.

  • I mean, if they did that to me I wouldn't be home. So uh, zero effectiveness.

I've worked (for a single day) for door-to-door charity agents, I personally wouldn't donate since there a significant percentage of what you donate actually goes towards commissions and other wages.

Wages were terrible too. Apart from the 35% commission, Who wants to work for $450 per week (for 9 hours a day), with unpaid travel expenses and no vehicle :)

Hate anyone that knocks on my door without an invite!

You issue invites to people to knock on your door?

  • Had one recently collecting for UN would not accept cash - was only interested in an ongoing monthly credit card subscription!
Told him there was no way someone knocking on my door was ever going to get my credit card details.

  • Just pretend I'm not home, seems to be quite effective so far!

Having the taxidermy shed and a few bullet holes in the rusted out truck along the driveway tend to keep all but the hungriest of chuggers away.

  • Originally volunteers collected for Salvos, Cancer council etc at your door but with safety concerns and rise of fraudulent collectors, think they are all gone.

Just commission (profanity) now that make collection company rich but charity gets stuff all.

Donors aren’t being told that if they sign up for a 12-month donation, up to 93 per cent of that donation goes to Appco.
