What's The Best Bang-for-The-Buck Accommodation in Sydney during off-Peak Season?

Hi Folks,

I'm a student living in Melbourne on a shoestring budget and would like to visit Sydney for the first time!

I would like to ask you guys for some suggestions about the best way to stay for 4-5 days on a budget. 4-5 days should be enough time to explore the main tourist attraction that Sydney has to offer right? Suggestions on where to visit while in Sydney is also welcome!

I am aware of places like Airbnb for cheap accommodation but it's a hit or miss sometimes so I'd rather not resort to that. Youth hostels are also out of the question as well as I have had some bad experiences with them in the past. Please note, I'm not looking for the cheapest places to stay, but rather, the best value for dollar hotel or short term accommodation.

So what is the best value for money hotel that is available and close to the Sydney CBD and not too hard to get to from the airport? Please leave links and recommendations to bargains down below thanks!

Not a hypocrite! Just wanting to find the best bang-for-buck value for accommodation not necessarily the cheapest or crappiest places. If budget is not important I wouldn't be making a post here asking for suggestions!

It’s your life but if you’re on a ‘shoestring student budget’ then maybe spending your limited money on unnecessary things like a trip to Sydney isn’t the right thing to do right now. Maybe in the future once graduated, get a job and have disposable income to spend, like everyone else.

Otherwise, booking.com for hotels and find your suitable one if you don’t want hostels or Airbnb. We’re not gonna magic something up that’s cheap but not cheapest but value for money but shoestring budget but no defined budget. What.

  • Probably should mention whether you need your student wife with you or not …

    • Nope. Just going with another Uni friend to explore Sydney for the first time!

  • You need to tell us what your budget is.

Drive to Sydney and sleep in your car.

No, seriously though, your question is impossible to answer because everyone's definition of value is different. The common sense thing to do would be to check the regular sites and find some place that fits your budget. I don't think anybody here would have any ground-breaking suggestions.

I've stayed here a few times.
Nothing special but fairly cheap. Located in Thai town and a short walk from Central station so easy to get train from airport. Good pub directly opposite with good Thai food.
    Even has a pool.

  • I've stayed a couple of times at Dixon Residences in Chinatown - nothing flash from the outside but very clean and comfortable, a great location and usually a good price. I book using hotels.com.

  • Best Bang-for-The-Buck ? Find a new gf or bf from Syd? :)

Never tried these but this is probably within your budget. Read up on it on tripadvisor and see if its to your liking. From Tripadvisor, it sounds like the tip is to get a top bunk bed and book a capsule in side entrance not front entrance. Good luck.

  • Any of the Meriton suites. In terms of Square Metre per dollar. They are best value.

this looks like something you're looking for: https://bit.ly/2CxVHah

  • Go airbnb, but since you're concerned of "hit and miss" nature of airbnb, go for the airbnb hosts with superhost on their listing. It means they have rented out their property alot and have all 5 star reviews usually, so have great service and place is as described.
Look at photos and read through listing thoroughly. The superhost users will almost certainly have all details and photos, listed accurately. If you want to know more, ask them in message.
Not only can you get better value in the actual property itself, but also better value and "bang for your buck" in way of service :)

  • Get yourself a GF/BF in Sydney so you can stay with them, that way you would get plenty of BANG for no buck!

  • There’s still some pubs in Sydney that have rooms,Wynyard,Kirk on Harris (best location 100 mtr to darling harbour,my fav). Also Woolbrokers 2-3 star budget hotel close to darling harbour.

  • There are a few backpacker places near Central Railway. Google it. They look ok from the outside, and respectable looking youngish travellers staying there. Also good for public transport with the railway, and buses handy.
