Bond/MLPPP Two Wan Connections (ADSL and 4G) with Pfsense

Hi, has anyone done a Wan bonding/trunking (not a load balancing) using PfSense on ADSL2+ and 4G USB modem?

The idea is to bond/aggregate/combine 2x internet connections into a single higher speed?

Based on the articles I have read so far (including the one from PfSense), this is possible, but some said I need to ask the ISP whether they supports it or not?

Wow, would not have expected to see a question like this on here…

Perhaps better suited for r/pfsense or r/homelab?

It's a good question regardless. I assume you have consumer ADSL and not a business line?

    • Yea, I like ozb too much…to the point forgot about other sites :P

      Yes, for residential

  • ISP has nothing to do with this. You have to understand that if you use 2 wan connections, your router is responsible for managing the packets. In this case pfsense. When you are downloading a file and use a download manager that can do multi threading, your download manager will request multiple parts of file in different connections to the server. It is pfsense responsibility to pass those connection packets to different WAN's (adsl, 4g) and manage subsequent packets accordingly. Similarly, when browsing, your Web browser will be making multiple connections which may be passed through different WANs if pfsense is configured according. For ISP, this is transparent.

    • @jsb, televisi is talking about bonding, not the multi-wan or load balancing/ failover we normally setup on a router.

  • I am currently using pfSense with 3 Internet lines to achieve higher speed for downloads.
Unlimited Line 1: CRAP Telstra congested ADSL line with only 1.5Mbps peak-time (like now). It is connected through an old netgear DSL model with SNR tweak firmware.
Unlimited Line 2: VividWireless 12Mbps line. Wifi got turned of from Huawei Modem and a DMZ was setup. I am planning to terminate the service once my free credit runs out.
200GB Optus on a Netgear 4G+ router: it is up and running via in-built ethernet port with DMZ setup.

All up and running with total speed around 60-70Mbps. NBN may be available July next year in my area.
I've set up a bunch of firewall rules to redirect some of free data services from Optus, like Spotify or Google music to my Sonos speaker.

Again those multi-wan setup is not a real aggregation/bonding and it is NOT possible to achieve the business-grade bonding without the involvement of ISP.
A load balancing is more practical in this case.

You need an equipment from your ISP. AFAIK TPG can do this for business customers as I managed to get a quote couple of years back with 5 bounded DSL link.

    • Appreciate your response!

Can you please tell me more about this? With PfSense load balancing (through round robin), how can it increase the bandwidth, consider traffic comes from LAN will be alternating either through WAN1, 2 and 3?

I've setup one myself (WAN1: internode ADSL 2+, WAN2: 4g Telstra USB modem), but the speedtest result seems inclining towards a single WAN connection only.

And yes, I've used weight setting for WAN2/Telstra USB modem: 2 (as it's faster than ADSL one)
